(DW is watching Desperate Housewives at the moment, so I've got some free time :teeth: ).

That's why I'm on this board tonight. :teeth:

Don't understand crossing over after comments about staying loyal to their core fans. VH1 plays their video all the time now, and I not into their new sound. Seen the song on tv more than it is played on the radio so far.

This relative newbie just wants to jump in here and make a few points.

First of all, I hated what Natalie Maines said. I thought it was self-serving, and I thought it was totally designed to create as much publicity for the group as possible. Nothing more, nothing less. I don't particularly like the fact that she assumed that she was speaking for anyone other than herself, and I really don't appreciate the fact that I am now labelled a "redneck" because I like certain artists, and I happen to disagree with her. Whatever. I won't be listening to her anymore. However, I believe that she has the right to say whatever she feels, because this is America, and our military has fought and died to ensure those very rights.

Which brings me to my second point, which is that I have those same rights that Miss Maines has. I can say that I think she is an arrogant twit, because I have the same right to free speech that she has. She doesn't have more rights because she is an artist. And she doesn't have more right because her stand is perceived as being more "correct". I am not a bigot, a warmonger, an idiot, a redneck, a hatemonger, a sheep, a racist, or a right-wing whacko. I am simply a person who has an opinion, and a right to express that opinion. I wish no ill towards the Dixie Chicks, and I am appalled by anyone who takes their opinions to the point of threatening violence. Not all conservatives are like that. Some of us actually read newspapers, and watch news programs, and are capable of making decisions based on something other than what Toby Keith told us to think.

Just my 2 cents...

Very well said! :thumbsup2
Also, welcome to the forum!

I think it's about time that I started getting into the Dixie Chicks.

I think there latest statement will alienate even more of those who listened to them and pretty soon they might learn that it is best not to open their mouth.

It would be pretty naive to think the Dixie Chicks didn't know exactly what they were doing and saying.

They certainly earn my respect for not pandering to anyone that got upset enough at their comments to join a CD destroying party.

My guess is that they are building an even tighter fan base with their new album. People who never listened to them before will be buying their music.

wvrevy, you are one of, no scratch that, you are the biggest hypocrite on this board. Bar none.

And, bar none, your posts offer the least substance to political discussions because your complaints are always with the person speaking instead of their ideas.

I think you're absoultely right, they new exactly what they were saying. They just didn't anticipate the outcome they've received. They thought they would use their star power to promote their political view. As it turns out, not so much.

Many who never listened to them before may very well now, but I doubt it makes up for the hundreds of thousands who did listen to them and buy their CD's, but won't now.

Their outspoken political position has had an incredibly negative impact on concert and CD sales. Which just goes to show you, free speech isn't free!

Let's wait and see how their upcoming concert tour and CD do and then talk again. I'm guessing they'll sell lots and lots of tickets in their 43 city tour. And since they're "Not Ready to Make Nice" we may be talking more about their opinions and attitude. :teeth:

Of course they anticipated it...how could they not after the reaction they got? These artists are very deliberately building a new fan base. Yes, it may take them some time to reach the same numbers that they did before, and indeed they may never reach those numbers again. But on the flip side, they are making a hell of a lot of money doing what they love. And they remained true to themselves in the process. Free speech may not be "free" (very pithy) but in this case it's fairly profitable. Their continued success is just burning the people up who though a couple of CD burning parties would be the end of their career. They may even think that some negative comments on a message board will deter people from buying the new Dixie Chicks CD, but all they are doing is increasing their public exposure and making sure more people buy it. :)

They will make a ton of money, down from the five tons they would have made.

If that's what they want, good for them.

I don't think anyone thought burning CD's was going to drive them to ruin. If they did, they are fooling themselves. But making their own statement, and being true to their feelings? They've certainly accomplished that.

Yes, he did. At his concerts he would refer to Natalie Maines as "Saddam's Girlfriend" and flash Photo-shopped images of the two of them posed as a couple.

And of course the crowd would cheer and Keith would egg them on.

It certainly gave an endorsement to the anti-Dixie Chicks group, and more than a little implied that criticizing the President was tantamount to treason. As if not liking Bush = loving Saddam.

I really like Toby Keith's music, before the jingoistic, MOR crap he started turning out after "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue". He still has a lot of talent as a singer and a songwriter and it's a shame to see him waste it on this stuff.
I go to Toby concerts every year. He may have flashed that picture at some point, but not at any concert I saw.

Furthermore, Toby Keith is a card-carrying democrat and has been for years. He campaigned for a democrat governor in Oklahoma, for Pete's sake. There ARE democrats who support the war. I am one of many people who think that when we are attacked we should fight back. And we should win. I don't consider it a political issue, although I know many do.

I happen to be a GIANT Toby fan, and I always liked the Dixie Chicks, as well. Never much cared about them insulting him or his retorts.

I don't buy Dixie Chicks CDs anymore because I'm tired of being insulted by them. If they don't want to be in my car with Reba and Toby, fine. They've got it.

I definitely agree that we should fight back--although I believe it's best we fight back against those who attacked us. :sunny:

I am amazed that T. Keith is a democrat, whatever that means nowadays, anyway. ;)

I remember the big battle between the Dixie Chicks and Toby Keith (thought it was dumb then and still do now) but does anyone know why the Chicks put Reba in the same category? I don't remember her ever saying anything ...she is from Oklahoma as is Toby is that why they mentioned her?

Natalie Maines is a fat little troll who couldn't sing if her life depended on it.

The group is a flash in the pan that had their five minutes and they should just move to Canada with the Baldwins. :stir:

No clue. Don't keep up with celebrity crap. Only know about the whole TK/DC thing because I'm so crazy about Toby Keith.

I guess any attention is better than no attention at all.

I could care less what they think politically. But, to insult people who actually BUY their music is pretty stupid. I guess she'll be geting that smaller fan base after all. What is that saying? Be careful what you wish for...

Beatles or Dixie Chicks. That's a tough one.

I got both on my iPod - but I also think that both were right with their statements about Jesus and Bush ;)
