Disney's Long Term DVC Strategy

The magic band is also great on the Disney cruise. I love being able to use it to go in my room and charge all my stuff on it. I see it as useful, but I never jumped on the craze of buying a bunch of them and could care less about it lighting up or interacting with them. I do think for the price it should do more, what that is i dont know, I'll probably pick up a DVC one one day and then im good until it does more 😀

I think just telling the time would be a great addition to the MagicBand+.

I use and old MB for trips to the pool just to get back in the room since I usually don't bring my phone most times.

The Apple Watch made Magic Bands somewhat outdated. The only practical use of Magic Bands is for kids who don't have a smartphone/smartwatch yet.

Apple Watches start at $250, and have tons of other features that make it worthwhile outside of Disney. Aside from novelty, it makes it hard for an adult to justify spending $50+ on a Magic Band which can only be used a few times out of the year.

That's why Disney treats Magic Bands as either:
  1. A kiddy toy
  2. A novelty to extract money from diehard fans
I don't see how Disney can mainstream Magic Bands without making their own smartwatch. A Disney collaboration with Apple/Samsung would be fun, but that's a lot of risk/effort for something that most people won't be interested in.

Apple Watch does not yet work to open room door. Though so it’s why I also where my MB

You are pretty much reminded every time you go that you are resale in some form (no discount, lounges, dvc rep treatment etc) and it is annoying.

The one bedrooms, which is what we want, are so expensive to rent out and then selling points there are tax implications and not having control of the reservation is not ideal.

I tried so hard to find ways to work around it and while possible its just not ideal for many different reasons.

I truly think it would benefit them to offer a one time stay and a timeshare presentation or some other trade off would be fair, they could highlight what makes direct appealing
To be honest it makes perfect sense for Disney to only reward and recognize direct members. Disney makes nothing off resale and only has to put in work to process the transfers for a small estoppel fee. There is nothing wrong with being resale, you just have to come to terms with you saved a ton of money to not get the perks or recognition, which in its self is very rewarding.

I think of it like this... you buy a used car you dont get the warranty and maintenance that would on that same car new. You walk into a car lot looking for a used car the new car salesman isn't going to feel the need to wow you he will just send you over to the used car salesman (resale brokers)

Oh I totally agree, I've never actually tried to use the DVC discount, just giving examples of one of the ways it sucks and I've seen others try to do it and being turned away and not too happy about it.

Some people were saying they think resale should get some kind of perk and im saying I dont think that will ever happen just by the way they've made it clear that resale isn't entitled to the same things as direct, which is their prerogative.

I've gone thru my head several times about the benefits of resale vs direct. I've thought to myself if Disney marketed things differently (Being direct means 50% off and 100 free points instead of treats or events if you're in the park that I believe that more people would be running towards that) EXCEPT for the fact that they block out resorts which changes the game.

Now you're thinking that you need to secure at least one direct contract for the future.

But then I go back to I dont know how long I want to have this and I will lose half my money selling it. Im already fed up with MS which isn't exactly making me happy that I've spent so much to be a member, im already a little sour and im a new member isnt a good sign.

When businesses interact with me poorly in everyday life i stop giving them business. Here im more stuck. But anyways, my opinion of what I should do changes all the time and TODAY has me thinking wait until LSL and see if you like it and if its restricted. That opinion could ofc change tomorrow 🤣🤣

I'm not sure what is going on with MS but I'm sure it will turn around.

BTW if you do end up selling we will be sad to see you go but if you do I hope you have a January use year.
I hear those contracts sell for a premium

how would you charge a meal using your Apple Watch?

I imagine you'd have to give it to your server unlocked, hope they don't accidentally lock it...

oh, and you'd also have to trust them not to go through your messages, inadvertently make a phone call, etc.

I'm hoping to find a way to go all magic band on our next trip... it's also nice to see DVC or Mickey or whatever rather than the time... makes you feel like you're more on vacation time...

Oh, and nobody can reach you on a MB... That's worth something too! Helps make vacation time more special and less interrupted.

Have they been rude to you too? I hope they chill, that's why I keep just sending Disney the conversations I have with them so they can see that im not just complaining or being rude on my part 🤣

Def not going anywhere for now, im obsessed as you can tell 🤣 and im just getting started! They're just not motivating me really to buy direct from them 🤣🤣 I think i just need a break from MS lol I dont have a need to contact them anymore, my reservations are set, so thats good!

I think what may end up happening for us is after we stay at Riviera and Poly this year if we love one, God hopefully not both 🤣🤣 we may end up offloading BLT resale and switching it for one of those. Which is going to make me REALLY sad but out of our three contracts, it makes the most sense.

SSR has so many points for the same price as BLT I dont want to let that sleep away gem go 🤣🤣 My wife loves akv and its only fair she gets one that she really likes and I do too. Plus club level is something were interested in. BLT is fairly easy to get into with the room type we want.

I really need to see how far the amount of points we have gets us and if it meets our needs. If we need more points then it may be worth it to consider just adding another one 🤣🤣

For me they havent been rude, actually very very nice just incompetent on many occasions.

My experience has been competent with a side of rude 🤣🤣

Like here you go b*tch (not literally) and then logging off before I get the chance to say thank you or ask anything more 🤣🤣

I’m surprised because in all the years I have been DVC, never had a rude CM from MS!!

Hopefully your luck turns around!!!

Disney makes plenty of money off resale members. 12% of your annual dues goes towards a management fee. Since your dues pay all of the operating expenses of the resort, the management fee is basically profit for Disney.

Technically those points that were already sold dues would either continued to be paid by previous owner or go into foreclosure in which Disney either gets it back and resells it at large profit or it goes to auction and the dues get paid. So resale isn’t a win for Disney.

The management fee is what is used to manage the program for us. It pays the cost of MS, membership accounting and part of membership administration.

It pays for running the website, etc and all the elements of DVC.

The operating experiences are for running the actual resorts so the management of the program is in addition to that.

Just want to clarify so people don’t think that operating expenses are what pay for the DVC side of things.

So, a resale owner does not pay anything toward the funds that DVD uses to pay for all the membership extras.

Those strictly come out of the marketing budget of DVD, which is funded off of direct sales.

I think about this too like well if the original member was dvc y and they were giving them benefits then what's the difference of them giving it to the resale purchaser, hence where I think people including myself see it as resale being "punished." But yeah its their right to do that so it is what it is.
