Do people really tip the pizza delivery person so little?

I think pizza delivery tips have been trending down as the delivery charges have been going higher and higher around here. Its up to $6 here and that’s for places within a mile our house.

We never get delivery anymore since a $10 pizza becomes double the cost with delivery charge and tip. When you’re ordering online it becomes hard to justify a 100% upcharge for a 5 minute drive that somehow takes them 40 extra minutes to drive.

I stopped getting pizza delivered back when they added a fuel charge about ten years ago. I just order and pick up on my way home. I don't know if they even still have the fuel charge but my habit has changed.

When I’ve tipped the delivery driver an appropriate amount, they always act like it’s the best tip ever.

I can tell you, in my day it wasn’t unusual to deliver a $9.95 pizza, have the customer hand me a $10 bill, then stick out their hand for me to return the nickel.

I usually tip them 20% based off the food price, not the delivery fee included. I used to do pizza delivery 20 years ago and brought home pretty good money in tips, but I cant imagine doing delivery now with the cost of gas wear and tear on your car.

I always tip $10.00. Gas, wear and tear on their car, saving me the time to go out and get it myself, $10.00 is well worth it.

Thanks to horrible traffic where we live, it takes 30 minutes to go a mile and a half between 5:30p and 7:30pm which is when we tend to order a pizza. It's going to get even worse once the big subdivision across from our little one is built and the one 1/2 a mile down the road is complete.
I used to pick up the pizza but that was 5 years ago before all the subdivisions went up.
Now we have pizza delivered once in a while otherwise we don't have pizza. They have a 2.50 delivery charge and I also tip 18% knowing they will be the ones dealing with all that horrible traffic.

I tip at least 5.00 for a delivery, even if it is one pizza-never less than 5.00. I delivered pizza when I was a teen and I still can remember this one order- every other Friday it would come in for 2 pizzas with everything including anchovies and 2 bottles of coke- the guy had a poker game and would order food for the game- he would tip me 20.00 every time! This was back in 1981 so 20.00 was a big deal- pizzas were less than 10.00 with everything on it.

The delivery fee does not go to the driver. It goes to the restaurant. And they aren’t always paid for their gas and when they are it’s just a few cents per mile. Also, their pay goes down when out on delivery. So while they are in the store, it’s say $8.00 an hour and it goes to $3.00 while delivering, since it is a tipped position.

Dd quit when it started costing her money to work.

When I lived in NYC and regularly ordered takeout I would usually tip a couple of dollars which was automated through seamless's website/app. I don't order delivery anymore since in LA there is usually some type of service fee and delivery fee which could double the cost of the meal.

THAT is a bargain. Our favorite place is $24.99 for a large. A create your own with one topping is $19.99. I just checked one of their competitors and they charge $28.50 for a large. Checked one more, they are $22.75 for one topping.

I’ve found, when it comes to pizza, you get what you pay for. I’ll pay $25 for my pizza any day over the $11.99 one advertised.

The college route was my undoing. Almost everyone I delivered to was a broke college kid. It only paid well for things like frat & dorm parties where I was bringing several pizzas at a time.

My roommate delivered for a rival pizza place on the opposite side of town where the rich folks lived. He also had a MUCH smaller car and he cleaned up. Even on my best nights, the “mileage” barely covered my gas, and definitely not wear & tear.

A question I never understood....Why is a delivery charge charged, that goes to the restaurant, even if the driver is using their own car, own fuel, whatever? What's the delivery fee for?

We order delivery fairly often. We tip between $5 & $10, depending on what we order & how far away the restaurant is. Most of the time we order food for two, but occasionally order for three. We never penalize the driver for the delivery fee. If I had a problem with the delivery fee, I would order from a different restaurant or not place an order for delivery at all. The drivers can't control how much the restaurant they work for charges for delivery.

We typically tip 20%, sometimes a little more if the weather is crappy or it has saved us running out during a game, etc. Most of our local restaurants (not chains) have free delivery. My friends say I tip more people more often than I should, but my husband and I both worked as servers and have tipped fairly well since. My husband delivered for a local pizza and sub shop in high school...one time a customer was short about 10 bucks for his actual delivery order, much less having money for a tip. It’s a small town, DH says no problem, I’ll cover you myself and you can pay me back next time. Well, the very next day that same customer orders, then hands DH exact change (no payback), no tip, and shuts the door in his face. It takes all kinds haha.

Even better, make it all from scratch--we have a bread maker that makes the dough, and buy the pizza sauce (you could make that from scratch, too) and toppings. In our house, Friday nights are "Dad's Pizza Night"--he helps each of the kids make their own pizza. It's hugely popular all around.

We don't bother with delivery around here--it costs more, and it's too easy to just pick stuff up. When we're on vacation, my kids consider it "luxurious" to get food delivered--then, I tip $5 or so, rounding up if I pay in cash (i.e., if it's $24.50, I'll give them $30).
