Hi everyone,

DF (I believe that's correct for Fiance?!) and I are heading to DLRP next week. :cool1: We're staying at SL for the first time after hearing NBH has taken a bit of a nose-dive in quality since the last time we were there, which is a shame because we absolutely loved it.

Anyhoo....I have a question that I can't seem to find the answer to regarding our room key. I seem to recall on a previous trip being able to use my hotel room key for purchases at the park. Am I dreaming? I can't see any reference to this anyway which is making me think perhaps I have my parks mixed up and am thinking about the key to the world card at WDW.

I am tossing up whether to bother getting a prepaid currency card or not (we're travelling from London, UK btw!). Ideally i'd like to put all of our expenses on the room, including in-park purchases and restaurants etc so I only get hit once with the exchange rate charge on checkout.

The more I'm typing this the more I'm thinking they totally don't operate this way at DLRP yet, but thought I'd throw it out there!

Does such a facility exist?????!

Not your room key but a paper 'passport' you are given which allows you to charge purchases to your room. You get this when you check in.

Have a fantastic time!

It does exist although I've only used on 2 occasions when I took the children on my own and rather than carrying a lot of cash around myself, anyway that was quite a few years ago.
It's your hotel ID pass that you use. When you check in you tell them that you want to use the ID card that way and you fill in the section for credit card details on the documentation there.
I believe they charge your card when your reach a certain amount and I'm thinking it's 500 euros, but hopefully someone who has used it more recently will have more information for you :)

No they don't have KTTW.

You can charge to the room but its a bit if paper they give you. Then your tickets, meal plan vouchers, and room key are all separate to that too!

Hopefully they'll eventually get on the RFID/MyMagic+ bandwagon.

Awesome news, thanks everyone. It's nice to know I haven't yet gone completely mad!

Does anyone know if there are any restrictions with the "paper passport" as in where you can and can't use it? I'm assuming it's good for both parks but curious if restaurants at DV will accept this also?

I'm still a little baffled that ALL Disney parks have not adapted the WDW practice of a do it all room key for those that patronize the resorts.

It's one of our favorite things about staying at WDW, not having to carry ID, credit cards, tickets and your room key when you are out an about in the Resort/Park.

Glad the question was asked, as I was curious about this too.

Most restaurants accept it in the Village, not sure about Planet Hollywood, King Ludwigs, Rainforest Cafe & Earl of Sandwich though.

Awesome! Thanks so much for the great info. I'll just take the hit with EoS as long as everywhere else we want to eat is covered, which it looks like it should be.

If we encounter any problems or exceptions to the above we'll be sure to post when we get back :thumbsup2

Thanks again everyone! :goodvibes

You can charge items from the DLP hotels, stores and restaurants in both parks and the village to your room via the hotel ID pass. You will need to register your debt or credit card at reception when you check in.

You can't charge meals from Planet Hollywood, King Ludwigs, Rainforest Cafe or Earl of Sandwich to your room as these restaurants are not operated by DLP.

KTTW was not introduced to DLP due to it's expense. It was considered a few years ago but the banks refused them permission to install the system. It was either a new telecoms and data system or a charging / room key system similar to KTTW and the bankers would not allow both.

Considering the KTTW system has now been superseded by MyMagic+ it was a wise decision and would have been a huge waste of money to install KTTW at DLP.

Disneyland Paris said recently at a shareholder's round table discussion that RFID is part of their long term plans. Don't expect it any time soon though as their Wi-Fi plans don't even extend to the parks yet.

The success of the trials and eventual roll out in WDW well no doubt determine of we get it on DLP.

I can see RFID being rolled out well before Wi-Fi in the parks. It will be quite easy and cost effective to install wi-fi in the hotels and village. But it would be a huge task to wi-fi up both parks. The technical and cost implications of wide area Wi-Fi will be very high, and I don't think it is worth it as most people have 3G phones and very shortly 4G phones making wi-fi in the park redundant even before it would be ever installed or switched on.

Except that 49% of guests can't use their 3G in the parks unless they're willing (I'm not) to rack up a roaming bill. Or what about people who have an iPod/iPad

Maybe I'm naive - but I also can't see how wifi-ing the parks would be that much harder or more expensive than doing the village?

it is the amount of the wireless access points they will need to cover both parks... to get a good signal everywhere they will needs lots of them...think about your wireless broadband at home and how small area it will cover... of course they would have use better router but still lots of them will be needed....

When 4G becomes standard roaming will become a thing of the past as all calls will be treated as data. The Village will be quite easy to wi-fi up, routers in each building and antennas on the buildings and one central hub site for the packet switching equipment.

The park on the other hand will be a challange. It would have to be divided up into small hot spot zones with the equipment hidden and installed in the show buildings. Then sent via fiber optic cable or microwaved to a central communications site in the park somewhere.

This is a Disney park after all, you just can't go around bolting antennas to the side of buildings and puting up ugly microwave masts all over the place. Everything will have to be hidden.

Put it this way, I'd love to be involed in the project to install wi-fi into the DLP parks the drawing up the telecommunications architecture would be great fun. Simultaneous packet switching of up to 80,000 conections, togther with IP release and connection, logging the MAC address of every user. It will be one huge DHCP client table.

Imagin everyone trying to post Facebook or upload a photo to to Instagram when Dreams! is on each night.

I'll have to keep an eye out in the trade press to see which telecoms company gets the contract.

WDW has started to roll out wi-fi but it does have it's issues due to so many guests trying to connect to it at the same time.
