If you do/did put your baby to sleep with a bottle, do/did they have any problems because of it?

Absolutely not! That is right up there with don't put newborns on their belly. I am definetly not a PC mom but would never put my baby to bed with a bottle.

Do you mean put them in the crib with a bottle? My boys used to fall asleep with a bottle while I fed them, but they never took one to bed.

I never did with my son and I thought it was a big no-no. My SIL mentioned that she puts her son to bed with a bottle and I was a bit surprised. I think she would've gotten upset if I told her why she shouldn't do it. I didn't say anything, but I think I'm going to mention it to my mom and maybe she can say something to DB.

I had a friend who did it, wouldn't listen to anyone. I always heard it was bad for the baby's teeth, well my friend insisted she didn't care because her kid didn't have teeth.. But then after a while the kid wouldn't go to bed without the bottle. It took many many sleepless night to get her child to sleep without its bottle. She did admit after the fact...never again.

No, I never did that. I feel sorry for babies that get their bottle "propped", and not being cuddled in their mother's arms while they're having the bottle. I always held my children when I gave bottles to them. And I do the same with my grandchildren too.

No--but I have nursed them all until they are out like a light.

I had always heard it let to bad teeth as the milk can pool on their teeth if you put them to bed with a bottle.

I did give my kids a bottle but never propped up. Only when they could hold it themselves. Maybe 7 or 8 months.

My kids have had no problem with their teeth. Heck they don't want to fall out by themselves. All there teeth have grown behind the teeth coming in.

My kids are 12 and 9 now.

Never had cavities either....guess we were lucky. :confused3

Yes, I let my babies fall asleep when I nursed them and also with the bottle but I did not prop up or ever let them hold it on their own.

My kids have no problems with their teeth. :thumbsup2

Never!! I was such a nervous new mom, I would wait for my first born to fall asleep and let the pacifier drop from his mouth so I could remove it from the crib. We are talking newborn! I don't know WHAT I thought he was going to do with it!

I have seen what a bed time bottle feeder's teeth look like. A little boy in DS9's preschool had a huge cavity on each of his front teeth formed in the perfect shape of a bottle nipple. It was horrible.

I did this when they could hold the bottles themselves. I did make these bottles with a little more water than normal bottles. I completely took the bottle off of them by the time they were 18 months old.

DD14 and DD11 have perfect teeth no cavities, DS9 has two cavities but I think it is lack of brushing now, not from when he was a baby.

No, my 2 bio kids were nursed and my adopted son was bottle fed, but I never put him to bed with a bottle. My sil also gave all 3 of her kids a bottle when she put them down and her youngest had baby bottle rot in his teeth. It cost thousands to fix and they were all baby teeth that will/did fall out!:scared1:

I never put my son to bed with a bottle. I saw first hand what doing that would result in.

A friend of mine had a son that went to sleep with either milk or juice in his bottle and by the time he was 2 1/2 had six teeth removed because they were literally breaking off. When she told me about his teeth,I tried to gently get it through to her that bottles and sleepy time were not good and she actually said to me she had NEVER done that...as she was filling up his bottle(with straight juice) so he could lay down for his nap:sad2: To this day, the child has problems with his speech and cannot eat properly. We are still waiting for his adult teeth to come in.

#1 and #2 were given a bottle if they could hold it (but never propped and were weaned from bottle by age 1),#3 died before she was old enough, #4, #5, #6 were all nursed. They were all put on their tummies to sleep. They would range in age now from 30-11.

Well, sometimes that can't be helped-I only had 2 hands....

This is so funny because when DS17 was born you NEVER put your baby to bed on their back because they might choke by the time the twins were born you NEVER put them to bed on their stomach because of SIDS...

My kids never went to bed with a bottle. I was told to never "teach" them how to hold a bottle either as it is harder to take it away. My kids were mostly nursed but got bottles too. They were all off the bottle by a year though (and nursing).

My first did go to bed with a bottle. His teeth are beautiful. This was before it was discouraged. #2 son and then daughter did not.

Please don't put your baby to bed with a bottle. My DH is a pediatric dentist, and treats tons of kids with nursing bottle caries...while there may be anecdotes of "my kid did it and he turned out fine", trust me when I say there are millions of kids that go to the operating room to have all their rotten teeth cared for. The sugars in the milk literally bathe the teeth while they sleep. Would you want to go to bed like that? It's best to not put them to bed with any drink, but if you must, use water. It also makes it harder to potty train down the line, because they are used to drinking a lot before or while they sleep...then they pee a lot too!

I nursed my DD up until she was six months old so she didn't have a bottle before that point, but at some point she switched over to a bottle and used to go to bed with it. For that matter, as a toddler she used to want "bunny milk" (Nestle's Quik) so I used to give her (horrors) chocolate milk mixed with regular milk. Yeah, I know, bad mom....... she has had one small cavity ever and she wears a size 3 so it didn't hurt her weight either. She was never a binky baby - she gave that up on her own at 7 months - but she was a total bubba baby. Getting her to switch over to a cup took a long time. Her bottle was her comfort. Yet, here she is a normal, happy, healthy teenager no worse for the wear.
