You may as well make your reservation as soon as you know your dates - there's really no reason to wait. But you could wait until that morning if you really wanted to.

Yes, you need to make a reservation.

Technically the rule requires a reservation prior to arriving at MCO. I understand the rule isn't being enforced.
Make a DME reservation when you book your resort. You can tell the CM your flights are pending. You can give the CM information for the flight you think you'll be taking.

An hour before is fine, if that's what you want to do. Though not sure why you wouldn't do it as soon as you have flights.
And you can even still have them get the bags. Yellow tags aren't required. If you want, go right to ME, check in, give them your claim check numbers (they'll load them in the computer) and they'll still get the bags and deliver them.

Why would you think a large percentage of people travel without checked luggage? I know that most airlines charge for checked luggage, but I know that personally I wouldn't want to do carry on only unless it was a short trip, like maybe 2 days. (I have no desire to do laundry on vacation.)

Yeah, if you've ever been to baggage claim you'd see that a large percentage of people do check bags. Smaller percentage do carry on only. Free bags are available from a variety of sources too

True, a Disney vacation with a family is a much different situation than the business trips I'm accustomed to. A larger percentage of leisure travelers probably check luggage.

My wife and I won't check a bag unless we're traveling for more than seven days. After a week, it becomes too difficult to pack everything we need. I do think that for people who travel with any semblance of regularity, a carry-on that can fit a week's worth of clothes is a must. There was a time in my professional life where I spent 150 nights a year on the road -- I couldn't abide by idea of wasting time at baggage claim. We're never at Disney for more than three or four days at a time, so we never check. We're taking a larger trip to Peru this winter. That'll be a different story.

(On a mostly unrelated note, I'm always surprised how much stuff people bring in vacation. But whatever works!)

Sure. I wasn't actually thinking about the financial component, though I'm sure that's a part of it. I was thinking more about the extra time checking luggage requires on both ends. Going without a checked bag can result in an extra hour or two of vacation time, and I consider that precious and valuable.

I can't fit what I feel I need for 4 days at Disney on a carry on size bag. Much less 7
That would mean limiting my clothing options in a manner that I'm not capable of. Not having choices leaves me all twitchy and sick at even the thought. Two outfits for each day plus spares are a must. Thankfully Disney means no time spent at baggage claim
