Do the resorts overbook?

Just curious, if they do, and what do they do with the extra guests? Do you upgrade to a better resort, or one the same level?

I'm just wondering, and actually hoping that this isn't the case, because that would mean bigger crowds.

But if it did, I would not be satisfied to go to another value. We are booked at Pop, but are not at all interested in the All-stars.

Just wondering?

Generally WDW resorts don't overbook, although it does happen.

When it does, all they are required to do is give you a room at a comparable resort. Usually they'll sweeten the pot by comping part of your stay, throwing in some free meals or something along those lines if you aren't upgraded.

If you are upgraded to another resort, you geneally aren't given a choice, it's where ever there are rooms available. And when you are upgraded, don't expect much more in terms of compensation.

In other wods, if Pop walks you, don't expect to end up on the CL at the GF. More than likely it would be to CBR or CS.

If you are at all worried about ending up at another value, check in as early in the day as you can. IMHO, it's those who check in late that are most likely to be bumped.

Three or four years ago we were checking into the WL and they asked if we would be interested in staying at the YC instead, at no additional charge. We turned then down. I assume they were overbooked and found some volunteers later in the day. We were checking in a little before noon.

One year we had paid for a king bed at POR. There were none available when we checked in (around 6pm), so they gave us a waterview and didn't tell us that we didn't have the king. We walked into a room with 2 double beds and called to complain. After some serious time spent arguing with the manager who wanted to put us on a waitlist for something we already paid for or comp us one night's stay, we ended up at the Polynesian. We told her we would be happy moving to another mod, but we wanted the king bed. She tried to tell us that she didn't have to do anything; however, my dh used to be a manager for Hyatt, so he knew the rules. We did ask for the Polynesian or the Beach Club after the manager checked the other mods first.

I stayed at BCV when it was overbooked. They were bumping guests to BC and YC.

No real reason for Disney not to overbook since they have more than enough rooms to move people to. You could probably make a point of saying you don't want the Allstars and get bumped to a moderate. Alternately you could probably talk them into bumping someone else, unless you checkin real late.

Lewis,

Interesting, how were they handling people who were parties of eight who had booked a 2 BR villa? Were they giving them suites or CL rooms? I think that would be a really sticky situation for them, as many buy/bring groceries to have some meals in their rooms. I think people would be pretty ticked if my milk, cereal and OJ was sitting in a fridge in the luggage room while I had to go spend money on breakfast.

Also, did those people get their points credited back? The space in two concierge rooms at the YC is still not equivelent to the pace and amenities in a 2BR villa...washer/dryer, DVD player, seperate living room, etc.

Anne--I was told they first moved all the guests with cash reservations. I think they were giving the guests whatever it took to make them happy. I had a 1 bedroom with rented points. I offered to go to BWV but they were also full. I told them I wanted the kitchen and had relatives staying at the Dolphin so I wasn't interested in going to WLV. After 6:00 I got a nice unit but a toxic odor was so bad that the bellhop didn't even take the luggage off the cart. My daughter got an asthma attack. They had replaced some carpet and the toxic odor was from the glue that was used to cement it down. Disney comped us dinner at Spoodles and told us to come back. I think we wound up getting a unit that was scheduled to have work done. The phone wasn't connected and we were short towels among other things. There were numerous service issues during out stay.

We came from PBH and knowing the DVC units are rarely available for early check in we didn't even get to the resort until almost 5:00p.

I was told that Disney, like most hotels, actually hold back around 5% of the rooms. This is done to accommodate guests that don't leave and to allow for rooms that need to be repaired.

About 2 years ago during Easter we were going to check in at the All Stars and they told us that they were sorry and we had to be moved to a different resort. Well were mad because if the inconveinence but we didnt have a choice of what we wanted. So to make a long story short we were upgraded to the POLY in a standard room and got a free dinner for wherever we wanted to go. So I always wish that it be full again when we go back and get lucky enough to stay at the POLY again! ;)

Lewisc, thanks for the info!

I'm curious about something that my memory is failing me on.. In the past, was a king bed just a request at moderates and not something you could specifically book? It seems like I remember this from a stay at CSR.

As of a couple years ago it was guaranteed if you paid the extra fee for it, which apparantly she did. In that case they owed her a king bed, and needed to find her one even if it was in a presidential suite at the GF.

I really don't think I am going to be bumped, as it is not a peak time. Just wondering.

I had just read in another thread, that people were being relocated, so I was curious if Disney overbooked, and how accomadating they were to the people, if they are moved.

Most hotels do overbook because you can count on your arrivals being a partial wash (that means you will have some no shows). I imagine Disney does not overbook all the time but that it does happen.

As I understand it, in the US, they are only required to give you a room at another resort. Some places will comp the room and some won't. I suggest that you give Disney a call if you would like to really find out.

It seems like with the five day cancellation requirement, they wouldn't get many no shows.

This was in 2000-after king bed became its own room category.

But she accepted the Polynesian, which does not even have any King size beds. So she did not get a King size bed, just an upgrade. And at most resorts, a King bed is still a "request" only.

Which was her perrogative. I would have accepted that as well. But I wouldn't have accepted a room with a double bed either had I booked and paid for king, as DH and I can not sleep together in one. We can make do in a queen though, which is what she did. Double beds are the number one reason we won't stay value/moderate.
