DME Checking carry on?

Okay, so we have our DME paperowrk. Woo hoo!

We plan to take some carry on luggage that is pretty big (but still under regulation). It will essentially have nothing in it (on the way there), but we are taking it for extra room for souvenirs, etc.

We don't really want to be dragging it around. I know you can have them stow it away for you under the bus. But, we'd prefer to just check it and not have to worry about it until we see it in the room.

Is there anyway to check carry on luggage with DME or are your only options to lug it with you or stow it away?

If you don't check it at the airport you leave from, then you have to handle it all the way to the hotel. If you check it at the departing airport, then DME takes care of it.

If you don't want to check it and carry it on the plane with you, your only option then is to check it in with Bell Services once you get to your airport.

Can you explain this process to me? Is bell services the counter near the DME area? We've never travelled DME before, so I am not really familiar with the layout/terminology?

I think the previous poster meant to check it with bell services when you reach your hotel. You can't hand it off to DME once you get to MCO so you either have to take it with you or check it at your departing airport.

Bell Services is at the hotel you are staying at. Some of them it is by where they let you off the DME bus at your resort, and others it is inside the lobby. If you are unsure of where it is at your resort just ask one of the cast members and they can point you in the right direction.

Once there you give the bell services cast members your luggage and they will fill out a claim check for you for the luggage. They will store it right there. When your room is ready you just call down to bell services and ask that your luggage be delivered and they will bring it to you shortly.

Yes I did mean hotel and not airport. Sorry for the confusion in my last post.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm sure that means that you would have to pay to check those bags? (I could see no other reason that you would carry it on) Have you checked to see if there is any way you can put the carry on INSIDE one of your checked bags, pack stuff in it and around it in the checked bags and still have room and be under weight?

Yes you would have to pay for the bags if you checked them, unless you are traveling on one of the few that don't charge for checked bags.

Exactly! We figured if they are within the allowed dimensions, why the heck pay a 2nd bag fee? But, as I said, we did not really want to lug them around everywhere either.

I guess for some reason I thought I had read that if you do not put your DME tags on it at your local airport, you can grab them from the carousel, and check them at the DME counter. So I thought maybe we could do the same with our carry on.

Your idea sounds like a plan, maybe. I might test it out and see how it goes.

Well you can grab them off the carousel and put them on the bus, but you are still going to have to keep them with you once you get to the resort, unless you check them with bell services once you get to the hotel.

You CANNOT check any bags at the DME counter. The luggage delivery is totally separate and far away from the DME counter. Anyone who doesn't put their tags on their luggage has to have the luggage stowed under the bus and they are responsible for it when they get to the resort. It can be left with bell (luggage) services until the room is ready.

I bolded one sentence, because it is not totally true.

If you don't put tags on your luggage and still want DME to take care of them, you have to give the details to the people at the DME counter (and your baggage claim tickets) and the luggage delivery people will pull the bags off of the carousel and deliver them to your room.

All non-US/Canadian travelers, for example, have to do this as WDW no longer ships tags to them.

It is only when you've taken the luggage off of the carousel, that you need to be responsible for them.

No, I understand that, but I could have sworn I read on here for like people who don't get their paperwork, or arrive late or things like that, that they can pick up their baggage at baggage claim, and that DME will check it for them. Maybe I misunderstood how it works.

Yes, you did misunderstand.

Read my post above yours (probably posted at the same time).

Yep, I'm sure you had read about forgetting to put the yellow tags on / not getting them in time. At that point DME would take your tag info and get the luggage for you, but again, that's only checked bags, not carry ons.

Here's hoping that you can make them fit inside and still be in weight. If not, it's not the end of the world, you will be going to your resort anyway, and maybe one person could be in line to check into the resort and the other person can leave the bags with bell services if you werent planning on going to your room upon arrival, even if it was ready, then you can collect them when you arrive or call the next day and have them bring them to your room (of course you will have tipping that is expected with all of this too)

Yes, you misunderstood how it works. THERE IS NO FACILITY AT/NEAR THE DME COUNTER FOR CHECKING IN LUGGAGE. Period.

If you check your luggage with tags, it is automatically pulled behind the scenes, sent to the sorting center, put on trucks, and delivered to your resort.

If you check your luggage without tags and present your claim checks and at the DME counter, a CM is dispatched to pull it from the luggage belt and send it to the sorting center, where it is sorted, put on trucks, and delivered to your resort.

If you check your luggage without DME tags and opt to not provide the CM with your claim checks, you must go to baggage claim and get your own luggage, then bring it to the counter and then the bus with you - where the driver will stow it under the bus and bring it to your resort with you; please note it is customary to tip the driver for handling your luggage.

If you have carry-on luggage too big to keep on the bus with you, the driver will stow it underneath and, again, tipping is customary when someone handles your luggage.

If you have carry-on luggage that will fit on the bus with you - on your lap, or extremely lightweight items that won't hurt anyone if they fall off the open shelves above the seats - you can bring those items on the bus with you.

Can you explain this process to me? Is bell services the counter near the DME area?
No. Magical Express is the counter near Bell Services/Luggage Assistance at the resorts. No, it's not semantics, or a technicality - Bell Services was first. But you can check your carry-on luggage with Bell Services/Luggage Assistance when you arrive at the resort (remembering, again, customary tipping).

No of course it would not be the end of the world. We can just take it on the bus, or if worse comes to worse, have it stowed away. The luggage we are looking to carry on are the rolling luggage types. Probably close to 50ish inches. (combined) I don't know if that will be impeding on the busride or not.

If it's a very full bus it will be, the seats arent that large to start with, and there really isnt any overhead storage. But again, no problem putting it under the bus at all. :thumbsup2

Any bag that is basically larger than a tote bag will have to go underneath the bus. You have to hold your bag in your lap, pretty much. Sounds like your bags will be larger carryon bags, so will go underneath the bus.

If someone arrives at MCO, but didn't put those yellow tags on their 'checked' bags, they can give their baggage claim receipts to the DME people at the checkin desk. They will send someone to the baggage claim area and they will get the bags and send them along to the resort. You can not do this with carryon bags..you have to keep them with you. You can not give those oversized carryon bags to the CM at DME and have them deliver them to your resort. That is not how the service is intended to operate.

You have two options....either check those empty bags (perhaps you can put some stuff in them) and then tag them with the yellow tags and have them delivered, or...keep them with you, as carryon bags, and have them stowed underneath your bus, and then leave them with Bell Services at your resort until your room is ready. But...tipping will be expected at both the bus and at Bell Services.
