Disneyland Strike Authorization Vote July 19

I heard about this when I was doing Youtube and what I think why Disneyland is this is so that they can hire more cast members for Christmas and Halloween because when you look at it Christmas and Halloween are the busiest holidays for Disneyland and I think that's why the cast members are requesting more money and bonuses for Christmas. But I can't imagine why Disneyland would put on a strike when it's gonna be the fall and the fall is the more active season when people go on vacations when kids aren't in school on the weekends. Will Disneyland close when this strike does happen or will it still be open to visitors at that time?

If I'm reading everyone's comments correctly and assume they're reasonable, the DL employees will either strike this week (maybe today or tomorrow) if they don't get what they want in negotiations...or they'll just wait until September 30? is that reasonable assumption?

So if they do strike....whats CM's wants on Bloggers and Guests? Do they want people to not go?

'Back in the day' it was a big deal to cross a picket line. As a (former) union member we were encouraged to honor any strike and not cross picket lines and to boycott businesses whose members were on strike. It was to show support for the workers as well as to put pressure on businesses to meet the strikers' demands. So if I were a local and that was what the Disney unions wanted, no, I wouldn't go. But that would be because I knew I could easily go after the strike was settled.

That being said, I suppose not many non-local people are going to cancel a Disney trip to honor a picket line.

Each person is going to have to decide for themselves.

The layout of DL is going to make an effective picket line pretty challenging. They won't be able to picket on Disney property and Disney owns pretty much the entire couple of blocks. Yes, they could set up on the sidewalk along Harbor. Not sure what they could do around Disneyland Drive on the west side of the parks/DTD.

The leaked union side says they are asking for a $6/hour raise. Disney is offering 50 cents. That shows you how far apart they are
That really shows you bargaining strategy. Both sides ask for much more than they will realistically get.

No strike has been announced. The speculations here about Sept 30 are because the workers for DCA have a contract through then, and all the unions may want to walk out together (and Disneyland Resort is very busy in October, putting more pressure on management to reach an agreement). The DL unions may want to walk out earlier. Or they may just keep negotiating, just using the strike vote as leverage.

I’m really torn on what to do. We’re here right now for softball and don’t want to book tickets until we know we’re done playing. We initially planned to start park time on the 28th, but leaning more towards the 25th if we get knocked out. I’m just nervous to commit with the strike.

We fly in from Florida on the 27th...so hoping for the best...not much else we can do.

I'm spending loads of money right now on a late fall visit, like I'm sure many are doing. The union knows exactly what it's doing, which is why it's doing it. They don't care if it affects peak vacation time, that's the power they have and really the only thing that will land with Disney, disrupting peak travel time.

I hope Disney is able to work with the union and come to an agreement before there is disruptions.

My view is this. I support unions. I grew up in a union households. When I go on vacation that my money and I'll go where and when I want. I feel that my family and myself are the priority when and where we go on vacation.
There will no strike I predict.

Right, I was trying not to take a side on the union issue, just pointing out the most powerful tool the union has on their side is disruptions during a very busy period. The smartest move for Disney would be to avoid disruptions.

I likely won't be adjusting my travel plans unless something wildly drastic (like the park is entirely closed or something). I'm out there for Knott's Scary Farm and Universal Halloween Horror nights as well. Disney is a big part (about 50% of my plans), but flights are booked, hotels are booked, rental car is booked, it's as late in the Halloween season as I can go to get the coolest weather but also not miss Halloween... I don't have much flexibility other than cancelling. I won't enjoy crossing picket lines and seeing that stuff bleeding into the Disney bubble, but as an out of towner, I don't have a lot of easy quick adjustments I could make.

I'm sure it can get close though, like side walks across and in front of Pixar hotel and Grand California. So it would bleed into things a little, especially if I'm over at the DLH and walking across to the GC for dinner or something. I assume the road and sidewalks are public areas.

Oh, I guess also I would literally be walking through them if I was walking up from the Westin (up between the DLH/Pixar and GC), I'm staying there the arrival day and my departure day since I have early check in / late check out benefits.

Sidewalks not sure about but you can be assured...police will be out...I doubt there will be a strike.

I think that Disneyland Drive and Magic Way are owned by Disney, so those sidewalks would be private. I am not 100% sure though. Harbor or Katella though would be fair game.

I also doubt it will come to a strike.

From the Disneyland Forward FAQ:

Disney would pay the City $40 million to take over the responsibility of three existing streets:
  • Magic Way – a 1,150-foot street between Disneyland Drive and Walnut Street.
  • Hotel Way – a 125-foot entry road to Disney's Pumbaa Parking Lot.
  • The remnant of Clementine Street south of Katella Avenue leading into Disney’s Toy Story Parking Lot.
So those are all currently under Anaheim's control. I'm sure that DL Drive is, also.

You would actually walk from DLH to GC by going through Downtown Disney.
