Do we like to be offended nowadays!

After reading some of the posts on the DIS lately and in our local paper. Do you think people today (in our out of control PC world) look for reasons to be offended just so they can complain about it.

I just think there's something in the air today or something. I'm seeing this attitude on several posts here on the DIS, and getting the same thing from my "friends" in email.

I think that so many trivial things offend people that the truly offensive becomes obscure. There are offensive things/attitudes in this world today. There is war, famine, bigotry, poverty, and abuse, to name a few.

Seems like people get offended about everything now. Really most of the cases are things they have no reason to take offense to but are looking to pick apart the situation.

I think that if someone tells me they are offended, I should listen to them and try to understand why. I don't blow it off as being "overly PC" just because I personally wouldn't be offended in the same situation. We all have different levels of tolerance for things - I don't judge those whose tolerance is a bit lower than mine as overly "PC".

I hate the term "PC". It's way overused IMO. I don't think people complain more than they used to - I think people blow off others concerns as "overly PC" more than they used to. JMO.

I don't know if "we" want to be offended nowadays , but don't "we" like to start threads just to digs at other people's threads nowadays!

It's easy not to take offense when we aren't the ones being offended.

I really agree with this. I think it is way out of hand. I could find reasons every day to be offended. I choose not to.

Sure, I think there are some people who look for reasons to be offended when none really exists--just as there are some people who puposefully choose to be offensive when no reasons really exist.

I think a lot of times people post when they're upset. A week later they aren't as upset.
I think if someone posts that they are offended by something and then 9 out of 10 posters say "I wouldn't have taken it that way" or "That wouldn't have bothered me" they should step back and look at the situation again.
If everybody comes back with "I'd be so offended too" then, yes, the poster is right to be offended.
ETA: I'm not saying they shouldn't have hurt feelings or whatever. Just that they should step back and look at the situation from a different perspective.

I'm not talking about empathy, if that was the case then the people taking offense would be offended in their own right.
I'm talking about situations where the assumption is made that people of another race, creed or colour would be offended, regardless of whether they are or not, because the person thinks they ought to be.
An example would be a white person complaining about the use of the phrase "accident black spot" because they think it would offend a black person even though no black people had actually complained themselves.

Hmmmm. Are you suggesting that some people post to intentionally offend others? Now, why would someone want to do that? That just seems downright rude to me. Just sounds like someone wanting to start a fight.
