Do you consider snapping your fingers at someone rude

Wow, interesting thread. :p

I'm having a hard time believing the OP is actually 39 and not 10.

But to answer the question, it kind of depends on the circumstances. I can see if someone is on the phone and the kids are making noise you might snap your fingers at them to make them be quiet. But as a former waitress I did occasionally have a finger-snapping customer and I do feel it's rude in that situation. I would never snap my fingers to try to get my server's attention, and I didn't like having it done to me. When they snapped their fingers at me it never got the results they wanted. A simple "excuse me" is much more polite and works much better in the long run.

The OP would be 51 these days.

I think perhaps the only time it wouldn't be rude is if maybe I was a flamenco dancer and my partner was snapping at me to dance? :teeth:

Ghost thread????

Anyhow, yes I would consider it rude... Under almost any circumstance.
As the above posts said, it is a person, a human being, not a dog.
An, "excuse me Miss, or Sir..." would be appropriate.
Never snapping the fingers, whistling, etc.

Even kids...
If I were talking to another adult, and the kids were an annoyance, I would say, "Excuse me just a second, then speak to the kids directly... about how they needed to keep it down, or go elsewhere, and how their noise was not appropriate or respectful..."

I never do it. I consider it rude.

If I'm being interrupted on the phone, I stop talking and ask my son to wait until I'm finished unless it is life or death.

I can understand why you do it while on the phone, but I don't care for it.

I work at home often, and sometimes I will have a conference call sometime between 3:15-4:30pm when my kids are already home from school. I give them fair warning and they know the drill...they need to be silent, they cannot interrupt me, if the house is not burning down or someone is not bleeding profusely, I'd better not be interrupted for ANYTHING (they are 15, 11, and 10). But occassionally a nitpicking fight will break out, and you better believe my fingers are snapping! I usually mute when I am not speaking to cut out background noise, but if my kids start fighting while I am talking, they will be snapped at.

Now, if I am talking to DH, or my sister, or someone else casually, I will ask the caller to please hold on for a moment, then I mute the phone, scream at my kids, then return back to the caller in the nice sweet voice I started with LOL (just kidding about the scream part:p)

It isn't necessarily rude but let's face it. Most of the time people doing it are being rude.

I HATE it when people snap their fingers at me. When I was a waitress, people used to do that and "Hey, GIRL..."

Ugh.

Not related to your situation. But advice to young men out there. If the woman you're dating says "Hey Girl." as a matter of course......RUN!!!! And don't look back.

As a CM, when guests snap their fingers at me it immediately puts me on edge and I'm less likely to have a good interaction. In my mind, snapping your fingers at someone kind of gives of the impression that you believe them to be at your beck & call, instead of someone who has a wide variety of duties and many others to help out.

Like someone said, if they need my attention and can't talk to me I don't mind but I hate when people snap fingers at servers. Another thing I hate is when people whistle for someone (unless it's across a football field and they're trying to get their attention!) We have some people who come into the store and have a "special whistle" for whoever they're with to find them. I feel like asking "have you lost your dog?"

It said I had replied to this thread and I didn't remember, but since I replied in 2003, that could be the reason. What a thread to pick a fight over. Lots of things have happened in 12 years. My DD was 7 and now she is 19!

What happened to our zombie thread bumper?? I would snap my fingers to get his or her attention but that would be rude!!! :rotfl:
