Resort Thread Disney's PORT ORLEANS RIVERSIDE Resort

The rounded railing that you see in your pic allows an individual to grasp the railing, for safety. They painted it to blend in.

I can't see any reason why they would suddenly need a random ten-foot section of pipework handrail there, but not need it on the steeper slope alongside the actual bridge, nor on the pathways immediately to the right. It's just a brown metal eyesore replacing what used to be a perfectly pleasant hedge.

I did hear rumours of someone running a Surrey bike off a pathway and down a slope into the water, which might have been there - although Surrey bikes aren't allowed on the island in the first place, and there are so many other places you can more easily leave the path that it seems very odd to just put a section of ugly fencing there and nowhere else.

I'm aware of the need for accessibility/assistance handrails (they have added some alongside the entrance pathways to some of the accommodation buildings), but this one just seems so random! The designers at the Magic Kingdom seem to know how to juggle the need for sturdy handrails while minimising the impact on theming - for example, I noticed this added handrail on the exit ramp from Splash Mountain, which does not look out of place at all:

I just booked for a garden view. What request should I put in for having a room closest to the dining, main pool, and transportation?

Just request what you said - close to main building (which is where the food court is), main pool and transportation.

Hi all! I'm hoping to book our November 2016 stay at POR in the next day or so!! YAY! This is our first time staying on site and after much research I think this resort fits our family and budget best. I'm still trying to finalize what room category I want to book but had a couple of questions first.

1. I'm leaning towards booking a King room because it will be myself, my husband and my 2 kids (5 & 2) at time of travel because I think the King room will give us more room for a pack and play for my 2 year old (plus DH and I like the luxury of a King bed on vacation)! I know we will automatically be booked into the AB section since we will need the murphy bed for my 5 year old and from my understanding the AB section has no elevators. So, I would put in a request to be on ground level because we will have a stroller and it would be a pain to have to lug it up the stairs. I know this is only a request however so my question is if we did get 2nd floor, is there anywhere we would be able to store our stroller on the bottom floor or do we just have to carry it up and down?

2. How likely would it be if I booked a king bed and put in a request for a river view to have that request honored? And are all river view rooms typically not too far of a walk to buses or main buildings?

Thanks for the help!! Just trying to decide which items are more important so I can finalize what category to book under.

King Bed would work fine for you, and as you say would leave lots of space for a pack'n'play. Yes, you would be assigned to an Alligator Bayou room.

You could indeed request a River View, but there are only two AB/ground-floor/King/RiverView possibilities, 3821 and 2728, which might limit the possibilities of getting your request fulfilled. 2728 is in a Preferred building, and 3831 is a bit further round the riverbank and not quite as close to the main building or bus stop as some other rooms (see my floorplan maps for a better idea of locations of the King Bed rooms in AB).

And the disease is spreading... yet more intrusive vandalism on the other side of the island (by building 38), before and after:

Could they not have at least just mounted the new fugly handrails onto the existing wooden structure without requiring the scaffolding poles too? All the time, effort and craft that the designers lavished on creating a beautifully themed 'stone' and wood bridge, with the gorgeous wrought-iron lampposts and the cute horse-head bollard, and then someone comes along and thoughtlessly plonks anachronistic brown metal poles in front of it, instead of thinking of a more aesthetically pleasing, integrated solution.

I'm sorry, but Disney are better than this. Or at least they can be.

Sadly I'm sure we can blame guests for all these off-roading bumpers. Between damage control, insurance liability and the expansive size of WDW (cost), this is what it has come to .... :sad2:

Can someone tell me what kind of coffee maker (model #) is in the room at POR? Someone mentioned it uses a pod of some sort. I'm assuming these are not k-cup style. I'd like to bring our own coffee but want to make sure we're able to brew it and willing to buy the pods if I know what they are. Thanks!

They are Cuisinart 2-Cup brewers that use the round flat pods. They look like round Tea Bags.

That's absolutely horrible… whoever thought that was a good idea probably hates dole whips and misses Nescafé coffe.

Oh, I so agree. But something tells me that there is a mandate to do it this way. It seems out of character for WDW. But then again, I could be wrong. :)

In contrast, they are starting to add boundary fencing around the pool at FQ which fits in perfectly (well, pretty close to the rest of the wrought iron fencing there anyway). This is next to the Mardi Grogs seating area:

I do hope the new pool boundary fencing over at Riverside will be wooden slat and pile in order to match with the rest of the Ol' Man Island theming.

And on the subject of closures, the main bridge between the food court area and Ol' Man Island will be closed for the next three weeks or so (it's due to reopen approx 27 Feb) for relaying the wooden decking and replacing a structural support beam. It made sense to do this extra work during a quiet month while the pool was closed. However no extra metal-pole handrails as far as I know - so far, anyway!

Andre...I wrote you a few pages back thanking you for your work on that great website of yours! I got lost in the photos one day and I couldn't have been happier! :)

Thanks, yes I saw your post, thank you for the kind comments. I feel the same when I'm going through all the photos from my trips too - and I took them! :)

Just booked April 6-11 at POR. Is the pool supposed to reopen by then? Sorry if this has been covered already.

Thank you!

One of my bosses just got back from POR & when I asked him where he stayed he said in one of the mansion rooms with the scaffolding all up & the pool closed by it. I asked him if they complained & asked to be moved & he said no but his wife was going to write WDW. I was just floored that they got put in a room under construction out of all the rooms in POR. If it had been me I would have been right back up at the front desk immediately asking to be moved.

Lovely... I'm not sure I'd call Princess Half Marathon weekend quiet. I know a lot of people (including me) who are staying there for it.
