I was thinking about this tonight.
To give the maid the benefit of the doubt she may have very well thought this was costume jewerly and paniced when the fuss started.
I mean how many people have an expensive ring with tape all over the back. Sorry, but if I was walking down the street and found a ring with tape on the back, the first thing I would think is that it's just someone's throw away jewerly.

. This is regardless of whether the maid stole it or innocently found it. If it had not been found filing a police report would have been prudent. I am sure the fiancee that proposed either has the receipt for the ring (no guarantee it would be accepted with a "Yes!") or is still paying for the ring through financing.
