Resort Thread Disney's PORT ORLEANS FRENCH QUARTER Resort

Hi I just planned our first WDW trip for me and my 10yr old DD. We are staying at POFQ. What do you think the best building to stay at would be and how do I request the specific building?
So excited to go to Disney in February 2014

There are so many variables that come into play with the "best building" question.. :) Do you want to be close to the pool, food court, bus stop area or do you not mind walking the 5-8 minutes to them? Do you want to be close to the boat to DTD, etc..? I can not speak about families as it is just my wife and I. We like building 7 which may seem funny but it's a short walk to POR and a short walk to the bus stop, pool (hot tub for us), food court. POFQ is one of/if not the smallest resorts at WDW. At a leisurely pace you can make it anywhere at the resort in 5-8 minutes. Not bad considering other resorts we have stayed at those same walks took between 10-15 minutes.

You can fax your requests to the resort. The fax # is on this thread at the beginning I believe. When we booked our vacation that is 4 days away we just asked for a King Bed room which we were granted since it is just two of us. I'm sure they will try and fill your requests if possible though.

Can anyone confirm the rehab posting on wdwinfo.com that says Doubloon Lagoon is closed for January until Feb. 28, 2014?

We're booked there Feb. 21 - March 1....bummer.

I didn't realize that the pool was going to be closed! I'm a TA and I just looked on the Disney Travel Agent site after seeing your post. Sure enough, it will be refurbished from 1/13/14-2/28/14. That stinks for us too since we are going to be staying from 2/14-2/18. My kids were really looking forward to the pool, especially the slide.

Is there any chance the pool would reopen early since feb. school vacation week is in there (president's day?)
Andre, have you heard anything?

Also, if there is no pool, can we use other resort pools? (Or is it limited to POR) If we took the boat to POR, can someone show us the location of the pool from there?

Oh no. This is awful news. That's what my DS loves most about any resort. I may have to try and change resorts. This is so sad. :(.

Keep in mind you can go to POR pool...

One plus of Port Orleans is that the two resorts are one resort in some ways. You may, as mommajo pointed out, use the pool at POR and it is a nice pool. It is very close and I believe there is transportation between the two resorts. Hopefully it will work out for you. Or you could move to POR or another resort. Whatever meets your needs best! I hope it works out alll right.

We stayed at POR last time and loved it. Admittedly the only reason for going with POFQ this time is the size. We were very lucky with a great location last time and I was worried we wouldn't get so lucky this time. DS just loved the pool. I really don't want to switch. I had forgotten about being able to hop between the two resorts. I'm thinking that might be ok. I'm not going to lie... I'm disappointed.. But I really don't want to switch. It's something to think about.

Does anyone know if the replacement fridges are the same size as the old ones? Will they still hold a gallon of milk?

don't know the size of the old ones, but the new ones hold a gallon of milk. We were there 10/19-26 and both rooms had new fridges. We did have to take one of the racks out.

I would also venture to suggest that if you like everything else about POFQ, I wouldn't switch resorts based on the pool.

Swimming in February is pretty iffy. Unless you are Canadian :lmao: We don't even really swim in March.

I have 9 year old daughters, and I think that you'll be happy in any building. As I mentioned, I doubt you'll be swimming much. If it's worth it to you, the river view rooms are really pretty, but I wouldn't pay for the garden or water view rooms.

See... We swam in March quite a bit. I wish POFQ at least had quiet pools. I'm just thinking if the weather is cooler it might just be too much to go over to POR to swim. Ugh. I don't know what to do. I was soooo looking forward to our stay at POFQ.

Great! Thank you for the quick response :)

On our trip just a couple of years ago due to a bee issue at POFQ we walked over to POR to use the pool a couple of days. Not that long a walk of course we are vets of the Jersey shore so walking 10 mins. to the pool without carrying beach chairs and beach towels is a good thing.Only carried our mugs and a drawstring bag with phone, Nooks, money for sodas/beer and KTTW card.

Ugh! Pool closed? This is not what I wanted to hear. We have gone swimming in January, mid day some trips can be upper 70s to low 80s. But mostly we enjoy a mid day break around the pool deck, lounging and enjoying the sunshine. And the hot tub.

Does anyone know if the hot tub will still be open? So sad. May switch to POR.

Our first ever WDW is crazy week (Dec. 28-Jan. 2) and we are staying at POFQ. I'd like to visit some of the other resorts to see the Christmas decorations/displays. Which resorts would you recommend we try to see, and what are the transportation options to them from POFQ? (We will have our car, also.)

Also, I understand there is a communal microwave we can use to heat up leftovers, snacks, etc?

GF, WL, Poly and CR should be checked out and are all on the monorail. BC, YC and BWI are nice at Xmas too and are walking distance from Epcot. There is no direct transportation from POR to any other resorts, so either your car or you can check the monorail resorts on a day you visit MK. And then for the Epcot area resorts use your car or walk over there on an Epcot day.

Yup.

Would the room assignors ever "downgrade" you in order to meet requests. I know this sounds weird, but we paid for garden view since that is what was available with our FD pin. We would really prefer bldg. 4, on the parking lot side. Could we state that on a room request? My Dad really would like bldg. 4 since he has mobility issues... but we all would prefer to not have the movies going outside of our room.

We were in bldg 4 with garden view and pretty much right across from the movie. I can honestly say we never heard a peep from them or the movie itself.

Definitely rent from offsite company as the walk from the bus to the Scooters is very loooong. I rent from Apple and have been very pleased with their service.

I run 8 miles a week at least but had knee surgery recently . Why struggle when in pain. I'm tryin a scooter for the first and hopefully only time. I won't spend 6000 on a vaca to be in pain with my knees lol I need a sign inexperienced scooter, driver lol. Actually,im hoping buzzin round the resort nd over to riverside with he scooter will save me enough leg relief so. Can shop on my feet. No disney trip is fun without the shopping or us lol Is it hard to ride these things?

I emailed the recreation folks at Port Orleans last night to see if I can get any more info on this, I'll post what I hear as soon as I get a reply.

All six of the POR pools are available to POFQ guests anyway, and in previous closures shuttle services have been provided to help out.

Correct, yes. In the food court.
