DL tickets, transferable or not? Or what, lol!

If you purchase a Disneyland ticket and assign it to a Magicband linked to your account, only that person who that MB belongs too can use that ticket? Yes, no?

Or is it just better to purchase them and not assign the ticket at all, or not? Just curious. Thanks!
 
It's completely different from WDW. Rather than assign a MagicBand to a person, you're assigning a MagicBand to a ticket. The ticket is the priority.

When a ticket is used for the first time, they take a picture of the person using it. That picture is the only limitation. After you attach a MagicBand to a ticket, the person wearing the MagicBand has to be the person in the picture. It can be any MagicBand - you can assign and reassign them as much as you want.

As an example: at DLR, if you and your partner have MagicBands - you could theoretically swap bands with each other mid-day and reassign the tickets to match, and it'd work.

Why would Disney make it different at WDW versus DL?
Because they are two different "beasts." The population that visits WDW is much different from those who visit DLR. Easy examples:

WDW's guests are typically vacationers spending a chunk of time there (like 1-2 weeks, often). DLR's guests are typically more local-ish to the area, and don't spend nearly as many days (frequently 3-5 days). WDW'ers commonly plan their trip months to years ahead of time. DLR doesn't take that much pre-planning, so people often go after just a few months (if that!) of planning.

It's definitely a case of "what's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander."
 
It's really an issue of logistics more than anything else.

WDW spent a billion dollars implementing MyMagic+ (including MagicBand) in 2014, and could justify it because of the vast number of resort guests there - they were synching up the resort and theme park experiences. (Even then, there were questions for years as to whether they would actually recover the costs.)

DLR only has three resorts - they couldn't justify the expense. 95%+ of guests are day-ticket locals who wouldn't use the lion's share of the features. WDW was already moving into RFID admission as well - so implementing an RFID device (MagicBand) wasn't a major change. DLR never did that, and still uses ticket barcodes.

What you see at DLR is a patch. They wanted to implement the MB experiences (read: Galaxy's Edge) but couldn't justify the expense of upgrading the resort to RFID admission, so they used the app to bridge the two.

It's not the desirable solution, but it makes 100% sense financially.
