Do I need to link MM BEFORE trip?

I just purchased MM. Do I need to link the MM to my reservation/ magic bands before the trip? Or do I just scan my magic band with the photographers and claim the pics when we get home? I am starting the trip with a character meal with extended family and I want to be sure to get those pics since that was part of my motivation for buying MM.
