Do they need proof of age for my little ones at the gate? Or is it on the honor system? Just want to know if I need to bring paperwork? Anyone been asked for it before?

It's been asked a million times and the answers you get depends on what you ask.:lmao:

The answer is 'no they don't ask you for paperwork' and provided your little one looks like the typical toddler/ early preschooler no one will bat an eye. And don't let you anyone tell you any different.

Now if your 2 year old looks like he/she is really 5 or 6.................they will likely 1)refuse to believe you and 2)refuse free admission. But then you knew that anyway didn't you ;)

Now just sit back and get ready as the masses come out to tell you how honest THEY are and how horrible those 'OTHER' people are. Doesn't matter what your original question was. Close enough LOL

They work on the honor system. I can imagine you could be asked at anytime to show proof of age, but I haven't seen on here anytime that someone has been called out on it.

If you don't want to take a birth certificate with you, see if there is a children's fair near that has a booth that will make little ID cards for you. We have a festival every summer and the big children's hospital (here in the state) sets up a booth and will make little ID cards with all of the kid's information: picture, name, birth date, parent's name(s), birthmarks, allergies, phone numbers, etc. We've had these made up the last 2 years and they are perfect to keep on hand.

Well if they did require proof, these ID cards wouldn't work. Any time they have asked of proof of ID, such as for the Birthday Promo, for a child it has been a Government Issued ID. A school ID doesn't even work.

As for needing proof, Cheshire Figment a CM on these boards works at the front gate of TL and he has had managers brought in for a few obvious situations. He posted at least once about parents stuffing their obviously not under 3 child in a stroller, putting a pacifier in their mouths, have then hold a teddy bear and claim they are 2. Well the you can imagine how embarrassed this 5 year old is when they take him out of the stroller.

So yes its the honor system but only to a point.

If your child is nearing 3rd birthday, or is an older-looking 2yr old, you might want to consider bringing proof (this coming from someone who HATES when people think I'm cheating, I just feel better having proof on hand). It IS on the honor system. We haven't been asked to show birth certificate, but CMs at the gate have been "chatting with" our other kids and happened to ask how old their little sister is.

I have, once, seen a family have to get out of line and go to the ticket window. I don't know if it was to see a manager, or if they fessed up and had to go buy a ticket. I just know they had a NOT-Under-3 child in a stroller, argued for a little while, and then the ticket window was pointed out to them. They DID have other kids with them, so it's possible one of them slipped up...or the big kid in the stroller slipped.

If you stick to your guns and keep insisting your child is 2, I bet you get in...but having proof might get you in without feeling accused of lying.

I never had a problem. My youngest daughter is almost as big as her older sister (2 years older). There is only a slight difference in between their heights. I suppose since she appeared to be on the level of a 2 year old and we readily had a ticket for the 4yr old they didn't even think about it.

AirTran accepted it as a form of ID for DS(3) last year. Regardless, they are darn nice to have on hand in case the unthinkable happens and you can't think straight enough to give important info over to the authorities.

They used to make pocket birth certificates with official seals on them but they are no longer considered valid. I wouldn't want to carry around official documents if I don't have to because I don't trust anything not to happen to them.

OP asked for ideas... that was mine and it works for us.

I just wanted to point out that Disney does not accept these cards as a proper form of ID. Not sure why Airtran needed or even accepted it as ID since most people can make them on their PC.

It still is a good idea to have this info.

I'm about to go on a week trip with my son's high school band and we use similar cards to keep track of who is or isn't off the bus. If they are on the bus they have there card if they leave the bus, they hand the card to a chaperon. When they get back they take their card back. If the chaperon has all the cards everyone is on the bus.

This time we are adding their pictures just in case.

Airtran probably accepted it as ID because a 3 year old didn't need any ID in the first place. I bet they would NOT have accepted it as proof they were under 2 and could fly as a lap child (birth certificate required).

i tried to get away with it last year but failed....dont care what anyone says....my 17 year old DD did almost fit in the stroller so i almost got away with it

I am so doing this! What color baby boonet would best cover up my DH's gray hair?

tell him to shave it all off...this my help even more...just make sure that as you walk up to the gate say somthing like "if one more person mentions my babys slightly rustic looking face im sure i will just burst in to tears" they will be so afraid to hurt your feelings they wont even look and you can sail stright by

I was not asked for proof for my DS when he was 2.5 and when he was almost 3 (went the week before his birthday). Even so, I'm like TaxiMom and am always worried that someone won't believe me, so I did take an official document, just so I had it. Our state will issue official ID's for children, so I had that made for DS. It was $10 and I actually now carry it all the time behind my drivers license.

So look into that as a possibility. I know some states will issue children's ids and others will not.

Glad I stumbled onto this informative yet hysterical thread...

I ~would~ have been one of those families who argued with the ticket folks... not for trying to sneak in.. but for truly thinking 3 year-olds got in for free...! I have been sitting here planning our trip thinking that we wouldn't need to get DS3 a ticket this year. I feel so foolish! Ugh, sometimes my brain fails me!! lol!

It would have been funny to me... but I bet DH would have thrown a fit, till he realized I had it wrong.. I can see him now in line.. No sir, he doesn't need a ticket!!! oh... he ~does~ need a ticket.. sorry sir! :lmao:

.

Thanks for posting this, its something I didnt give a thought to, my son is 2, 3 in March and is huge for his age! He is in 4/5yrs clothes and very tall, he is quite grown up for his age as well and I doubt we will be using a pushchair. I till take some ID with me just in case.

Cheers
Lizzy
