Do Not Disturb Gone! (BLT)

I don't care if they come into my room every day, but if I'm taking a nap or showering in the middle of the day when housekeeping is working the area, how can I stop them from knocking on the door without a Do Not Disturb sign?
Exactly. Years ago we went about a month after I had major surgery. I could only function with a two hour nap in the middle of the day while my husband and DD went to the pool. I couldn’t bolt the door in case they needed to get into the room while I slept. I got walked in on a couple of times. The first time I wasn’t wearing anything. It definitely took away from my ability to relax. And yes, I had the do not disturb sign up. Apparently there was a leak in the A/C which needed repairs. The sign meant nothing to them. They never did fix the A/C. We ended up with a wet rug by the end of the week at All Stars Music.

I just posted in the WL thread about this as this happened to me today. I ran the marathon this morning and apparently being able to shower and nap for three hours after paying Disney to run 26.2 miles was unacceptable. I had the sign up from sometime after noon, and because I had the latch on they knocked until I answered at 3:15. I was asleep at the time and they demanded access to clean the room. To say I’m unhappy is an understatement.

With the new room occupied sign.

The new room occupied sign does not seem to deter knocking nor entry ! NOT a happy camper here! We like our afternoon undisturbed naps and although I don't mind housekeeping stopping by daily, I DO want it to be on" my terms "not theirs (AKA Not when I am napping , bathing, or dressing!!)

They actually demanded to come in and clean the room?

I'm having a hard time picturing a cleaning lady demanding to come into my room while I'm telling them not now and expressing my great displeasure for them knocking on the door and disturbing me while the sign is up.

I'm really suprised if this is actually happening.

Well it did happen, and I got a profuse apology from management after I went and gave them some feedback. For the record, it wasn’t the cleaning lady herself, but her supervisor, who had a list of rooms in his hand to call upon. The man that came to the door said and I quote “you are obligated to give us access to service the room once a day”. The front desk tell me that this is an incorrect interpretation of the new rules (which they admitted they are having trouble implementing), and that he should have instead asked to do a security sweep (which he did not). At any rate, when you have let housekeeping in every day for a week, and only put the sign up for three hours to have a shower and nap in peace, only to have them bang on your door until you answer, it leaves a very bad taste in your mouth.

What the Front Desk told you is 100% accurate.

This is actually a genuine deal breaker for me.

Either interpretation of the new policy you mentioned doesn't work for me.

It is actually quite possible I've spent my last dollar at Disney. I'm hoping by the time I'm ready to book my next vacation they have had so much grief they back off this policy because if they don't I'm very likely done vacationing at Disney. And unlike some of you who will seek different lodging, but still go to Disney I mean I will not not step foot on their property. I will spend my money elsewhere.

I wonder what the managements response would have been when I told him the security sweep and knocking on the door weren't acceptable either.

I'd hate to be a Disney resort manager right now. They are going to be dealing with a lot of angry people.

You mean the ones that continually fall off and end up in the hallways? I have yet to see one sign on a door, they have all been laying on the ground. I know guests are not throwing them on the ground, so there is an issue with the size of the door hanger.

We have only had the new signs here for two days. I was downstairs to talk to someone pretty quickly this afternoon and had a good chat with the front desk (I presented it as feedback rather than a complaint as people tend to be more willing to listen). Despite the policy only being in place here two days, I was apparently not the first person to raise issues with the front desk about being interrupted by housekeeping with the sign up...

Disney is at the forefront, but the policy of checking rooms every day is likely to be implemented everywhere. What are you going to do?

Sorry this happened to you! I can't imagine the exhaustion after 26.2
Miles!!

3:15 is too early to "demand" entry. In my opinion, they should not knock at all, nor demand entry, when the sign is up if it can be avoided at all. I still think the 5-6:30 pm hours (or so) would be their best bet. Most people are not sleeping at that hour. Naps are usually finished. Even the littlest ones aren't usually in the bath yet, etc. most families would likely be out of the room for dinner or headed to dinner, etc. or at least awake. If they've come to the room throughout the day and not been able to knock/enter due to the sign being up, then during his timeframe the "demand", if this is soooo necessary, would hopefully be least disturbing. I sure some might be showering, etc but hopefully the latch could be used and they might need to wait a bit. And hopefully, by this time of day, they've already been able to access the room while the family has been out and about.

Now, of course, this would probably require them to alter their housekeepers work hours. But so be it if they insist on this!

I just googled the new Hilton policy and it states

"Hilton is joining other hotels in re-thinking the ubiquitous “Do Not Disturb” sign.
The McLean, Va.-based company is now suggesting that a team member alert a security or duty manager if a Do Not Disturb sign or light has been in place on a guestroom door for more than 24 consecutive hours."

So they're definitely not banging on doors after a few hours.
