Disneyland Space Mountain question

We just got back from our first Disneyland trip. We usually go to DisneyWorld every year so it was nice to see the "differences".

Space Mountain confused us. I know that they are doing the rockin both parks promotion, but I wasn't expecting Space Mountain to have any lighting inside. Disneyland's Space Mountain reminded me more of the inside of Rockin Rollercoaster at MGM.

Are the lighting effects something that are always in the ride?

I've heard that the lighting is only for the Rockin' thing. It was nice and dark for our visit last October.

The lighting is only for the rockin promotion, it is usually very dark inside. I actually like it since you never get to see it any other time really!! Glad they are only doing it for a few months though!!

I agree. A nice change, but I prefer it dark. Of course, I'm still looking for the floating chocolate chip cookie that disappeared with the last refurbishment.:upsidedow

how long is the rockin' parks thing going to last, i know it says Jan-April on the website, does that mean the end of april or april 1st?

Probably either right befoer the big Spring Break crowd (early April) or right after the Spring Break rush (late April). Most likely the latter.

I heard "through April," which implies the end of April.

I definitely prefer it dark. Part of the fun of Space Mountain is not being able to see the track. Of course when you have ridden it literally HUNDREDS of times, you kinda know where the twists and turns are going to be. . .

I do love the music though. . .

I haven't been on Disneyland's Space Mountain since 2002. It was down for refurbishment in 2004 when we visited. How does it compare (forgetting the Rockin' promotion currently) to the way it was previously? How "refurbished" is it?
We're just back from a weekend at Disneyland Paris and its Space Mountain was a good ride, but it was much more like Rock'n'RollerCoaster in ride style; still dark but with spectacular lighting effects. I didn't however like the overall theming which was a bit too "Jules Verne" for me as opposed to "space-like".

The Rockin' Both Parks overlay ends on April 26 which, incidentally, is also the end of the "Everybody Plays for the Kid's Price" promotion.

YES I miss that too! We always looked for that and then strangely enough ended up buying a chocolate chip cookie within an hour of getting off the ride. HMMMM.....

They really improved it. The track layout is the same. But the launch sequence, music, darkness inside the building, the music, and ending are much better. We always thought Space Mtn at DL was so-so. After the refurb we said "wow"!
