do room points ever increase?

Over the years, have the number of points for a room (say a studio) ever gone up for the same time period?

Also have the different seasons changed over the years to lessen the purchasing power of your points?

Thinking of buying a small number of points in a resale and wonder if they would ever decrease in their room point value.

Right now 10 points gets you one night in a studio Sun-thu in late MAY at OKW. Was it ever less than 10 points?

By contract, Disney cannot raise the total amount of points it "charges" to stay in the DVC resorts. So yes, they can raise the point requirement for a specific accommodation for a specific time of the year, but they would have to reduce the point requirements on that accommodation for some other part of the year.

Disney reserves the right to "shift" the point structure in order to create an even load balance across the year and even days of the week for each resort.

To my knowledge, they've only done this once, and it was minor. The details escape me, but I believe it was early on in the DVC history before they had amassed such detailed records.

So the short answer is yes, they can shift the point requirements. But only if they reduce somewhere else to make it come out even.

Excellent question. I was just wondering the same thing. Thank you to Granny for your excellent insight.

Unfortunately I'm a little slow on the uptake, so let me pose another question...

I just read that for 2005 early November will no longer be "value" season for Disney resorts. This is our favorite time of year to visit WDW. When figuring how many points we will need, we based it on the 2004 DVC chart...whereby November is considered "choice" season. I guess it is possible that Disney could change this time frame into "magic" season BUT they'd have to lower points from some other time period. Is that right?

Not sure if I get this yet LOL!

back in 95 or 96 - they changed OKW

they made the Adventure Season more - across the board - they make summer (both Dream and Magic) Season less mostly for the weekend - so they took weekday points and use them for weekends..... the also make the weekend points in premier season less.

kept in mind how much DVC has grow and the many thousands of complaints that DVC would get if they ever did this again.....

WDW does not like complaints....

what they might do for Thanksgiving is make it a season of it's own - looks like some of Oct would do into it too.

but again I would think alot of DVC's (especially those with children who can only vacation during spring break, or summer or Thanksgiving) would complaint loudly.

they didn't get that many complaints when they started to change the WDW resorts on a yearly basis - because I really though it time and then some. I mean you could get the lagoon view at the Polyn for 22 points from 1992 to 2001.....then it even rented for more than $220 a night. So I though it was fair.

Of course even then - when the Polyn was a bargin compared to the retail price - some DVC were still saying don't do a WDW resort.... Yea I would have rather had a 2-bedroom at OKW - but it was not availabity - the Polyn was.... loved it!!!!

It is a little different and confusing, especially when the destination is WDW for both resorts and DVC.

However, DVC operates completely independently from the Disney resort system. So some of the DVC point charts differ quite a bit from the "room rate charts" of the WDW resorts. The seasons don't always line up, nor does the demand.

For instance, early December is a very low demand, low crowd time for WDW resorts and the parks. But it is a high demand time for DVC due to the low point structure during that time.

I don't think DVC point charts will "follow" the seasons the resorts use. Remember, the point of the DVC point allocation is to keep a balance of use throughout the year.

On the other hand, the point of the WDW resort seasons is to charge more when demand is high and they can get more for a room.

Yes, that's right.

I don't think DVC will follow the resorts (regarding the season changes), either.

But if they did increase the number of points per night to stay in November, then yes, they would have to lower the number of points required to stay for other times. The total number of points required to stay in a unit for a year cannot change. So if DVC increases somewhere, it must also decrease by the same amount somewhere else.

In short: You get it just fine!

:D THANK YOU to everyone for their helpful replies. You guys are great.

This forum is a wealth of knowledge. Particularly to those of us trying to get a handle on DVC. Hopefully I'll be hearing "welcome home" soon.

First, I think you can assume DVC will have to adjust the points eventually, complaints or not. And the change in 1995 or 96 may have been minor overall, it was a major change for adventure season. This was in increase in the 15-16% range across the board for all unit sizes during adventure time and minor decreases for the other times to comensate. I doubt we'll ever see such a large change again but you never know.

In fall, 1994, DVC announced the point chart at OKW for 1996. It included changes- raising some point costs and lowering others. The 1996 change is the only re-allocation. Some expect another to be made. I don't expect it unless a significant change is seen in the travel habits of DVC members is noted which would necessitate such change.

The DVC "seasons" for the onsite resorts has not changed at all (except for the annual dates of Easter and Thanksgiving). The point chart for OKW until 1996 was as follows (sorry about the crummy table :( ) :

Do you think they will change SSR according to views once the resort is complete?

No, I don't. If different point structure was to be an issue, it would have been treated that way from the start. As indicated here, some have already shown a preference to be "closer" to the pool area. All buildings in phase 1 and 2 will have a lake view - some will have a look at the main pool and some will have a DD view.

I agree with Doc that they will not have a different point structure.

I think Disney figured out that the better way to handle this, and only if it becomes a BIG issue, is to create different reservation classifications like they did at BWV.

In other words, the same points all around but breaking the views down into a couple of categories. This, to me, is the fairest way to handle things giving the owners at any resort the first shot at highly requested views.

But it will take some time to see if this is a big problem at SSR. It may well be that not everyone cares as much about views of DTD, or proximity to the main pool, or whatever. I think you can look at OKW and see that many prefer to be away from the main building for the quieter setting.

My guess is that SSR won't have a split view category.

In fall, 2004, DVC announced the point chart at OKW for 2006. It included changes- raising some point costs and lowering others.

OK Doc, now did I fall into a time warp and just THINK I'm in the summer of 2004 or is this a prediction?:)
