Disney's $1 billion dollar bet on magical wristband - Wired

Yeah, they come from Disney. Is that a problem?
Well based on posts on these boards there has been a good amount of negative feed back. Disney is never going to say it's had a negative backfire because that's bad PR. They just kept calling it a test.

Lied? No. Engaged in spin? Absolutely.

I don't think there's a way to spin this. They said people love it. I suppose that you could do the whole 50%+ people like it. Still I think you're saying they essentially lied.

The boards on here are very representative of the masses.

So you think it's a slam dunk success here on the boards? I'm curious why I haven't seen you posting on the theme parks board.

I don't think they lied. But if the survey asks how much you loved it, and doesn't give an option that allows for disliking it, you can sort of see where that gets you.

I don't think they lied I just don't think there has been overwhelming positivity or anything. Plenty of people like it but also plenty of people don't.

Now that is how disney spins it

The boards aren't extremly relevant in the grand scheme of things Disney has started to tune out of this stuff. Do you think that if they cared about what people on these boards they'd have raised the prices dramatically over the last few years? Nope. Theme park boards lack appeal to me. I suppose I could go there.

They've said people really like it. If everyone was putting the lowest option it would be a problem. Also multiple cast I've talked to have loved the new system. It makes everything easier for them. If they said people love it they'd have lied.

They didn't say which people. Or how many. That renders it meaningless in my book.

I'm confused about this response since you are the one who brought up the boards here:

Ok...this is where we say farewell...

You cannot - in seriousness - be taking Disney's "what the guests want" at face value.

Even the staunchest of pixie pounders don't use that one.

I think a reasonable assessment is that the bands are highly favored by 25% or so, highly disliked by 10-20% or so, and the rest firmly neutral.

As in they used to have key cards, tickets and fastpass machines...now they have bands...which is essentially a straight side grade to the majority...I would stand on that.

Wdw uses their feedback to dictate what amounts to good business moves...but the official announcements are fluff and always have been.

They've claimed in the past that direct transportation options they've experimented with were eliminated due to "guest feedback"...
Right, because a paying customer would ever say get rid of a bus that they could one day use, etc....that's legitimate.

And my favorite: "guest feedback" and the "servers" said to take the appetizer and tip out of the dining plan... And then raise the cost of the dining plan...

As dr evil would say: "riiigghht"

Those Staggs comments are meant for business analysts and press and maybe the wholesale travel industry...they are not meant to be taken at face value by Joe Q. Public.

It's not even a secret...it common sense to doubt.

It's getting a tad embarrassing in here.

Again...unless you've been on the otherside...it's probably wise to yield certain points. No offense.

You're saying the same thing. They lied. Are you saying they lied?

You're right. Corporations never lie, exaggerate or put manicured spins on anything. Just ask the friendly folks who worked for Enron.

As I mentioned earlier when someone implements something as substantial as NextGen you're never going to hear that it's a failure, even if it is. What you will get is all of the positives and none of the negatives.

Not to say that Disney flat out lied, but I doubt that we're getting the full truth.

Ok...this is where we say farewell... It's been good knowing you.

You cannot - in seriousness - be taking Disney's "what the guests want" at face value. How come? Are you the gatekeeper to what guests can and can't like? I feel like the company that has grown profits consistently over the last few years is a better judge. What if they said guests had high satisfaction with a new E Ticket? Would that meet your standards?

Even the staunchest of pixie pounders don't use that one. Cool. Deviating from the norm.

I think a reasonable assessment is that the bands are highly favored by 25% or so, highly disliked by 10-20% or so, and the rest firmly neutral. I'd love to see your customer satisfaction data on that.

As in they used to have key cards, tickets and fastpass machines...now they have bands...which is essentially a straight side grade to the majority...I would stand on that. Do eloborate please.

Wdw uses their feedback to dictate what amounts to good business moves...but the official announcements are fluff and always have been. Quarterly Earnings call do not constitute fluff. When the SEC is at your door you do not lie.

They've claimed in the past that direct transportation options they've experimented with were eliminated due to "guest feedback"...
Right, because a paying customer would ever say get rid of a bus that they could one day use, etc....that's legitimate.
This is weak, because guest feedback could denote both low satisfaction as well as not enough interest. An answer like "that's nice, but not necessary" could kill projects.

And my favorite: "guest feedback" and the "servers" said to take the appetizer and tip out of the dining plan... And then raise the cost of the dining plan...
I'm sure they were based on survey work. It did make certain guests irate.

As dr evil would say: "riiigghht"

Those Staggs comments are meant for business analysts and press and maybe the wholesale travel industry...they are not meant to be taken at face value by Joe Q. Public. During earnings calls too. I'm sure the SEC is just as patient.

It's not even a secret...it common sense to doubt.

Cool.

Again...unless you've been on the otherside...it's probably wise to yield certain points. No offense. Non taken. We have an understanding. :) I do wonder what you mean by the otherside though. Are you saying like Executive Team of F500 companies?

All together a fascinating rebuttal.

I'm not saying they didn't because I know people have. disney isn't going to say people don't like it. If they did that's bad PR.
You can't lie (unless you cross illegal lines) in quarterly earnings calls. They've said among other things guest spending is up too.

This is all in the face of one of the most comprehensive additions of value to WDW vacations, with nextgen.

Take a deep breath and back slowly away from the font colors.......

It is what it is. As you point out in your response. Capex to other areas besides WDW. No reason to tout a re-themed Toontown as a major ride win for Orlando.

It is what it is - the 5-7 year plan for WDW - Avatar next

They don't need any help on spin and marketing. They're the masters.

But you're right. We do get NextGen. ....
