There is a position opening that just came up within my office in which I have strong interest. There are only 5 staff members and my boss does know that I am interested. He has made some off the cuff remarks about me moving to that position but I do not really feel secure in the assumption that I will get this job.

Is it worth speaking to my boss directly soon (notice was given by the person yesterday) or should I give him a little time to work though the resignation?

I do not want to seem pushy (he does know I have interest; I have mentioned it in performance reviews) but I do not want to seem too reticent either.

I would like to know the process and what, if anything, is expected of me.

What would you do? What would you say?

Thanks! :)

I would be upfront with him about it. Tell him that you are intersted in the job. Actually tell him what you said in the OP. "I would like to know the process and what, if anything, is expected of me."
Don't lose the job because you were too afraid to speak up.

there is nothing to be gained by waiting, imho. you don't have to be pushy, just upfront. wvjules gave very good advice.

Can you make an appt., or set up an interview to formally apply for the position?

Do you know if they are going to do that?

I know that in DH's corp. they have to go thru the process which includes interviewing several people.

And frankly, nothing is a sure thing. Not sure exactly what you should do but good luck!:thumbsup2

If he positively knows that you are interested (from reviews, etc.) I would wait until officially posted, etc...

As a boss - I would love it if you came in and asked. I would also want you to explain why you think you are a good candidate for the job and why you think you'd be better than any any other candidate I could find in the open market. If appropriate, you could also discuss that you will help hire and train your replacement for your old position and how you will transition. I would love an employee that took this kind of initiative. You potentially would be solving a problem for them.

Thank you for this feedback. It is always nice to hear replies from management.

I did end up speaking with him this afternoon; I am not one to wait. I am definitely a go-getter at work but I did not want to put him off with looking pushy.

It turned out to be a great conversation; I reiterated that I was very interested and why I would be the perfect candidate for this position. (Including bottom line costs to our department, to be honest) and it is apparently in the works to move me over to the new position. I asked for feedback on the process and timeline and did receive some details on that.

It is always nice to hear this, however, I am a bottom line/"show me" kind of gal who needs to see it in writing and have it actually occur before I get too excited. BUT - I am tentatively excited. ;)

Hey, GOOD FOR YOU!

There was NOTHING to gain by waiting.

There was a job that opened up at my last company. I wanted the position SO much, I couldn't stand it. I told my boss I wanted it and why, and I made an appointment with him and the gal vacating the spot to see if I was a good fit, just like everyone else in the company who wanted the spot.

I showed up dressed for a job interview with copies of my resume and printed out "attagirls" from my current boss (yes, the one interviewing me) that highlighted my management skills. He was floored. I acted as if he didn't know me inside and out and presented my skills as an outsider. (He inherited me from a previous manager. He had NO idea I was that good at a job interview.) I seriously think I may have scared him and maybe I was TOO over-the-top.

I didn't get that job, but I did get a more advanced position with a huge raise.

Hey, congrats on the pending promotion! I agree, I would have done the same thing. Failure to do so may have incorrectly hinted that you were no longer interested and just trying to be low-key about it. Wouldn't want that. So...are you gonna celebrate with a WDW trip?! ;)

Hey, great idea! I may have to do that...once I for sure get the promotion! :)

Handbag lady - you sound like me! Not over the top, just very tenacious and prepared ;)

Well, I officially got the promotion this week! I am thrilled with the new challenge and honestly the new paycheck that comes with it!
I am definitely glad I did not wait to speak with my boss about the job and I just went for it.
I wanna celebrate tonight! :woohoo:

This is the first time I saw this thread, but CONGRATS to you - how exciting!!!

I too am waiting to hear about a possible interview for a promotion. Where I work, we have to take a test first. I know I passed with a good score, but I am competing against five other people. I believe the top three will get to interview. I need some serious pixiedust:. LOL!
