DSs 1st day of school is my surgery day. He said it was ok that a neighbor friend get him on the bus. (DH is taking me for my surgery). Friend and mother are both saying "too bad you wont be there for DSs 1st day of school"

Are you always the one to send your kids off on their 1st day?

Every time, though I realize that it's not possible for all parents. My son is getting older, 11, and I thought he wouldn't want me to walk him in but, lo and behold, he did!

Don't fret, this is a unique situation. It's so sad that people try to make Mothers feel guilty about every little thing.

If you have to have surgery, there really isn't an option, I guess. I always get my kids off the school every day, not just the first. They would understand if I missed the first one to make sure I stayed healthy and was around for many more years of doing the routine.:D

It's really sad that others would try to make you feel badly about something that's out of your control. I'm sure if you were able to take your DS to school that you would. As long as he's ok with the situation no one else's opinion should matter.

DD is starting kindergarten at the same school she's been going to for the past few years. Since her 1st day is a Tuesday and I'll be working from home I will take her. Otherwise DH would. Next year when she starts a new school I will do what I can to arrange to take her even if it means taking a vacation day.

Even in preschool I have. Your situation is unavoidable. I am sure that before my girls graduate or don't want me there I will have to miss one day for some unavoidable reason. DH gets them off to school on all other days, except the last day of school which I also take off.

This is the first year that I have been working..but I was able to change my hours so I will be there. I have a really great boss!

Don't beat yourself up and don't let others make you feel bad. You're having surgery not getting your hair done!!

Yes, I have always been fortunate to be able to take them, but there are alot of people that can't do it, and who knows, there might come a time I can't take them or heaven forbid, they don't want me to take them! Don't beat yourself up over it! If he's okay with it, then don't worry about it! Those mothers sound very insensitive. Best of luck with your surgery!

Even though I am schedualed to work every year on her first day of school I do take the day off to take her, before it was preschool and now its kindergarten and I will be at the bus stop to put her on there and I will be home to meet her when it comes back....BUT..thats the kind of kid she is, she wants mom to be there both times and would not do well with someone else sending her off. Its not like you are going out shopping or something and just don't want to put your son on the bus, you have surgery and thats a pretty darn good reason to not be there plus if your son doesn't mind then don't let anyone make you feel guilty!

Gosh maybe it is me...........but I don't think the others are trying to make you feel bad(besides of which only person in control of your feelings is you). It is too bad that you won't be there but the up swing is that the surgery is more important. Health is everything and without it.............you would not be there for the rest of there firsts in life. I really don't think the intent was make you feel bad.

And yes I make every opportunity to be there for the first day of school.....but it is not the end of their world if I am not. I hope your surgery is quick easy and does the job. IMP(in my Prayers)

The first 2 days of school I go into work late so I can see the kids off on the bus. It is our yearly tradition. I wouldn't miss it for the world. Before I started working for the BOE I was able to see my kids off daily because I worked 9 - 3. But for the last 4 years I have to be in work by 7:15, which means I never get to see my kids off. So I just tell my office manager that I'm in late on the first 2 days of school, no questions asked.

Don't feel bad about not being there and don't let people make you feel bad about it.

Good wishes on your surgery. :sunny:

I don't have any choice because Mom's SUV IS the School Bus.

But I wouldn't worry about it too much. By the time the kids get to be the age of your DS, they really don't want any of their friends to know they even have a Mom, much less have her at the bus stop waving good-bye with a tear in her eye.

Good luck with your surgery.

Don't make yourself feel guilty about it...... you are having surgery, so it just doesn't work out this time. Good luck with your surgery.
I am working on my kid's first day (but they are teenagers - 9th and 11th grade and they are both going ALL day) and I start at 5:30 am. It's just always been tradition for me to have the day off on their first day...... maybe I'll switch to get the day off.

Yes. Once I made two others take a later flight on a business trip we were all going on so I could walk my kids to school on the first day. But with that said, I'm pretty sure that it means a lot more to me than it does to them. It will do them good to be concerned about YOU rather than you being concerned about them.

Surgery is important, so don't feel guilty about missing the first day of school! I'm sure I'd be feeling like I was missing something, too. One year I was called for jury duty on the first day of school, including the first day of preschool. My DH took the day off, and I had to make sure that he made our annual first-day-of-school snack: chocolate chip cookies (my older kids were scared that he would forget :D ). I ended up getting done early and he chocolate chip cookies were made!

DD doesn't care so much about the seeing her off to school that day as much as the being home that afternoon to hear about it. She's starting 3rd grade this year and was horrified that I might even be contemplating walking her up to the bus on the first day because it would embarass her in front of the 4th and 5th graders.

So don't worry about it...life's too short to worry about what others think of you and the situation.

I came to the conclusion if hard pressed to pick one, I'd go with the afternoon too. Luckily I can take the day off this year so I can be there both morning and afternoon.

Don't lay unnecessary guilt on yourself. Your health is way more important and you need to take care of that first.

I have been around for every one except for 2 years ago. DH and I were both in Florida on a business trip - but we did get home later that afternoon, right after the kids got off the school bus.

At the time, my DD was a junior in HS and my son in 8th grade. My Mom snapped the requisite first day of school photo for me and then DD drove to school. :)

Don't beat yourself up - the surgery is more important.

Don't feel bad...it's surgery, not disinterest! I always put Remy on and get her off the bus since I am a SAHM and DH has to be on base super early. Both last year's first day of school and this year's he will be in Iraq so I take a snapshot/make a documentary on camcorder for him. See if your DH will do that, or even better if you have a camcorder use it. Hope your surgery goes well!! :wave2:

Either my husband or I took our girls to school the first day all through high school. Now they are in college we no longer do that. Well I did one semester with my older daughter but that was only because we were enrolled in the same class. Mmmm, did I take her or did she take me?
Don't feel bad. You have to have the surgery. Your child willbe fine.
