do you ALWAYS get your kids off on their 1st day of school?

My older brothers took me to my first day of kindergarten and 1st grade, and I didn't suffer any emotional damage from it!

Don't worry, just concentrate on healing after the surgery. Good luck!

Yes i always have and Yes i plan to continue doing so
HOWEVER if it was a health concern i would definatly have a friend or relative put them on the bus

YOUR HEALTH is way to important to mess with
there will be many other days for you to put your child on the bus TAKE CARE of you and if anyone gives you any guilt just ignore them

:wizard: pixie dust for you that all goes well for your surgery

I generally take off the first day of school to be sure there are no glitches in the bus transportation, etc.

My sons are 11 and 12, and they really don't NEED me to be there. I do it for myself, more than for them. :)

You don't have a choice in the matter - don't let anyone make you feel bad about it.

Nope. I teach HS in another district and leave way before they do (except for the one in Jr. High, we leave about the same time now). I jimmied some classes around for the first day of K for DD#1 and DS, although with my schedule I wasn't able to do that for DD#2. Grandma filled in just fine that year, and since DH gets them off to school each day it's not like no parent is with them.
Occasionally I get things like "why don't you come eat lunch with me at school like so and so's mother?" My answer (besides "she doesn't have a job") is that since I teach I can't, but remember I take a personal day every year for Halloween, have been known to call in sick or take half a sick day for special events, and have every vacation and summer with them.

I also don't think saying "too bad you won't be there on your son's first day of school" is bad. They probably thought they were commiserating, not judging. If you are used to taking him to his first day, then I agree it's "too bad" you'll miss it. However that certainly doesn't mean I think you're a bad mom for missing it!

I've missed occasions in my kids lives (like field trips or programs) and I've always thought it was "too bad" as in "not ideal timing". I've never met a mom who hasn't missed something.
