Do you bring your own bedding?

That's all well and good...and I do wash my hands several times a day...but, then..as somebody reminded me...We will all still be touching objects during the day that other people touched...and some of those people never washed their hands...We'll be getting on the rides...sitting at tables, touching railings...All kinds of different things...other people before us touched....

I know...I know...I take my hand sanitzer and use it frequently...but, deep down...I also know...I've touched where hundreds of others have touched before me....

I have never taken my own bedding. I have never had problems staying in any hotel room, or on any cruise ship.

I do want to remind you that antibacterial agents do NOT kill viral germs, and excess use will kill good bacteria which can make you prone to more illnesses. Good old fashioned hot water and soap are your best friends.

Yeah..I knew that...I just use the sanitizer soap if I can't get to some place to wash my hands...My niece's husband, who is a doctor, told me that...Like I said...we'll be all over stuff that other people touched before anyway...

I think most of us know that. However, there are some pretty nasty bacterial germs out there. I do go overboard, always have...that's just my nature. The main thing though is keeping your hands clean and out of your face.

I travel alot for work, about 85 nights a year. I never take any of these precautions and I am never sick. There are more germs out there in the parks or wherever you are, you can't avoid it.

I guess I live on the WILD SIDE too - Germs are everywhere, and they use soap and water in industrial size washer and dryers. I pick up more germs walking down the stairwell at work everyday. I don't get sick often, and I feel that being exposed to some germs is actually good for you.

I would rather worry about other things to bring.

I've thought about brining my own sheets to hotels before...but then I thought better of it. The first thing I do in hotels is put the comforter on the floor in the corner. And I will use clorox wipes around the room when we first get there. I also bring slippers for walking around the room. But that is as far as I'll go.

I've been sleeping in hotel rooms my whole life and I'm still alive so I'm not too worried about it. Some germs are good. They will help your immune system. I always worry about kids that are overly protected from germs these days. I hope some superbug doesn't come along some day.

I think at some point we just need to stop ourselves from going overboard. Otherwise we'd end up bringing our own sheets, towels, shower curtains, bath mats, etc. And then we'd bring our own plates and silverware to eat with at the parks. It's just too much.

Sorry, but it is too far for us to drive so we have to fly. I have a hard enough time cramming clothes into one suitcase especially when you have to pack for both warm weather and cooler nights. Keep in mind also that you stand in line with people who cough all over you, sneeze, touch the hand rails, etc. you get the drift. I just take the most reasonable precautions I can and hope for the best. But paying extra to drag my own sheets and then having laundry to do when I get home isn't my idea of a vacation. But if that's yours, hey, go for it. It's all what gives you piece of mind.:)

I'm like Linus, and have to bring my own blanket. The sheets are fine and I don't sterilize the room or anything, but I need my own comforter to sleep. I actually plan my packing around fitting it in the suitcase! How comfortable I am at night makes it worth it!!!

Is there something wrong with that?Yes, germs are important for the vitality of our immune systems but as I mentioned before there are some deadly germs out there. My main thing is just nastiness period.

Before we go overboard????most cashiers in stores already either attempt to maneuver your change in a way that they will not have to touch your hand and the rest of them wear gloves to avoid touching people. So us taking sheets is not any new sign of germ paranoia.

Too each is own. If someone wants to take their own linen and wipe down the room to feel comfortable, more power to them. If others find that silly, they just can continue as they have and more power to them. However, anyone that believes that those rooms are always cleaned throughly and sheets are always changed after each guests...is delusional.

Nope sorry I don't. I work with much worse thru the course of a 12 hr shift so it doesn;t bother me.Plus if I have to worry about bringing bedding as well as the rest of my luggage , it is no vacation and not worth the aggravation

Are you a nurse, per chance??? ;)

Op, no way would I bring all my own stuff. I use common sense, wash my hands before I eat, etc. and I am never, I mean NEVER, sick. I spend 45-50 hours per week with people who have communicable diseases, and I never catch anything.

But to each his own, as another poster (kind of) said.

No we don't bring our own bedding. I used to bring my own pillow but that was because I had allergy issues. For some reason they seem to have cleared up so I no longer do that.

I do bring either lysol or clorox wipes with us to wipe down the remote, phone and door knobs.

You are correct...to each his own. And I choose to think bringing all of that stuff is going overboard.

I've never seen a cashier with gloves on. That's awesome. I'll have to keep my eyes out for that.

When I think of how many people have slept on the mattress and pillows, I really can't see how bringing your own sheets can be of much help. (I would be afraid to see the mattress pad!) We've always checked our sheets when we arrive, and if they look wrinkled, I get them changed. We just returned from a 11 night cruise with 3 dd's. With everything we had to pack, I don't know where I would have fit sheets for four beds. We had 8 suitcases to begin with for the 5 of us. Trust me, USAirways was loving us, with all the bag charges. It was embarassing!!

I am wondering how many people that have brought their own pillows and bedding from home have taken bed bugs home as uninvited guests. Just a thought, i had thought about taking my own linens but heck we are booked in a deluxe, i am sure the bedding is better than i even own.

Just back from a two week vacation. I not only used the sheets and pillows, but I cuddled under the blanket and the comfortor. I do flip the sheet over the blanket/comforter, so it's not in my face, but I am so quickly asleep after a day in the parks, the bedding is not given a second thought.

Nope, I don't bring my own sheets. Just flip down the duvet and the minute my head hits the pillow at WDW, I'm asleep and I don't even have the chance to start thinking about whatever germs might be growing on the linens.

However, I've never seen that documentary that examines the bedding with a black light... maybe it would change my mind?

My son had surgery last year, and I was APPALLED that the hospital had so much hand sanitizer laying around--yet all the soap dispensers were constantly empty!

Sanitizer has its place, but it doesn't replace soap. You'd think hospital staff would know that.

Back to the topic, I'm still tossing around the idea of bringing our own bedding. Last time we stayed anywhere, it was our annual cottage-on-the-lake trip (a rental) and my dd6 got headlice from the bed she slept on. Naturally, that was the one time I forgot to pack her own personal hairbrush, so she used mine....and so did dh and the other kids.

After a midnight trip to Wal-Mart to buy RID for her, and thinking we nipped it in the bud, we found 2 days later that we ALL had lice except dd. Not a lot of fun in the middle of a vacation.

Of course I'm not comparing our rental shack to a WDW resort, but nasties can happen anywhere.
