Do people ALWAYS spell your name wrong?

All my life, I have had to spell my name to people and most of the time when they see it spelled out, they say it wrong! :headache:

My maiden name is odd and no one has ever spelled it right. My last name now is very common, and yet it has to be spelled to.

I don't even bother saying my name actually, I just start spelling it.

Story. Of. My. Life. :furious:

It's extremely rare that I meet anyone that can read my name correctly and I honestly don't see how difficult it is either. It's Julina. Ju-li-na, pronounced the way it's spelled. It's not like it's spelled Joolenah or anything, in which case it's okay if you pronounce it wrong cause I'd understand that my mom is a cruel person set on making sure I have a difficult life. Here's how people spell and say my name all the time:

Julianna (First drivers license? RUINED.)
Julia (Why, sir? Why?)
Dulina (A volunteer filled out my form registered me to vote as Dulina. I only wish I could vote tomorrow.)
Julian. (Hi, not a guy?)
Yulina (As you can tell from my last name and face, not of Mexican-descent either.)

You can call me Jules. I don't mind really. However, if you call me Julie after I tell you repeatedly I hate it, I will kind of attack you with something.

Just remember this thread when you have children and you have the urge to name them something "unusual".

I guess I was a jaded child because I pretty much swore this to myself when I was in the third grade. :rotfl:

I forgot to add, in addition to strangers spelling my name wrong, around the holidays, my friends and family all seem to spell my name Christal :rotfl:

Yes, my first name gets misspelled all the time. My last name does, too. I usually just spell out first and last name to people. My maiden name occasionally got spelled wrong, too. :rolleyes1

Heck yeah and it's so annoying. My eldest DS gets his name spelt incorrectly all the time and it's not by aquaintances or someone he's just met or recently spoken to either.

Actually even my youngest DS has the same problem with the same person spelling his name incorrectly.

The person is my brother. My boys are now 18 and 19 and you'd think my brother would know how to spell their names by now.

Granted, up until a couple of years ago, he never really needed to know as our Mum wrote on all the birthday cards and Christmas gift tags. BUT.... I always put all our names on DB's birthday cards and Christmas gift tags.

Why is it so hard for people to open their eyes and read what is in front of them.

I've had it too, but not from my brother. He can spell my name. My problem is people who I've not met in person, but who have received some form of mail from me and everything I send has an address label attached. So, why do certain people still get it wrong, when it is quite clearly spelt out right in front of them on the address label.:confused3

Oh and my surname as simple as it is... some people are so amazing... they still can't spell it. It's actually also a boys Christian name and there really is only one way to spell it. Maiden name.. well that is another story... it was an uncommon name and would get spelt correctly most of the time, but mispronounced most of the time.:)

My grandfather lived his entire life with people spelling his name wrong (Sindel) until the day he died, literally! When he passed away, his name was spelled wrong on the heart monitor screen above his head at the hospital  (at that point, it was comical)

I think it made things worse that his brother's name is Alan :lmao:

He made everyone in our family promise to name our kids "good, solid, common names" because it was torturous to him to have such a weird name.

My first name is usually misspelled. It is Melanie not Melony. I was named after the Melanie in Gone With The Wind. I go by Mandy since my middle name is Amanda. And for some reason people want to spell it Mandi or Mandie why I have no clue. My oldest dd is Michaela and everybody wants to spell it Miklaya. But it is just like Dr Quinn. And my youngest dd is LeeAnn. How hard is that? It is just 2 names put together. It is not Leighann or Leeanne. Her teacher still doesn't spell it right. At least oldest dd's teacher gets the spelling right on hers. I wanted my kids to be diffrent so I spelled their their first names diffrent than normal. So when they are in therapy later and they blame their mother I guess they will be right. By the way the names I listed are their middle names.

Everyone always misspells my oldest dd's name. It's KELLEY, not Kelly, not Kelli, not Kellie, and not Kellye. Even DH's parents have misspelled it for the last 17 years! My youngest dd's name is Caroline. People spell it correctly but they just can't pronounce it correctly. She's always getting "Carolyn". It's CAROLINE not CAROLYN.

I didn't read all the responses (have to wait till I get to work to do that...did I just say that out loud???) But I had to responde. My name isn't that unusual (Tricia) but I am constantly seeing my name spelled Trisha. And what really kills me is when my name is in the email - both in my signature and my email address. I mainly get it when people are addressing me in person - I am constantly called Trish (which no offense I don't like) my family sometimes calls me that but that is different (can't tell my dad what to call me!!)

The worst was the time I worked in an operations center answering phones and I always said "This is Tricia speaking" well this guy called and said "ok Pat" I paused because I didn't know who he was talking to. So I asked him and he said he was talking to me!!! I never said anything about my name being Pat - it isn't even Patricia.

Some people just don't think!!

Heck they can't even pronounce my name, much less spell it:rotfl:
Aloah

After 25 years, my mother in law still can't spell my name correctly.

I can relate . . . my name is TIFANY, but I get spellings of TIFFANY, TIFFANIE, TYFANI, you can just imagine some of the spellings.

My name is ALWAYS spelled wrong. I don't mind anymore though, I just blame my mother and laugh.

I'm a Toni.

Trying to pay for my first semester of college through the *little window*. (EONS ago. I assume now it's all done online or in some non face-to-face way...LOL!)

Lady says "Name?"

Tell her my name.

"FULL name?"

That IS my full name.

"No, I mean your FULL NAME"

YES.....that IS my FULL NAME.

"What's your full FIRST name. What's it short for?"

THAT IS MY FULL FIRST NAME! IT'S NOT SHORT FOR ANYTHING!

"Are you sure?"

Seriously?!? I wonder about people sometimes!:sad2:

People always spell my name EliZabeth (instead of EliSabeth), but it doesn't really bother me. And I work with another gal named EliZabeth, so it's extra confusing for my co-workers.

PLUS we have a Tricia and a Trisha, a Jennifer and a Jenifer, a Cathy, a Kathy, and a Cathi, a Jody and a Jodi, a Kristen and a Kristin, a Cindy and a Cindi, and a Tracey and a Traci. It has become sort of a joke that nobody knows how to spell anybodys name at work anymore. We just write a name on the board and figure it out eventually.:rotfl:

That happens to DH all the time
his parents named him Danny
People try to explain to him "NO your name is Daniel"
....ah no its Danny
“Danny is short for Daniel”
….well not in this case

it

Don't you love it when people try to correct you on your own name. People would insist my name was Patricia. I was named after my grandmother but my mom didn't want me to be called Pat or Patty so she just named me Tricia.

Thought of another one that gets misspelled all the time - a lady I work with is Michele - not Michelle - she is the Michele with one L

LOL...yep DH is Tony and BILs are Danny and Lenny. No middle names either. They get people arguing with them all the time that their names are Anthony, Daniel, Leonard . I've heard people tell DH "we all hate our middle names, stop lying and tell it"
I had a neighbor "swear" to me that DH had to lying about his name, that no hospital would have let their mother name them "nick names" and not given them middle names. His name had to be Anthony and thats what she was going to call him, and she did.
