I guess I take things in perspective. In New York City, in every last single fast food joint I have ever been to, whether Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, etc... the cashiers mumble something unintelligible and stare at you with something akin to utter hatred and complete disdain while you place your order. And then they bark at you to step aside and stand next to anywhere from 2-6 other people who just placed their order with said cashier and you have to wait.
90 seconds? 60 seconds? New York City doesn't have fast food. We have "stand there and wait because I damn well told you to and you won't get your food until I feel like getting off my rear and hand it to you and I don't care if it takes more than 10 minutes food."
Oh and better still, my favorite retort from a cashier, "Go ahead and tell the manager. He won't care either." Again with the glazed over, hate filled stare.
So I would LOVE to go to any of those "talkative" fast food joints you all have. And they can chat away! AND offer me an apple pie! AND I won't ask for any custom orders! Promise!
Soooo Very true....Since I practically live in New Jersey now (schools there, boyfriends there, friends are there....) and have for the past 5 years, I don't really see this a lot. But when I'm home...ooooh my...
I begin working in the mall here today, and I can't wait to have to deal with these people on a daily basis whenever I go to get lunch/dinner. What's worse is that half of these people, people who have to interact with other people every day, cannot speak english!!!!
We went to a McDonalds once, and after ordering, my mother said to a little girl who was next to us "you're ice cream cone looks good!". Our cashier proceeded to bring out two ice cream cones, and then yelled at my mother when she told her we did not order them! Her arguement was "you order! you order!" and she stared blankly at my mother when she replied "No, I was simply telling the little girl that hers looked good..." She then turned to the cashier next to her who said something in another language and they both started laughing

I realize immigrants need jobs, and I have nothing against that, but I really don't think they should be dealing in situations where it is neccessary that they understand English 100%, and can speak it as well.
