Resort Thread Disney's YACHT & BEACH CLUB Resorts

I hadn't thought about rolling duct tape onto a Sharpie pen! That's brilliant... Duct tape is especially useful for taking care of cranky children or other members of your traveling party. I don't know if there is a purse that would be big enough to fit all the duct tape that I would need for one of my family Disney trips.

I would like to suggest that when tying crabby people up with duct tape and hiding them in the room it's important to leave yet another note for Mousekeeping that tells them that the muffled whining they are hearing from behind the bathroom door is just an ipod that has been left on and it's playing the song of your people. Hopefully that will get them to move along a little faster when servicing the room. It can be awkward when the police have to come to free people from their punishments . :rolleyes1

~NinjaMom

I can see it now at the security checkpoints in the parks. "Please remove everything from your pockets, including duct tape and place it in the bin before walking through the metal detector". :magnify:

Captains Grille breakfast...yay or nay?
I know I see mixed reviews but breakfast at the captain grille is a favorite part of all of our trips. We never make reservations. We've enjoyed the buffet and ala cart items. It can be leisurely or quick. Our family has fond memories from eating there and will do so again on our next trip. *** we always are there during value season and we are not rope drop people. We enjoy a relaxed start to our morning. So take my experience thru that filter.

We loved the breakfast last April! I liked it that we were able to get in without a reservation.

So I made my reservation at BC without any special requests but now that I've learned about the full balcony vs standing balcony I would like to request a room with full. I don't see a way to do it online through MDE so I guess I'll call and see if they can help. Any tips for getting a room with balcony?

My favorite tip is to check-in online, and I *believe* that you have an option to add "full balcony" as a choice. If you don't want to check-in online, or the option isn't there, then call the main Disney number (1-407-WDisney), punch in your reservation number, etc., and ask the live representative to add it as a request.

This is step one. It is important, but not terribly solid unless you follow up with part 2.....

Part two is when you check-in. Politely ask the CM checking you in if your requests are noted on your reservation, and if in fact your requests were granted. If they were....GREAT! If not, go on to (politely) ask if there's a room available that meets your request. I can't imagine that any CM worth their salt wouldn't put you in a room with a balcony within the room category you booked if one is available. The other thing that might happen (and it happened on our last trip) is that you may be told that they can grant your request, but the room isn't clean yet. In August 2016, we waited in the lobby, and grabbed lunch at Beach Club Marketplace, and about 2.5 hours later, the exact kind of room we requested was ready.

Good luck!

I'm arriving today, first time staying at the Yacht Club. Outside of the parks, what are the must do's/cool things to do/eat within walking distance of the resort? I need the inside scoop on what's available in our downtime! Thanks in advance!
How exciting! In that area I like:
  • The free walking tour of the Boardwalk area (not only the Boardwalk Inn, although it starts there)
  • Captain's Grille restaurant for any meal
  • Jellyrolls dueling piano bar
  • Water taxis (boats) run between Epcot area resorts, Epcot, and DHS - this ride is fun in itself, not only as transportation
  • It's fun to visit Stormalong Bay area at least once, to look around if nothing else -- and it's all the more fun for those who are swimmers

Speaking of booking.... we did book our first ever Bounce Back! Our dates are a bit tentative, but currently we are booked 7/15-7/20 at BC (YC not available for those dates) in a GARDEN view!

:welcome: back!!!

I'll put your dates on the list- if you make changes you can let me know.

:woohoo:

Thanks also for your review and comments. May I add a link to your post on the review section on Page 1 (Post 16)?

I know which employee staircase your're talking about, I think. It was right past our original room. That would have been handy for those rooms. We tried that one first, but realized it was for employees. This other staircase is in the water side of the hotel, in the hallway that leads past the side of Cape May facing the pool (so not where you enter Cape May), on the way to Martha's Vineyard. It wasn't labeled on the first floor that I recall, but it did have a little carpeted alcove where the door was. There were some drinking fountains near it. It was great. We never used the elevators again. You do get a real waft of crab legs, though, when you open the door coming from upstairs!

We love using stairs whenever we can.

This is a great description, but can someone there now or going soon try to scope it out and take a picture?

A question for while we're stuck in the UK though... what else is in the goats cheese scrambled eggs at Cape May cafe?

I didn't see a description of the eggs on the restaurant menu on the DIS. I hate to send you somewhere else for an answer, but if you don't get a response here, you may want to post your question on the Restaurant board.

Plan on devoting some serious time to the pool, first off. If you can't get an adr at Beaches and Cream, the take out window is great for treats. You can order shakes and sundaes off the regular menu if they aren't too busy. (Normal take out menu is limited to scoops and a mick sink sundae.) The boardwalk games and performers are great during an evening stroll. We also stumbled on the Boardwalk outdoor movie set up on the lawn. This was a great setting, and a additional option to whatever YC has on offer for a movie.

My family had a mixed experience (12/2015). My lemon curd pancakes were amazing, but we had extremely slow service. We waited 30 minutes to be seated even though the restaurant was half empty. Then, each part of service was super slow. Although I would return to give it another try, for my DH it was one and done. I am not terribly fond of the decor, either. Kind of dark.

Good morning YC/BC experts! DH and I are currently booked at YC. I haven't found a YC discount, but did have a BC discount pop up for the same dates. We'd save about $400. We're going for the Darkside 1/2 Marathon. Is it worth it to switch to BC? We haven't stayed there, I always read that YC is quieter. I'm so bad a picking a place to stay (I also keep seeing AK discount which would really save some money but would put us off of the beaten path, DH liked being able to walk to EPCOT last year). Thanks for your opinions!

I would be happy staying at either resort, so for a $400 I would absolutely take the BC. The biggest disadvantage is that not all rooms have full balconies at the BC, but I have always been able to get a room that has one. Advantages of the BC are that the rooms have been refurbished and are beautiful and the YC is scheduled for room renovation work in 2017. BC is also closer to the Marketplace quick serve/gift shop.

We recently tried BC as former YC lovers. They really are very similar. The lobby was a bit louder, but the room was just as quiet as YC. We probably still prefer YC, but I would (and did on a Bounce Back) book BC if it comes up cheaper. I wonder if they are pushing BC over YC because of the room refurb going on at YC. In the past couple of years, YC was always more available than BC for the times we have booked, and that appears to have switched.

Can you sit on the swings on the beach to watch the fireworks? Or is the beach closed off after sunset, except for the area where they do the bonfire and movies on the beach?

I always love sitting on the swings at night just to "chill out" after busy days at the parks!

There were tons of us on the beach NYE, watching the fireworks, so it was definitely open after sunset that night.

Thank you! I was thinking about the renovations :) I don't know why I get so indecisive with rooms. I'm always afraid I'll pick wrong I guess.

It's funny, I couldn't find BC rooms last year, and this year it has flipped. Thanks so much for the comments. I was worried about quiet - although last year we were near a group of convention goers who were pretty wild :)

I forgot to add that another advantage of BC is that it is closer to the Marketplace. I amended my answer.

Thank you! I made the switch :) But if a Yacht Club room pops up I'll be confused again.

Thanks for your help - and I'm enjoying your trip report, too!
