Do we really need golf carts for our stay?

I am posting this for my friend, so here goes:

We are coming in Jan with 2 kids- a 7yo and 5yo and camping for the 1st time at WDW.

Do we really need a golf cart? We are concerned about getting around (bus stops, campfire, etc.)?

Is there a bus system that will help us around and therefore alleviate the necessity of a cart?

If you do feel it is a necessity-what company have you rented from-do you have to get it or will they bring it to the campground for you?

Also-can you bring a wagon onto the Disney busses (it does not fold up) rather than a stroller?

It is fun, but not necessary. The internal bus system works just fine.

No, wagons are not allowed on the buses or in the parks.

Do you guys plan on bringing bikes? We brought ours along and did just fine without a golf cart We used the busses to get to the main bus stops and dock for the boat for the parks and used our bikes to get around the Fort and to hop over to WL for breakfast one day. We had a great old time and didn't even wish for a golf cart (well, DS did, but I told him they were for people who don't have bikes! )

When we camped last October (1600 loop) we found the bus system to be very good. We had bicycles with us, but only used them a few times.

We planned one day to spend at the Fort, and rented a golf cart (from the campground) for that day, and had a blast with it. It is really fun just driving around with it ("looping"), and there are a bunch of "mini roads" just for golf carts.

We did not think that we "needed" a cart while we were there.

I never need to camp I just always want to. The same with a g/c, I never need one at the fort, just always take mine so i always have one.

So it is not need but rather want.

We did the same thing as MadFF. We brought our bikes and only used them a few times. The day we spent at the CG we rented a cart and had a blast. I went home and bought one after our last trip. Its not necessary but a fun way to get around. The buses work great too, just study the schedule and the bus colors it can be confusing your first time.

I have never rented a cart. I do bring a bike, and use it on days when I'm spending the day at the Fort - but even the bike is not necessary.

I didn't find the buses to be confusing. I stay in the cabins, and there are two bus routes that go through the cabins - purple and orange. Both bus routes will go between the Settlement Depot and the Outpost Depot, so you can catch transportation to the parks. The main difference is the Orange bus goes by the Meadow Trading Post and main pool. There are maps at every bus stop, but after my first day, I didn't need a map.

Golf Carts are definitely not necessary. The buses are a great way to get around the campground, are not hard to use, but can add 20 minutes to your commute time if they are running late. That said, they seem to have gotten better with that in the last year and we rarely have more than a ten minute wait for a campground bus. We have gone to bikes as our preferred method of getting around the campground. It is a safe area to bike, and you can get around pretty fast.

It's just not that big a place to need a golf cart. We walk almost everywhere, and, where we can't, we ride the buses. You're going to walk 5 miles in the parks, what is an extra 1/2 mile.

Golf Carts at Fort should only be for those who are disabled, or, the cronicly slack. Everyone else shouldn't have any problems.

I have athritis in both knees and get round quite well at the Fort.

We walk everywhere. It's great excersize. We do have to bring the stroller for our 4 yr old. He could never walk that much. Guess we'll resort to the buses when he's a little older. I just hate waiting on the internal buses.

We tried the bike thing one year, and of course everytime we got off the bus from the parks, it was dark and raining....this past may, we budgeted for a golf cart.

Plus after a full day at epcot sampling the local beverages from around the world, well, the bike ride was really, really long!!

We brought our bikes and got around just fine - for the parks - we ended up buying a stroller for our 5 year old - he needed one - it was just too much walking (well - he was sick part of our stay also) - but I would plan on having a stroller plan for your 5 year old. For our trip in December 2008 we had this sweet little baby - an antique twins stroller - wish we had brought it in October - my daughter would have really appreciated it even though she is nearly 10.

We stayed in the cabins for 5 days and never waited longer than 5 minutes for an internal bus. They ran constantly between the two outposts. I debated renting the cart and I'm glad I didn't waste my money.
