This is why many stores are going to a restocking fee for items returned. i know my Target when I bought my digital camera said there would be a 10% restocking fee to return it if I didn't return it for another camera or if it wasn't broken upon purchase. Best Buy had the same sort of thing when I bought a video camera there. They just didn't want people using them on vacation and bringing them back. It hurts you if you see same camera at another store cheaper or just a better camera at another store. I do think it is fair to charge the restocking fee though.

I think that if they are buying big ticket items with the full knowledge that they are going to use and return the product that constitutes intent to commit fraud and could possibly be illegal should a store have enough evidence to prove a trend in their returns. I know that I have had to take legal action against a customer that did this in the past. They may not be able to be prosecuted but they can be banned from ever purchasing and returning in that store again. (as well they should.) I would give them an earful of what I think of their practice. They don't want to buy a big ticket item for a one time use.. that is what they make rental places for.

Women who do clothing this way tick me off, too!

We were at a Grizzlies game a couple of weeks ago, and sat right in front of one of the club boxes that they rent out for special events. This girl came into the luxury box and had an AMAZING coat on. I was in awe of this jacket and so envious. Fabulous clothes, box seats, and here I sit in a regular seat wearing Banana Republic.

Anyway, she sat down, took the jacket off and left it lying open on her chair, and went to get a drink. ALL THE TAGS WERE STILL ON, INSIDE THE COAT!!! When she came back and saw them, instead of ripping them off and putting them in her purse, she looked around real quick, and grabbed the jacket and folded it over to hide the tags. I have no doubt in my mind that this woman had bought a $500 coat and was going to return it the next day. If you're going to do that, at least invest in a re-tagger and don't advertise the fact!

I think it's dishonest, but if I were you I'd relax and not worry so much about what they're doing.

As far as making it a crime, it would be very hard to prove intent. Not worth adding more layers of red tape to an America that is already too complicated.

While it may not be the greatest thing going, I'd be willing to be quiet about it and move on. It can't be but so important to you.

You can count me as someone who has not and would not do something like that. It's fraudulant, plain and simple. Stores are there to SELL product, not RENT them to you.

People that do things like this are the reason that stores are having to go to such strict return policies and re-stocking fees. I worked retail for several years and many people legitimately needed to return something, but didn't have the receipt...so they were stuck with their broken products.

I think this basically amounts to stealing in the end...either from the retailer, other customers, or the manufacturer. When people would return things to my retailer, the package often had to be taped-up and repackaged. No one usually wanted to buy the "used" product, so it just sat there until the store eventually had to claim it as a loss or send it back to the manufacturer. I don't think it is fair that another customer would be purchasing a USED television set for the same price as a new one. Taking something back for legitimate reasons is one thing, but buying something, using it, and returning it (with the intention to return it) is just wrong...

There was an episode of King of Queens once where Carrie became addicted to buying expensive clothes to fit in with her office (Versace suits and whatnot) when she learned that she could wear them with the tags tucked in and then return them within a certain time limit. She acquired a HUGE collection and became completely overwhelmed trying to keep track of what needed to be returned when, and was thousands of dollars in debt.

But the point it hammered home about this kind of behavior for me was that, what if you (general you) buy something, like an expensive camcorder to take on a vacation, with every intent to return it as soon as you're home in a week, and you get it wet on Splash Mountain? And it stops working? Or you just plain DROP it? Something NOT covered under manufacturer's warranty. Sheer stupidity on your part. How dare you try to return it when you ruined it, you know?

Or you buy that $500 coat and wear it to the ball game and you clumsily drop a mustard-ed hot dog followed by a soda all over it. Was it REALLY worth it? You can't return it when YOU ruin it!

I work for a distributor and we charge a 15% restock fee for our returned products. I hate it. I feel awful charging people who legitimately just want to return the product. But we've gotten burned by too many bad apples...
