Do they ever cancel the Luau for rain or just when it is too cold?? I am trying to decide if I need a back up plan.

Yes - in fact they cancelled it last night and the night before, because of the cold. They don't cancel just for rain - the area is covered - but they will cancel for a severe storm.

Thanks, that is what I was afraid of. I don't go for another month but looks like I should have a back up!!

We stay at the Poly and I have only seen it cancelled once and that was for a thunderstorm and when it was I can tell you it was chaos in the lobby as people tried to make alternative arrangements.:scared:

We stayed at the Poly last august and the luau was cancelled at least twice due to the weather. The resort lobby was MOBBED as a result.

There was a report last month of someone who went and while it should have been cancelled, they fed them then cancelled the show and refunded one credit

If you are on cash, inconvenient but you can make other plans. If you are on a dining plan,. and it is your last night, you may end up losing the credits if you can't scramble and find a signature to go to

I would advise not doing this on your last night, just in case :)

We stayed at the Polynesian during Thanksgiving 2006. It closed once or twice because it was so cold (the pirate cruise at Grand Floridian was cancelled for the cold and wind too). We did the Luau on Thanksgiving day and luckily the weather was okay for us.

Our Luau is scheduled mid-trip but I don't want to scramble with a 3 and 5 year old!! We are getting DDP so I think I will make a reservation elsewhere as well then be able to cancel once we see what the weather is that week. I did look and to my surprise there are ADRs available at a lot of places that night.

With the fridgid cold snap Last month (Jan) I believe it was cancelled every night a week straight (or longer).

They cancelled when we were there in jan. and the wait for the luau people to get into Ohana's was over 2 hours. It was a madhouse.

I think the report from someone who was to have gone last night was that all the guests were put into Ohana, meaning a huge wait time there.

I don't see how that would be possible. Ohana is usually booked solid irrespective of the luau. The luau was cancelled several times on our trip in January for (very) cold weather. Made for a lively time at the bar.

Stayed at the poly once in July and it was canceled twice while we were there(I don't think it's nightly though?) and both times the lobby was PACKED. everyone had the deer in headlights looks about them. The waiting till the last minute to cancel is the problem I think. People all decked out in their luau stuff with no place to go.

We were there during that cold snap - our Jan 2, Sat. night Luau was canceled... But we were able to get a reservation for Ohana for the same time and had a great view of the fireworks! Had a great time anyway. We were worried about the tickets really being refunded, The credit was on the credit card within days. No problem.

Maybe we will make the Luau next time!

They cancelled our show last August due to severe weather, but fed us first. We also got 2 TS credits back instead o 1 and were able to book 2 more table service meals during our trip.:rolleyes1

Of all our years going to the Luau every trip, we've only been cancelled once. It was a storm that had settled in for the night. Usually they wait to see if the rain is going to let up, but this just wasn't going away. We were given our dining plan credits back. We were able to get in at the Grand Floridian Cafe to eat that night, which took one of our credits and then booked another TS credit for another free night we had.
