Do the deer in your area look both ways before crossing?

I know I know, it sounds crazy. But someone the other day mentioned it to me, and by golly now that she mentioned it, I can visualize what she's talking about. It seems like I can remember seeing deer pausing before they cross the road, and since their eyes are facing outward, it's like they know to look for cars before they cross. Well, some do. Others just dart.

NJ is overrun with deer - sometimes the first one of the pack stops to look, but once the pack is moving they don't stop at all.

Obviously Ohio (near Lake Eerie) deer are much smarter than ones from other areas around the country.

I always appreciate the deer who make that extra effort to wait until the little man in the crosswalk signal appears, letting them know it's safe to cross. If you think about it, these are the genius deer because a normal deer would not put 2 + 2 together and realize, "Hey, that little MAN means I, a DEER, can now safely cross." No, the normal IQ deer would either dart across or wait for a little DEER figure to appear in the signal.


You'd think with all the dullard deer being wiped out by fast-moving cars that we'd now have nothing but SUPERDEER left, but I guess the dumb ones must multiply faster.

Nope, they just run straight into you, and where there's one, more will usually follow. One destroyed dh's car, and we've both had some close calls.

I don't know about deer as we don't see them at the road as much ( they tend to cross in the smaller side roads and paths for example our main road through town has a few spaces where old unused railroad tracks were turned into a walking path. So they can cross under there.

However I have definitely seen dogs look and wait until there were no cars when not on a leash. Same with cats.

I've seen a lone deer do this while at my parents. I thought it was a one-off but I guess I was wrong.

I live close to the Metroparks which are very populated with deer. They don't really look both ways but many times they do stand on the side of the road and stare at cars before slowly crossing instead of just darting out. They are just so used to humans here.

I've been out on runs and managed to get so close I probably could stab one if I lunged fast enough. I always think how easy deer hunting must be when I can run up on one and they barely look let alone run away. I'm more worried they'd get spooked and run at me then anything which is why I stop and wait for them to move along in those situations.

Some just sit on the side of the road eating while you drive by and you hope they do not decide to cross.

Generally they dart. I live in an area heavily populated by deer.

Sidenote: I think this was eventually revealed as a hoax call. This same radio station is the one that had a call from someone with the same voice saying that they were going to hand out letters to overweight children instead of candy on Halloween.

I've seen them stop when they realized a car was coming. Always a calm deer in a quiet spot. In heavy traffic, they get too used to the noise and are usually somewhat confused as to where it comes from. Also, deer that are fleeing tend not to pay attention, nor rutting bucks (even if in a calm state).

I've seen some stop and look, and some just dart out, but not one of them ever seems to cross where the 'Deer Crossing" signs are!

Similar here in Southwestern PA. Sometimes the first one looks, sometimes it doesn't. However none of the rest of the pack look. If the first one goes, they all go. And God forbid they can all go together! They all have to travel single file! Sometimes you have to wait a bit for the whole herd to get across.

Ours look before crossing. If you stop, they'll come up, clean your windows and beg for change too.

Not quite true, but the deer population around here have no fear of people, but have a casual disdain for them instead.
