Reading another thread got me to thinking. Do I have the only two children on the planet that don't drink milk? They are 13 and 11 and they pretty much never had it.

Youngest is allergic to milk but we always have rice milk in the house. I use it in potatoes, soups, baked goods, etc. but he doesn't drink it. He will drink a 32oz carton of chocolate rice milk maybe three times a year.

Oldest doesn't drink milk now and never has. She has never liked the taste of it. She does eat yogurt and cheese. She just tried chocolate almond milk for the first time and loved it so she might start drinking that.

Neither one of my kids eat cereal either so there isn't a need for milk.

Are my kids alone in this one?

My kids don't drink milk either.
almond milk in cereal, rice milk here for cooking, sometimes soymilk but not much.

we do have dairy milk in the house for hubby, he is a big cereal eater and is not interested in going off dairy.

so if we happen to be out of nut milks or rice milk, the kids will use dairy milk on their cereal.

but no you are not the only one

I don't do it because of allergies. I do it just to be dairy free.

DS drinks massive quantities of it but he drinks even more water. I never knew anyone who didn't drink milk except my mother. She hated it.

I never did as a child, could not digest it, and well back then there were not many alternatives.

Thankfully both my children drink it, and lots of it!!!!

I have done a lot of babysitting over the years, and it's very "in" to never give your children milk here. Many parents see milk as unhealthy, and soy as the wonderful thing. Many people I know believe milk can lead to breast cancer and obesity, and early puberty. So the message was you are a GOOD parent if your child never touches milk, and many I know follow this philosophy. When I babysat, it was almost the norm for babies to have soy formula, then when older to drink juice or water in cups and never touch actual milk. Most of theses kids would eat tons of cheese, ice cream, and especially yogurt though.

I personally love milk and get upset if we don't have any in the fridge!

We go through cereal and milk like crazy, but only recently have my girls (13 & 8) started drinking milk, and its minimal. I've never drank it...lol

My DS just turned one, I haven't started him on milk yet...I"m scared too... still afraid its too much for him, but dr says its ok at 12months :confused3

I am glad to see my kids aren't the only ones that don't drink it.

I am not anti-milk. DS is allergic. He has had two anaphylactic reactions to it so it is not just an intolerance.

I wouldn't care if DD drank it but she doesn't like it. However, if she did like it, I wouldn't want her to drink gallons of it. We try to subscribe to everything in moderation.

Both my kids DS9 and DD6 go thru milk like nobody's business. Almost 1/2 gallon per day. My niece and nephew barely a 1/2 gallon per week. Just depends on their tastes I guess.

Back in the 80s my sister and I were just about the only kids around who refused to drink milk.

We both just plain refused to drink the vile stuff :scared: (to this day I can't stand it). It was pretty much straight from **** milk to water for us :) .

I think we ate plenty of ice cream, cheese, yogurt, etc, but no plain milk.

To my knowledge, there's really no reason that kids "have to" drink it -- there are plenty of other sources of calcium and other vitamins/minerals.

I don't really understand why it somehow seems "obligatory" in a lot of places in the US? I have a lot of memories of being forced to take sips of the nasty stuff in elem. school b/c nobody could believe that we just didn't drink it

My kids are not big milk drinkers. They use milk on Cerel, & eats lots of Yogurt, String cheese & regular cheese. I have to have my milk super cold.

Kae

My kids live for milk. Has to be skim though or they won't drink it. We go through at least 3 gallons a week easily.

My DD 9 loves milk and even orders it when we're out and she could have the option of soda or something else. I, on the other hand, can't stand the stuff and never touch it.

My oldest didn't like it, but my younger two do. My oldest likes soy milk. Too bad she's allergic to soy. She makes do with rice milk when she needs a "milky" substance.

No, DS never has straight cow's milk, I almost never have it, and hubby continues to drink it sometimes, but knows he shouldn't. When he has dairy he snores SO badly! Oh it's awful. 2 days away from the dairy and he's much better. For me, it just makes me allergic to everything else. Heightens ye olde immune response to otherwise benign substances. And DS giggles at the idea of drinking milk from an udder, which is basically what you're doing.

The things in it that people think are healthy are *added* to it anyway. It's not like pasteurized cow's milk, without the supplements, has anything good going for it. Now raw milk is a different story, but most people are afraid of it, and most states make it really hard to get. :)

As for calcium, it's been known at least 20 years now that it takes more calcium from the body to digest the protein in the milk than the serving of milk has...so each glass of milk you drink depletes your body's calcium stores even more...is it any wonder our bones are falling apart?

Oh about the soy allergy thing...there's something about cow milk and soy that's similar, and people who are allergic to one are often allergic to the other. I personally can't stand soy (DS likes it though), and rice milk makes my mouth and throat itch, so I'm just outta luck. (though raw milk tastes rather good, once you get used to it! I'm so glad WA doesn't put lots of speedbumps in my way to get it when I want it)

My kids are huge milk drinkers.. HUGE We go thru A LOT of milk, I am not a milk drinker.... I wish I was. I've broken more bones than I care to admit. (I think the total is some where around 8 even had pins once... )

Mine drank breast milk and formula milk, but when I moved her onto cows milk she flatly refused it and hasn't had a drop since, except in cakes etc. She also used to eat loads of cheese but she won't touch that either, or butter. Yogurt is pretty much the only dairy I can get into her. I do worry about her bones, but she has other stuff that contains calcium and we're in a hard water area so I make her drink a lot of water.

My dd doesn't like milk. I'll have her try to drink some at least in the morning. She will drink choc. milk though. As for my ds - it's his favorite drink - he'll even have it with pasta, pizza, etc. I love it too.

My kids live for milk. Has to be skim though or they won't drink it. We go through at least 3 gallons a week easily.

My girls have drank skim since age 2. My MIL refuses to buy skim, even when they are staying with her--only whole milk at her house. Years ago, my 5 Y.O. refused to drink the milk because it was "thick milk" Poor thing ate her rice krispies dry. MIL still refused and told my DD that she shouldn't have to drink skim, and that was one of her mothers silly ideas.

I think DD drank a gallon of milk the first night at home after the week.

To the OP question. We go in spurts around here. Either a gallon lasts us over a week, or is gone in 2 days- weird .
