Resort Thread Disney's PORT ORLEANS FRENCH QUARTER Resort

I emailed the recreation folks at Port Orleans last night to see if I can get any more info on this, I'll post what I hear as soon as I get a reply.

All six of the POR pools are available to POFQ guests anyway, and in previous closures shuttle services have been provided to help out.

Correct, yes. In the food court.

Andre

Still hope the closure isn't true - we have a pool view room booked for early Feb. Don't really want to pay extra for a pool under construction view :(

Regarding the pool closure... Chances are the weather will be too cool for swimming anyway....

Wimps. :) More space for the hardy Brits and Canadians!

I can see the point about having paid for a Pool View though, I wouldn't be too happy to pay extra for a building site view!

I run 8 miles a week at least but had knee surgery recently . Why struggle when in pain. I'm tryin a scooter for the first and hopefully only time. I won't spend 6000 on a vaca to be in pain with my knees lol I need a sign inexperienced scooter, driver lol. Actually,im hoping buzzin round the resort nd over to riverside with he scooter will save me enough leg relief so. Can shop on my feet. No disney trip is fun without the shopping or us lol Is it hard to ride these things?

I've been reading the DisAbilities Threads on the DIS boards as I will be renting a scooter for the first time for my trip this December. They suggest practicing with a scooter at a mall or large store like Target or Walmart. In addition, you can practice around the resort when you get there.

There's a lot of suggestions and information in the stickies in that forum, especially the FAQ sticky.

We were in bldg 4 with garden view and pretty much right across from the movie. I can honestly say we never heard a peep from them or the movie itself.

I have had the same view and barely could hear anything from the movie unless we propped the door open (which we did). I am also not a deep sleeper and struggling falling asleep with too much noise. I did not have any problems.

I didn't have to have knee surgery but I have dislocated my left knee cap 2 times in the last 9 months. The first time I was at work and was off 8 weeks due to rehab and having no light duties to do at work. The second I wasn't off work due to having light duties to do but still did a bunch of rehab which just concluded on 10/27/2013. I was in training to run the Wine & Dine half marathon this weekend until the dislocations happened. I have been cleared to run the Wine & Dine but at a pretty tame pace. I've got my "robo" knee brace (big and bulky with hinges on both sides) to help keep me knee together and I'm hoping to finish before I get picked up by the "party" bus that picks up the not necessarily faster folks. :rotfl2: I've told my wife that I will be crossing the finish line on my own accord even if I have to crawl. :crutches: Needless to say I won't be breaking any land speed records this race.

On our trip just a couple of years ago due to a bee issue at POFQ we walked over to POR to use the pool a couple of days. Not that long a walk of course we are vets of the Jersey shore so walking 10 mins. to the pool without carrying beach chairs and beach towels is a good thing.Only carried our mugs and a drawstring bag with phone, Nooks, money for sodas/beer and KTTW card.

Oh I wouldn't mind the walk. We hit the beach all summer and do the same. But... The weather will be cool. The pools are heated. I just don't want to think about that walk back after getting out of the pool. Doesn't sound like a good time.

Awwww well be careful because knee surgery was no picnic. GL in the race. Pixie dust

I am locked in a battle of indecision.

I LOVE swimming and since I am Canadian the weather will not be an issue.

I wasn't looking forward to POFQ anyway, but I chose it because:

- CSR has no availability for my dates
- CBR only has double beds (may as well be value)
- POR (my favorite) only has garden view available
- I am too stingy for deluxe :P

I may take the financial hit and jump up to POR by paying extra or save myself the cash and downgrade to POP, which I've never done before.
I'm just feeling kind of blah about value as I had a bad experience at ASMU (during renovations and HOT weather)

I would suggest giving the Reservation Center a call and explain your problem. Say that you are not happy that the POFQ pool will be closed during your already-booked stay, but rather than cancel your booking you would be willing to switch to POR for the same price for a similar Standard View room - but that you don't want to upgrade your room category or pay extra. See if they can sort something out for you? Maybe ask to speak to a supervisor if the initial CM does not have the authority to make that sort of change?

I called just now and switched to POR. We were there last February (early Feb) and it was sunny and in the 80's. My kids loved swimming. Sure we could walk, I guess. This just seemed easier to switch. Heard great things about POR, so we are excited. Now, to stay in the mansions or alligator bayou?!

I've received confirmation that Disney will be running a free shuttle service between POFQ and POR while the POFQ pool is closed. The dates are tentatively 13 Jan - 28 Feb, but that could change slightly depending on how long the work eventually takes.

The hot tub will also be closed for some of the time, but not necessarily for the whole refurbishment period. The laundry and kids playground area will stay open, but the Mardi Grogs pool bar and the restrooms will be closed.

And on a related note, as from this month the POR and POFQ feature pools (i.e. Ol' Man Island and Doubloon Lagoon) now have extended lifeguard operating hours of 9am-11pm. However, outside of those times both pools (including the hot tubs) will be CLOSED and guests will not be allowed to use them.

Off-season (e.g. 5 January - 15 February 2014, but those dates are subject to change) the feature pool hours will be reduced to 9am-9pm.

The five POR quiet pools will remain available for swimming at any time outside of these hours, at your own risk of course, it's only the feature pools that will have restricted access.

Does anyone know if POFQ will offer discounts for the inconvenience of the pool and will fridges be installed by feb 2014? Our 1st Disney trip is planned for feb 2014. :)

If history is any indication, no discounts will be offered. All fridges have been replaced at POFQ.

Oh dear, wish the pools were open earlier than 9am ESP at FQ where there is only one pool. Thanks for all the updated info Andre- much appreciated!

They never give discounts for pool closures no matter where you stay.

The fridges have been installed at POFQ for a bit now.

too funny, when we checked in on 10/19 and asked about the fridges the CM told us they still "had a big shortage of fridges". Both of our rooms had new fridges. :rotfl: even at the resorts the CMs don't have up to date info.

My kids are going to be so bummed about the pool.... I'll have to call tonight and see if there is any chance the FD pin will work at Riverside preferred rooms. I'm thinking that's not likely! It felt so good to have the trip booked... I just hate that I'm going to have to start over from square one. I know we could just walk over to Riverside's pool, but I don't want to walk 10 minutes soaking wet in January. We're hearty... but that will not be fun!

You could bring your clothes with you to the POR pool and dry off and dress in the locker room before walking back to POFQ.
