Do you clean your room?

Was wondering if anyone here cleans their room when they enter and if so with what?

Last year DD got sick while at the world and with all this swine flu craziness I want to take as many precautions as possible....I NEED a nice vacation and if taking 30 minutes to an hour to clean my room ensures that...I am all for it.

I was also thinking of bringing pillows (I think my Kmart has them super cheap) and maybe leaving them there/throwing them away?

WWYD?

Also...I know this type of thread is asking to be flamed....so if you feel a need to do so, please keep it to yourself..thanks ;)

I'm bringing Lysol wipes to clean the surfaces, but that's all I'm doing.

i am thinking of taking an antibacterial spray and maybe some lysol wipes for phone, doorknobs, remote controls, toilet handle, and other normally "germy" places we all touch.

I'm not going to go crazy, but just be careful. It can't hurt and it only takes a few minutes.

as for pillows... I don't understand why you would take them, but if it makes you feel better, then why not?:confused3

I can understand the pillows in a way - I mean, they don't clean them, so if the last person was ill, there are probably germs in the pillows too. Having said that, I don't take my own pillows with me because I don't sleep with my face in the pillow.

The only things I wipe down when I check in are the TV remote, the telephone, and handles (door, drawer, etc) because those are things housekeeping typically doesn't wipe down, at least not enough for me. I don't go crazy with it - because I wash thoroughly before eating anything, even a snack in the room. Sometimes we can make illnesses harder to fight by trying to be too clean. Personally, I'd be more worried about catching the Norwalk virus on vacation than the swine flu - it's more prevalent and in my opinion, makes you more miserable.

I usually clean the room when I arrive but that is because I have a weakened immune system from chemo medicine. Before I was on the medicine I did not. I bring a Lysol aersol for spraying and surface wipes for everything else. I request a bed sheet change (just for piece of mind) after I have sprayed it down with lysol and I will ship cheap, throw away pillows in advance of me (and bring my home pillow cases). Again, I didn't take these precautions until the chemo but I think this is the best you can do and hope for nothing. These are not overbearing and I think with the flu outbreak these a prudent steps you can take to protect yourself. Make sure you get the remote, door handles, everything people touch. I do tip my housekeeper kindly for tolerating my germ issues. Please don't forget them when we are doing cooky things. Who cares what people think, take care of your family. :magnify:

If it makes you feel better than clean the room :goodvibes I normally wipe over the TV remote control/telephone and handles too - but TBH once you're outside the room you can't go cleaning everything everywhere, so good hand hygiene is the real key here.

I always take Clorox or Lysol wipes when we travel. When at Disney, I usually only wipe down the bathtub, toilet, and sink area.

However, when we go to other locations, I wipe down all hard surfaces and I also take Lysol spray and spray the beds. The kids have their own blankets and pillows they use.

Hello, I'm a germaphobe and I probably need a 12 step program.

You truly stand a better chance of picking up nasty germs while in the parks vs in your room. Just imagine how many germy hands/fingers have run along those railings inside the attractions, or touched stuff in the public restrooms. That's where I'm much more careful...lots of hand washing while in the parks.
My resort room?? Nope, don't do much when I first get there...maybe wipe down the TV remote with a Chlorox wipe, and perhaps the door handles and the phone, but that's about it.

Why would anyone flame you for wanting your room to be clean and comfortable?? :confused3

Anyhow, I wouldn't spend more than a few minutes wiping things. I don't worry too much about touching germ-laden items, I focus more on keeping my hands away from my face. But if you want to spend up to an hour cleaning, fine with me! :thumbsup2 I'd be concerned more about how to entertain my kids while I'm cleaning for that length of time. Hopefully, you can do something like send them to go check out the pool, or go buy refillable mugs while you clean.

I have never been unhappy with hotel pillows, so I don't bring my own.

The only thing I have done or will ever do...I lysol wipe the hard surfaces and the bathroom. That is it.

I bring with a small bottle of Clorox Anywhere. It kills germs and is safe for kids. I always spray hard surfaces in the room first, when we have gone in the past, DS was only two and still was sometimes putting fingers in his mouth, etc... I do the phone, doorknobs, doors, remote, tables, around the toilet, and sink. It's quick and easy, I also take a Clorox/Lysol wipe to wipe down the seat on the plane, I would think that would have the most germs because the space is so confined, I don't over do it, it literally takes about 2 minutes in the room and 20 seconds on the plane!

I usually do not clean the room, but I think this trip will be different. I'm going to get the lysol wipes and wipe down all the surfaces in the bathroom when we get there. I just want to enjoy our trip so I'm going to be a little extra careful.

Have to agree with the OP about being more likely to catch something in the parks. The turnstiles, handles at rides, etc. You touch all that all day long and can easily forget just once and accidentally touch your nose, mouth, etc. I aways have hand sanitizer with me but being in an environment like that it can be easy to forget once. So, for me, the room is my least worry.

That being said.. better safe than sorry and do whatever makes you feel the most comfortable on your trip! :)

We travel a lot but I've gotten into the habit of wiping down the hotel rooms with clorox wipes. Just a once over though, I don't go nuts. Target sells travel packs that come in handy.

I really wouldn't consider buying pillows and throwing them out. They are covered in clean pillowcases. I also wouldn't even think of bringing my own linens (way too much to pack).

I:love:this sanitizing hint:

One of the dirtiest items in a hotel room are the remotes:scared:. I read on here recently of someone who immediately puts the hotel remote in a ziplock baggie and keeps it in there the whole stay:happytv:.

Wonder what else I could fit in the XL baggies?:lmao:

I agree that your chances are so much better getting germs on your hands outside of your room. We never have cleaned our room when we first get in; WDW or any other hotel room. If you feel better doing it then a quick wipe with the towlettes isn't a bad idea I guess. From what I hear; wash your hands often and carry the gels around and use this often if you can not get to soap and water.

If everbody would follow the wash your hands often rule, especially before coming out of the bathroom (I've seen many go from stall to the outside world without looking at the sink let alone actually washing their hands it's :scared1::scared1: And cough or sneeze into your arm and not your hand everyone would be safer.

Due to an autoimmune issue we've always taken Lysol (now wipes) and wipe everything anyone would/could have touched. We wipe the remote, then put it in a baggie. We carry wipes with us and wipe the table and hands before eating. None of this takes more than a minute or so, so it is not time consuming.

We take along one of the small Lysol sprays and spray everything in the bathroom.

Our family has never gotten sick during or immediately after a Disney resort stay.

If anyone wants to make fun, that's fine. But our health is most important and this works for us. :)

Have fun and say well!!
p.s. Good idea about cheap pillows, but would that take up a lot of packing space for those who fly?)

A previous poster gave me an idea, maybe I could ship them? WOnder how much that would cost?

Thanks for the tips, going shopping tonight, I have a lot of clorox travel wipes (I wipe down all tables before DD eats b/c she has a peanut allergy), but I think I may pick up the clorox anywhere and some more purell. I found Sani Kids for DD.

Any other tips would be great :thumbsup2

Nope. We do nothing other than wash hands and very occasionally purell. We were there in January when this board was rampant with reports of horrible stomach flu bugs and we were fine.

We're seriously not germophibic in any way and we almost never get sick, even with my son in daycare and my husband working in a very busy ER. We're clean, but it has seriously never occured to me to bring cleaning supplies on vacation.

I didn't clean anything when I was there last year, I was just careful not to walk around barefoot on the carpet (go ahead and laugh, I don't know why I do that, it's from vacations with my family, my father was obesessive about us having something on our feet and not touching the carpet :rotfl:). I did get a little cold my first couple days there, but I'm thinking that was more from the plane than the room. This year I'm going to probably bring lysol wipes and a bottle of lysol to quickly wipe down and spray the room, but I'm not going to go crazy! ;)
