I had a quick q about the weather.... it seems like the waterparks are going to be a good idea since its so hot out...however, do they shut down for rain? I'm hoping there are just short rain showers while we are there but I would hate to make it all the way to the waterpark and then it shuts down due to rain. Thoughts?

Rain.... no. Thunder and lightning.... yes.

What Maggie's Mom said

Swimming in the rain is actually nice. The crowds thin out, and you're wet anyway

We will close all slides and attractions, and clear the beach, only if there is electrical activity within five miles of the Park, and will not go back to normal operation until the activity is more than five miles away and receding.

For just rain, no matter how heavy, we will maintain full operations.

And my response to a person who asked why we had closed was: "Do you know how much paperwork is involved if a Guest gets struck by lightning?"

:rotfl2: I can only imagine.

That's awesome.

So Cheshire, I've always valued your advice over the past few years. I'll be at Typhoon on June 17th. I rented 2 umbrellas for 6 people, do I need them or not??? Havent been there in years so cant remember how shady it is. Thanks!

Hard to answer that question. Due to my age and disabilities I do not do water parks, and when I am working I only go as far as the front gate area. I really do not wander the park. And last time I went to a beach I had to have people help me to get up from the sand because of leg problems and nothing really solid to push against.

I didn't know you could rent the umbrellas in advance, how is that done?

Thanks,
Sharon

Both water parks have cabana and reserved umbrellas with tables is roped-off areas. These are extra cost and can be reserved in advance. For details and reservations, call 407-WDW-PLAY.

Thank you very much! I thought we reserved the upon arrival so this was excellent information.

Much appreciated!
Sharon

Just curious...how is "electric activity" monitored and detected? I'm sure in this day and age, there is pretty sophisticated gadgets, but is there an alarm or something that goes off when it's in range?

Thanks!

I am not sure if the last part of your response was supposed to be humorous, but if so, probably not so to anyone who has had friends or family members die due to to being struck by lightning.

Typhoon lagoon did close due to heavy rain on June 17, 18, and 19 of this year. They closed the park for 3 days and it was not lightening all day all three of them days. Of course we added the waterpark option to our tickets on June 16 talk about a waste of money we were not happy.

I have seen what looks like about a 42 inch monitor on the wall at Base Operations with a weather display on it. I believe the feed is directly from the National Weather Service and is the same feed that goes to all the TV stations and forecast companies. In addition, there are a lot of lightening detectors located on/around WDW Property.

At BB they have a weather station up on the mountain where they moniter via computer and watching the sky etc when weather might be an issue.

And to the poster who was upset about TL being closed on the days they were there in June, Blizzard Beach did not close. They remained open till regular closing time, so you could have used your WP option there.

This month there has been closings due to capacity for parts of the day a few times at BB . So advise go early or wait till late afternoon.
