Do people mispronounce your last name?

Normally, they are just amazed by my surname because it's very unusual but they never mispronounce it.

The only people in the continental US who have ever said it correctly without my correcting them is the Polynesian staff who are actually Polynesian. I don't meet a lot of Polynesians here in OK, so it was nice to not have to correct someone for once. My last name is Samoan.

Yes. Even after I correct them they still butcher it. My italian name is just too hard for people here to pronounce, lol.

Theresa Brown. Fairly simple, right? :confused3

But I always have people ask me if there's an "e" at the end of Brown, and if there's an "h" in Theresa. So now I usually just say "Theresa with an "h", and Brown, spelled like the color brown".

All the time, OP. And I don't understand why. Mine is a 2-syllable name. Its vowel sound is followed by a double-consonant, then an ending vowel. I can never figure out why almost every single person makes that first vowel sound a looooong vowel sound. Just basic phonics rules tell us the double consonant causes a short preceding vowel sound.

Plus with the long vowel sound, the name just sounds yucky.

people mispronounced my maiden name and now they mispronounce my married name.

My married name has a "y" in it that has a long i sound. People insist on giving saying it with is short i sound though.

Oh well.....

Pretty much always. My name is very similar to yours - six letters, two syllables, two consonants in the middle, but not common. I've gotten assertive in my old age. While I try my best to make the spelling and pronunciation clear when I speak my last name, anybody who refuses to say it right after seeing it is just being inconsiderate, lazy, or disrespectful.

Yeah, really :teeth:

wow, while my last name is rarely mispronounced, my first name almost always is. As I have gotten older I have learned to go with the flow and just deal with it. While I did find it disrespectful that my inlaws always called my by the wrong name, other people I always give a pass to. I might be called by 4 or 5 different names within an hours time if I am at a gathering. If its anything close, I will answer to it.

Yes, all the time. And it's very easy- it's a popular drink just spelled differently. Then when I correct them, they ask me if I take milk and sugar in me... like I haven't heard that joke before. :rolleyes1

Yep, they do. It's 11 letters long with four syllables and very unusual. I used to get tired of having to pronounce it for people, but now I don't mind. Although I will say that I can't wait to marry my fiance and have a shorter and easier-for-other-people-to-pronouce last name, lol.

Yes, here also. It is a simple name but starts with "A" and people always use a hard "A" instead of a soft one or an ahh sound. I can understand the mistake though. Also get a lot of problems when trying to spell it. I guess with my "accent" it always sounds like I am saying "E" not "A".

I don't get many mispronounciations...... but my mother in law doesn't say it right and she has the same last name. She says Sne.. instead of Schn......

Yes, both first and married get mangled. Thing is, I think my DH's last name is super simple, but people always try to force foreign pronunciations on it. As a memory device, I use a famous street that shares most of the name and tell them "It's like that, just take the last three letters off!" Works every time.

My first name never was a problem where I grew up, but once I moved away, I get called the name that only family gets to used, a babyish nickname. I hate that...
