Do People Not Know How To Order Fast Food? [Vent]

I guess I take things in perspective. In New York City, in every last single fast food joint I have ever been to, whether Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, etc... the cashiers mumble something unintelligible and stare at you with something akin to utter hatred and complete disdain while you place your order. And then they bark at you to step aside and stand next to anywhere from 2-6 other people who just placed their order with said cashier and you have to wait.

90 seconds? 60 seconds? New York City doesn't have fast food. We have "stand there and wait because I damn well told you to and you won't get your food until I feel like getting off my rear and hand it to you and I don't care if it takes more than 10 minutes food."

Oh and better still, my favorite retort from a cashier, "Go ahead and tell the manager. He won't care either." Again with the glazed over, hate filled stare.

So I would LOVE to go to any of those "talkative" fast food joints you all have. And they can chat away! AND offer me an apple pie! AND I won't ask for any custom orders! Promise!

Soooo Very true....Since I practically live in New Jersey now (schools there, boyfriends there, friends are there....) and have for the past 5 years, I don't really see this a lot. But when I'm home...ooooh my...
I begin working in the mall here today, and I can't wait to have to deal with these people on a daily basis whenever I go to get lunch/dinner. What's worse is that half of these people, people who have to interact with other people every day, cannot speak english!!!!
We went to a McDonalds once, and after ordering, my mother said to a little girl who was next to us "you're ice cream cone looks good!". Our cashier proceeded to bring out two ice cream cones, and then yelled at my mother when she told her we did not order them! Her arguement was "you order! you order!" and she stared blankly at my mother when she replied "No, I was simply telling the little girl that hers looked good..." She then turned to the cashier next to her who said something in another language and they both started laughing
I realize immigrants need jobs, and I have nothing against that, but I really don't think they should be dealing in situations where it is neccessary that they understand English 100%, and can speak it as well.

*chuckle* Rick. I can not imagine. :p

The last 3-4 times I've been to McDonalds. I will say "May I have a #4 w/a coke....." and before I can continue they yell "PULL FORWARD!". Ummmm I am not done yet. Today I start to give my order and the lady said something NOT in english... screaming through the speaker. I don't think it was totally meant for me, but I had to wait about 2 minutes before I could place my order.

Oh boy. got the cashier from heck at Zaxby's today. The 4 of us walk up and I ask DH if he knows what he want. He said no so I ask DD.

She will have a nuggets kids meal

Is that what you are ordering

That is what she is ordering

I ask DS if he wants to share 20 wings.
We will have 20 wings, nuclear

She walks of and gets DD cup and says to someone behind the counter .Now I know why I hate it here I have to get the cups

Did you want wings or strips

wings

Dh then orders
I'll have a grilled chicken ceasar salad

Did you want a salad

Yes a grilled chicken ceasar salad

grilled or fried

grilled
What sauce did you want, oh I mean what dressing do you want

Do you not have ceasar dressing for the ceasar salad

yes is that what you want

uh yes

anything else

yes we need drinks I'll have water

Ok your total is

Can the rest not order drinks?

I then walk off because I can't stand it anymore. Food actually came as we ordered it. I was amazed.

Another one that I remember from Wendys....Cust:I want a Single with everything.Cashier:Do you want cheese on that?(Have to ask about that because cheese is extra)
1st Scenerio with customer: Did I say cheese? If I wanted cheese I would ask for it(He said everything... we were just trying to clarify the order so there would not be any mistakes)
2nd Scenerio with customer:I SAID EVERYTHING!! Doesn't cheese mean everything???(Again...cheese is extra so we HAD to ask.)

So you see there are always at least two ways of seeing things.

As far as suggestive selling...it is a REQUIREMENT at most places. The big bosses do not care HOW the cust said "Nothing else...thats all.. etc..." We still HAD to ask. Also there WERE occasions where a customer would order a sandwich and forgot to order a drink till they got to the window. If we suggested a drink most times it would remind the customer they forgot to order a drink, etc.

I have always said that EVERYONE should work in a fast food place for at least one week. It ought to be a high school requirement in order to graduate!!! The people that work there are underpaid...under appreciated...and are treated like dirt by most customers. Yes there are idiots out there but there are idiot customers also!!!

In college I worked vacations for McDonald's. Regardless of what some say, the stores offer good opportunities for students. I will add that I hated every minute of it.

I was an opener and worked through lunch (typically 5a.m. ish - 1 p.m. ish). One morning my first customer came through and sounded very drunk. Ordered a breakfast. He drove around to the window and I took his money. As I was giving him his change, he told me he wanted to change his order--I'm thinking, "great, now I have to get the manager." The man grabs my arm and starts to drive away!!!! I screamed and he let go. He hit the building, knocked a few bricks out and then drove away--without his order. I was lucky all I got was a few bruises on my wrist and shoulder where he pulled me into the sliding window. It really scared me and my manager. The manager reported it to the police and I had to give the best description of the car I could--didn't think to get the tag I was so scared.

My pet peeve as a worker was when parents with toddlers would stand their children on the counter or sit their little diapered butts on the counter. Hello here! I have to put your food there. Think about it people!

I got to be behind one of the stupid drive thru customers yesterday. I was in a rush to get back to my office since I had to go to Target for Valentines for the kids... gotta go on lunch since that's the only time they aren't with me... had to get back to work for a meeting....

So, I pull up to BK's drive thru. There is a truck parked, blocking the lane, but not at the speaker. I blow my horn. Woman driving looks flustered. Pulls up and orders for an eternity. I order quickly and pull up to the back of this truck again. The cashier has the window closed and you can see that driver and passenger are looking for money. After another eternity, they find it. Finally pay cashier and get a small bag of food for all this time. I drive up, pay and leave with my food. I see the truck pulling into a parking spot. I didn't wait to see if they were going to eat in their car or if their order was wrong.

All I could think about was how this jerk was ruining BK's drive in times.

I couldn't agree more -- but let me add that there should also be a requirement of a week in retail. ;)

I used to say that, too, after I worked fast food! The world would be a nicer place, wouldn't it?

What I don't get is why these people think that a bunch of 19-year-olds are idiots because they work there. Hello! Don't we all start at the bottom? Well if you didn't, you should have!

Working retail was a cake walk compared to fast food. Of course, I worked at The Disney Store and not Wal Mart.
