Do people mispronounce your last name?

All of the time. My madien name was a common name (Jones, Williams, Smith, etc).

I married and now have a french last name with silent letters and an e before i that is not after c.

We went to Brio once and they pronounced it right when DH gave them the credit card...... he got an extra dollar just for saying it right.

I always know when they get to me when I go places (dr, school, etc) because they say my first name and pause. I usually say that is probably me lol.

Yep all the time, it has a U as the second letter and it is pronounced short like cup and people say it like oo. My maided name wasn't any easier, I am so used to people not pronouncing my last name correctly.

Me too - a 2 part French last name that often appears as a first and last name - especially on junk mail. Somehow the "silent" letter is never silent.

Always.

It's not their fault, though, it's a Russian name and has no vowels at all.

Yes, because we share our last name with a famous person who uses the French pronunciation, so many people assume that is how we pronounce it.

The only time I use it is at Chefs de France!

Mine too! that darn U :rotfl:

Yup. I have an "sch" that is like shhh, but people want to make it like cha.

Yes, so often that I am surprised when someone actually gets it right.

same thing here! The first 5 letters of my maiden name were consonants, most people weren't even close to pronouncing it right. I was so happy when I married a guy with a nice short name. I thought it would by so much easier for people to get it right. Nope, they turn the long I into a short I sound and put an N on the end instead of an M. I'm so used to the wrong pronunciation that I didn't answer when someone called me by the correct pronunciation today lol.

My last name is also a common first name... many, many people mistakenly call me by my last name.

I'm getting married in October and my new last name will never be mistaken for a first name. It is spelled just like it sounds, but is butchered by most people. I especially love when my fiancé gets automated calls... the computer pronunciation cracks me up!

My last name sort of looks like a name of a wine so some say that word instead of really looking at my name

First name mispronounce... called everything other than my name..... Last name misspelled:headache:, even after I have corrected them and pointed it out over and over and over:mad:

In my case it's more like their intimidated by it (it's only 8 letters and sounds like it's spelled) and so I have to say it for them. It can get annoying. :D

Happens all the time with mine. There is an "st" in the middle and many folks reverse the t and s. It is just a two syllable name.

Pretty much always. My name is very similar to yours - six letters, two syllables, two consonants in the middle, but not common. I've gotten assertive in my old age. While I try my best to make the spelling and pronunciation clear when I speak my last name, anybody who refuses to say it right after seeing it is just being inconsiderate, lazy, or disrespectful.

Yeah, really :teeth:

My maiden name was Dinger - pronounced like singer but with a "d". Everyone always pronounced it like ginger or they wouldn't say it at all in school. It was always "Margaret - hesitate because I am not sure how to say this last name". :rotfl:

Then my first married name was another one that no one could pronounce or spell correctly. Now I have a very easy and common last name. I love it, no more mispronounciations. My DD still has to deal with the problem but like me she has gotten used to it.

I even get people spelling my first name wrong.

My last name is 14 letters long. It is pronounced exactly the way it is spelled, but people's eyes tend to glaze over before they reach the end. No one ever pronounces it correctly.

Yes! It ends with an "O" but everyone always changes it to an "I". I guess they think all Italian names sound alike.
