Do You Buy For The Pricipal?

My 2 cents is that I would do something special for him/her if he/she was doing something special for your child. Not that principals don't work hard for all the children, but unless you had some kind of special interaction with them, I probably wouldn't do anything...

I bought a gift basket with candy for the principal and her office staff. I volunteer there at least once a week so it's also from me, but more my son.

Principals really do not make big bucks. They discipline, deal with irate parents, stay late at Board of Ed. mtgs. & other nightly activities, deal with whiny teachers, conduct professional development, work together with social workers, and follow up on referrals, etc, etc, etc. I understand this is their job, but I honestly don't believe most principals enjoy their job. Private schools are a different story.

Coming from the wife of a high school asst. principal thank you so much finally someone who recongizes the work they put into their job. Sometimes yes they do make a bit more money than teachers but they also (at least he does) work all year around and works many late nights and extra hours going to events and meetings around the school. He also worked his tail off to get his masters and doctorate so when people whine that he makes a little more money than a teacher well it is just nice to hear someone who understands.

I think that entirely depends on where you live. Here in NY, public employee salary is public information on a gov't website, and the principals in the districts around me make over 6 figures.

But what a person makes has no bearing on whether or not I would buy them a gift.

In our district, principals start at around 135K and go upwards to close to 200K (185-190)

It is all public knowledge.

Yes you are right it all depends on the area..my husband makes no where close to six figures...more like the middle five..but farther away about a half hour yes six figures is norm..but in the end salary should have nothing to do with whether you give someone a gift or not

No, I don't. But then again, I'm a teacher at my DD's school and the principal is my boss so it just seems awkward to give a gift as a parent of a student. KWIM? I also teach 2 of his children in my class.

Not to start a debate- honestly, please no flames- but I think most of them DO make the big bucks...at least in my book it seems like big bucks.

One of my close teacher friends has been teaching for 13 years, has her Bachelors and makes more than $52k in the public elementary school. She mentioned it one day in a debate amongst other teachers, whre she argued that she disagrees with the statement "teachers don't make enough money for the job they do..."

I work in the school system and see the pay scales. A first year teacher with a Masters makes $38+ ...we are in TN. To me this is alot of $. Another friend makes over $40 and is a 5th year Bachelor level.

It is one of the most important professions and we highly prize our kids teachers. We are sure to tell them often how appreciative we are for the work they do with our kids. I find that most seem to place more value on a kind word or heartfelt card than monetary tokens.

I left a Godiva bar on my son's principal's desk last year with a thank you note. She was so thrilled with it, she called me to thank me. I think a small token or even a note is nice for these hard working folks.

We are truly indebted to the teachers because they make a difference in the lives of our most precious commodity. And no gift seems good enough, but regardless, we try.

Regarding the principal, I'm sure that he/she works very hard to provide a nurturing and safe environment for our children. But the daily interaction is so limited that I don't think a personalized gift is required

Not picking on you just using your post as it was the last one I had read.

I have had both types of principals through the years. The ones who don't really interact with the kids and the ones who do. I have to say that both my DDs have very awesome Principal/Assistant principal at their schools. My older DD has a great assistant principal so she had planned on a gift for her. Of course she has also spent a few hours sleeping on the assistant principal's couch when she has not felt well or was recovering from her concussion and trying to make it the whole day at school without calling home sick.

My youngest DD really does have a Principal that interacts daily with the kids. The Principal is one of the main reasons we stay with this school. I will never be able to thank him enough and there are other dis members who do know him and know what I am talking about. He knows EVERY child's name in that school and he truly cares about the kids. He was what made the decision very easy for my youngest and made me not as stressed about my youngest's medical issues.

The last principal at their old elementary school was not a people person and actually ignored the kids when in public outside of school. He would not even say hi to parents in the school.

We get the kids principal a little something every year, this morning my kids brought her an angel ornament and some mini gingerbread cookies, I could tell that it did mean alot to her to see that my kids had thought about her. Who cares if the principal makes good money???? it's still a nice gesture to show them that you appreciate them.

We did bags of assorted candy for the principal, custodian, lunch lady, librarian, computer resource teacher nurse and secretaries. LOL. And the kids wanted each of them to have a photo xmas card on the bag. :lmao:

our principal is very hands on. she knows the kids names, she goes in classrooms, etc.

Couldn't agree more!!!!

Not throwing flames, but I also disagree. Teachers do NOT "make the big bucks." My BIL (lives in the same town I do) has a Master's Degree and his starting pay at the company he works for was around $75K. That's standard in this area for a job that requires a Master degree. Do teachers make that much? Heck no, about half that. I don't think our principals make that much. JMO.

to the OP - Ha! Heck no! I hate our principal and can't wait until she leaves. The only thing I would leave on her desk is a bag of coal.

But even if I liked the principal, can you imagine if EVERY child in a school brought something for the principal? I can't image 400 little gifts and trinkets are needed.

I agree most teachers and principals I know def do not make the "big bucks". My husband has his doctorate and doesn't make what your BIL does and this is his 8th year in education.

I think $38K for a job requiring a Master's Degree is way underpaid.

Thank you, I could not agree more! Here the starting is a little less than that. And a teacher going into their 5th year makes maybe $38,500.
