Yes, we go out for dinner. No, we aren't hermits. But, I just realized, that my 1,700.00 dxdp is going to "really" be more like 2200.00 once i add in the 500.00 worth of tips from feeding disney adults at places like Akershus and Chef Mickeys! Lol! I guess possibly one more reason the dining plan isn't quite "worth it" seems we will do better with TIW!

Um... your tipping amount should generally be the same whether you pay cash, TiW, or DDP, assuming you're ordering the same things.

Not necessarily. With any dining plan, you order according to the plan. For my family, that would be at least three desserts we don't really want and four beverages (we prefer water). If you go to the DxDDP, that's probably also 2-3 apps we don't really want as well since we are four Disney adults. We obviously don't get any plan, but if we did (or even free with an upgrade), our tip amount definitely changes with the plan.

Tipping (except for large groups) is typically at the discretion of the tipper and in my eyes, should be based on the level/quality of service and not just 18-20% of the cost of the meal, particularly when the meal is over priced to begin with.

I am not a "Cheap" tipper, but a $36 tip for someone to get my drinks and take away empty plates (for 3 of us at CP @ ~ $60/person) seems a bit much anywhere else except Disney, especially when they are not exactly speedy. (don't get me wrong, most are pretty good, but we have had a couple of times where the service was sub-par. That's bad when it's literally getting drinks and removing plates. Oh yeah... and bringing the bill).

I like that TiW gives 20% off but then automatically adds 18%. Again, I am okay with tipping, but sometimes, even 18% is a bit much.

In my mind 5-10% is for sub-par service, 12-15% is for "AVERAGE" service, anything above that is for EXCEPTIONAL service. How busy a place is, is not a "Factor" to consider when the place is ALWAYS busy (such as it is at Disney). It's one thing when your local cracker barrel has an unusual rush (perhaps a Bus of tourists pulls in unexpectedly), but otherwise... they know it's busy... Plan for it.

That's Just my 18% on the topic. :D

Even though it is inculded in the plan if you do not order a drink or a dessert it would not add to the bill and thus you would not tip on items you did not want.

No doubt... and I agree with you. While I like the DP for the convenience (ONLY) it's more food then I want and in the end, it's not any cheaper for MOST people.

We had it once. Had more food then we ever wanted and even had credits left over because we do stuff outside of disney too. (Mostly Seaworld).

Why would you order desserts and beverages that you don't want?

Skip the dessert and stick with the water.

Exactly! That's why we don't buy any dining plan; it doesn't fit the way we eat. So even if free dining is an option, when deciding whether to upgrade to the regular or deluxe plan, figuring the tip cost DOES matter. Some will say the tips are the same paying OOP or with DDP. For MY family, that is not true, so including the cost of tips when determining that upgrade cost is important.

Only if you order according to the plan, rather than how you normally eat while on vacation.

When calculating the cost with a dining plan versus out of pocket, I calculate based on what we would order. That way the tip is the same.
