I'm on the fence between the POR and the CR garden view room. I can't afford the tower room and I'm worried about looking out at a parking lot. I know your not in your room alot, but, that doesn't seem to much of a vacation feel to look out at cars. I'm worried about the size of the room at POR. My dh and I are not huge but were not little either. I have 3 sons, my 10 year old is about a foot shorter than me. I also have a 7 year old and a 4 year old. I know both resort have their plus and minuses. I think POR has a more "resort feel" and the CR is more of a "sleek modern hotel". I have an AP and I hope there will be some good rates for Easter 2008 week.

Any help from the experts would be great!

I would pick CR. I think I remember on a Disney travel special that the CR rooms (along with some older Poly rooms) are the largest sized rooms outside of suites on Disney. The wing rooms are the same size as the tower - we have been in both. As for the sleek look , it is great! We love the Disney magic of the monorail going right through the hotel.

As a previous post mentioned the garden view is very nice. We had a balcony and a beautiful view. With five of you, I think you will like CR and the close proximity to MK! especially with a tired 4 year old ;) :goodvibes

All I can say is monorail, monorail, monorail!! It makes getting from place to place sooo easy!

Hello, LeahA!
We just got back from 8 nights at the CR. It was our first experience there. We've never stayed at POR (which I understand from friends is quite nice). I must tell you that the CR is a FABULOUS resort for families with children your age. We stayed in the tower, but I did venture over to the Garden wing to do laundry. It was really nice (for some reason I expected it to feel less resort-y than the rest of CR). Everything looked clean and new. The space between doors was very large, so the rooms must be ample! It is a very quick minute's walk to the main tower from the building. I also used the middle door facing the pool a few times, as my family was enjoying the pool and pool snack bar while I was doing our laundry. ;) The pool is really great and it's fun to look out onto Bay Lake. You can watch the electrical water pageant at night, too.

Right now, the fast counter service food option in the main tower is my main complaint with the resort. It's a temporary set-up while the construction is completed. Being in a garden wing room makes you closer to the pool's snack bar grill which has better hot food options than the "Tempo Grab N Go", IMO. (The GnG just had reheated greasy pizza and soup/chili).

The CR is very appealing to kids. My kids absolutely LOVED the game room. We spent many afternoon hours there, during our midday breaks from the parks. It's really fun. The pin station (if your boys trade/collect pins) is one of the best. Chef Mickey's is a very kid-oriented restaurant. We celebrated a birthday at the California Grill (simply amazing food) and watched fireworks from the CR roof that night.

The number one reason I'd recommend the CR is its location on the monorail line and near the MK. We absolutely loved the convenience. We walked to the MK in the mornings (under 10 minutes with our 4-year-old dragging and dawdling LOL) and we'd ride the monorail home. It's the first stop, which is wonderful when you're tired and worn out! The bus stop to MGM, DTD, and AK is just outside the front door of the main building. It would be very close for you if you stay in the Garden Wing. We experienced excellent bus service this trip-- we never waited longer than 8-10 min. for a bus to arrive to the CR. If you're heading to Epcot, the monorail is awesome, too!

Have a great trip and good luck with your decision!:goodvibes

We are staying in the Wing this trip and specifically asked for the Standard View, a pretty substantial saving over the garden view. The standard view is usually shrubbary/landscaping, not exactly parking lot, if you know what I mean. I had to call a few times to GET the standard view, the didn't want to book it for me! The benefits for us of CR is definately location! Also the larger rooms are very nice. I love the decor of CR. We feel cramped into the Moderate rooms with only three people. And in general, I never stay at hotels with full size beds when I travel, we always look for hotels with queen beds, and I don't want to make an exception at Disney. Sleeping stuffed into a full size bed isn't much of a vacation for me, it actually is lots of nights where I don't sleep well, no fun!

Let us know what you decide!

I would go with CR garden view. We stayed there is September and to be quite honest with you I wouldn't spend the extra $$$$$ to stay in the tower. We loved the garden wing, it was just awesome and still very very close to everything. We were a 30 second walk to the pool area and about 1 minute to the inside of the tower....how bad can that be?

Having the monorail etc. so close is just great!!!!

Can you tell me if the pool's snack bar (which is called the Sand Bar incase anyone did not know that) was selling either the Contemporary mugs or the YOAMD mugs which guests could refill there? Way back in January 2000 when the Food & Fun Center was closed for a minor renovation they sold the mugs at the Sand Bar, so I have been wondering with the Food & Fun Center now closed if they are doing that again?

tinknsnow,
Wow, thanks for your review. We are leaving in forty days and i'm getting excited reading about CR. We are also staying in a GV of the wing...looking forward to it.

I am sorry to hear this. We always loved the Food & Fun for a quick bite. How is the morning menu? We are going in March and I am pretty sure that this will still be operating then. Hoping to get our bagels, muffins, pancakes, etc.

Here is a link to information on the renovation of the Contemporary from Allearsnet.com and you will see pictures of the Tempo Grab & Go location on the 4th floor, with a picture of the menu saying what foods they sell there. http://www.allearsnet.com/blogs/jackspence/2007/09/contemporary_resort_updates.html

Thanks so much for all the wonderful advice. I'll let you know what I decide!

Does anyone have an idea of what the CR is going to look next Dec. 2008? I'm wonder how far along the construction of the new building is going to be. Any opinions would be appreciated!

The projected completion date for the DVC Tower is mid to late 2009. The refurbs in the original tower should be just about finished by 12/08. The big question is when does "The Wave" open? Disney's original schedule had The Wave opening in April 2008. As they have not yet started the rehab of the food & fund center to The Wave, this opening date may not happen. They can't start construction of Chef Mickey's Express (replacement for Concourse Steakhouse) until The Wave is open.

My guess is all the renovation inside will be finished by then, or it will just about be done.

Is the door dividing the toilet from the sinks a regular swinging door or a sliding door? I am wondering because I am thinking of buying an over the door organizer for our toiletries and this idea won't work if it's a sliding door. Thank you.

Here are some pics of the construction on the 4th floor. These were taken from the 6th floor.

Great pictures! Was your room one of the "MK view" rooms (I mean obviously it gave you a view of the MK)? What room number were you in? We are looking to book for Feb. Would like to watch Wishes from our room!
