Do people actually make ruttabegas?

:crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2:
They are fairly popular here in the South--they are usually diced and boiled. But they are so gross! And they stink when you cook 'em.

Mentioned in a line of a musical I did (Into the Woods), but that's about it. It's a vegetable, right? Or no?

Yum, I like them. Taste like a cross of a Yukon Gold Potato and a sweet potato. I liked em steamed, or roasted with a bit of butter.

YES!!! They are great with pork. I like to peel them and cut them up to boil with a few potatoes. Then I mash them up just like you do when you make mashed potatoes with lots of salt and pepper. YUMMY. I usually make it with loin of pork, and then I fix some sort of green veggie, and applesauce. Man, I am getting hungry!

Yuck! My grandmother used to make me eat them when I was little. I still remember them and that was 30 years ago!

My Mom used to put them in the soup she would make with the turkey leftovers after Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'd don't think I've ever had them by themselves though.

My grandma used to add grated rutabega to her pasties (meat & potato turnovers).

I love them. My grandmother taught me to add a teaspoon of sugar to the pot to make them more favorful. My 3 kids haven't yet learned to love them!

If they taste like Tubokitty says I'll give 'em try. :) I don't think I have ever even seen one.

Hi,
Rutabaga dishes are very common in Scandinavian meals. :sunny:
Here's a recipe that combines rutabagas and potatoes:

ROTEMOS (Swedish Mashed Rutabagas/Potatoes}

2 cups cooked rutabagas, mashed
1 cup cooked potatoes, mashed
1/4 sweet cream
2-3 Table. Butter
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper

Cook Rutabagas & potatoes until tender; drain. Mash both the potatoes and rutabagas, separate, and then together, until light and fluffy. Add cream, salt, pepper and butter. Keep hot until ready to serve. :thumbsup2

Give rutabagas a try!
Sandy

Yep, Norwegian heritage here, and I LOVE rutebagas! It is especiallygood when it's creamed and sugared.

After reading the new post on the "do you read usernames wrong", I read this one as Ruta bets. I was thinking what the........ is she talking about.

It wasn't unitl People started referring to it as food that I realized what the heck I mis read.

I need more coffee.

I really like them cut up and roasted with olive oil, salt and pepper. When they are tender I puree them in the food processor with some cream and butter, and serve them topped with fried shallots. Yum!

I like them. They're really good roasted along with carrots and parsnips. They're also good in stews.

I like rutabagas. They serve them at the Norway pavilion at EPCOT, and they are yummy. But I always think of the Beverly Hillbillies episode where they were trying to find a sponsor for the Rutabaga Bowl football game. :rotfl:

I love mashed rutebegas with butter, salt and pepper! They're also good if you mix them in with mashed potatoes or cubed and put in soups or stews.

I've never had them and always thought they were a Northern thing.:)

Another Scandinavian checking in! Cube 'em, boil 'em, mash 'em. A little Finnish secret. After you mash them, put them in a casserole dish. Add salt, pepper, a little molasses, and some heavy cream. Mix together and put under the broiler until the top is a little brown. You won't make them any other way again!
