"Lots of good comparisons above, city vs. country, city vs. beach, day trip vs. relaxing & that's exactly it...they're different. If you're absolutely set on one type of trip or another (breakneck or relaxing, close or your preference/opinion is slanted towards one, then the other will never meet your satisfaction. IMO, they're both terrific & that's being 15 minutes from one & a day's worth of travel to the other. You just can't get a WDW vacation at DL, but you can't see as much in the same amount of time at WDW as you can at DL. If you're happy with one or the other & don't see the need to do the other, then to each his own, but IMO, you're missing the different experiences that each of them offers & it's all Disney!"
JR Disney Clan, this is probably the best write-up I have read about DL vs WDW. This is sooooo true. It's all a matter of personal family preference, and what is better for one family may not be better for another.
When my girls were young, the MK was THEE park to visit. They would have loved DL over the MK because, IMO, it has way more attractions for kids than the MK. But, now that my girls are grown, they dislike a lot of the MK rides (fantasyland rides/jungle cruise/tiki, etc.) and the MK is now their least favorite park. They are also now more into activities, dining, culture, etc., so their focus now is on the other parks, recreational activities, fine dining and resort hotels. We recently visited the DLR for the first time. I absolutely adored it, but since my clan doesn't enjoy the MK type of attractions, they didn't enjoy the DL park nearly as much as I did, but we all enjoyed DCA.
The point I am trying to make is that every family has different interests, likes and dislikes, and it is not that one resort is better than the other, it is just that one resort is preferred over the other based upon family interests and what each family is looking for in a vacation. I also think that nostalgia has a lot to do with it, too. If one was raised going to DL, they will have a deep bond with DL, and vise-versa. One resort will always feels more like "home".
I am glad I had an opportunity to visit both the DLR and DL Paris. It was refreshing going to new Disney parks and experiencing new things. I'm just glad that Disney has parks that offer different experiences so every family can pick and choose the park that best fits the needs of their family.
