I never get lucky enough for the doom buggies to stop in this area or anywhere in the whole ride for that matter! There's so much I would like to capture on this ride but at least I've got a few fairly decent ones........

Love this picture. I have a quick question about this, was it intentional for that one statue to be broken? Or was it simply broken and left that way? I have always wondered and figured someone here might know! :confused3

which made for some great footage using movie maker. I'm addicted to movie maker now. Does Disboards have a video section for WDW or DL?

Thanks! I've wondered the same thing but I'm pretty sure it's intentional. Either that or he said something that angered the one next to him and got head-butted! :sad2:

Does everybody know that the singing head second from left is modeled after a gentleman named Thurl Ravenscroft (great name, huh?) who is no longer with us, but is famous for doing the voice of Tony the Tiger - "They're grrrrrrrrrrrreatttt!"? Thurl also did many other voices for Disney - he is one of the Tiki Room voices, but I cannot recall which one and he was one of the Bears in the CB Jamboree, and other various character voices. He was also very active in the Laguna Pageant of the Masters down here in SoCal, but I was familiar with Thurl at the tiny church in Hollywood that I went to every Sunday as a child. Thurl was part of a wacky singing group from the deep south called the Goose Creek Quartet, and they were a big part of the history of the Church, which was called the Little Country Church of Hollywood, and it had beautiful gardens and grounds all the way up until it burned to the ground (arson, I think) a year or two ago. Thurl had passed away a while before the Country Church burnt down, but I recall as a kid, it was always a big deal when all the members of the Goose Creek Quartet were going to sing in church that day. Somehow, someone from Disney heard Thurl's booming bass voice and he did voice work - and lived quite well from it - for the rest of his life, as well as became a permanent part of the Haunted Mansion because his 'head' will 'live on' forever!!

That is such a great story, Sherry! :goodvibes Thanks for sharing, I have never heard that. Something new to think of on the Doombuggy!!

Thurl was also a very tall man - which sort of fits with the deep voice. But you would never know it from looking at that detached head! I wish I could remember who he is in the Tiki Room. Pretty much anything Disney did that needed a deep voice for up until the '90s or so, I think he was called upon for or did, until he just couldn't do it anymore. I remember the Church people used to tell me as a kid, "Thurl is [such and such voice] on [such and such ride]" and run down the list of them and I only retained the HM one in memory because the head went along with it! But I think he probably made BIG bucks for doing the Tony the Tiger voice because...who doesn't know Tony the Tiger? Frosted Flakes is one of the most popular cereals around and those commercials were famous.

Here's a great interview with Thurl in front the Mansion..

Well, we all love your photos so much, Danny, so I am pleased if I can contribute just a little bit to the thread with Disney-related trivia or lore, to complement or accompany one of your beautiful pictures! And I wanted to make sure everyone knew of Thurl Ravenscroft, because he was so integral to Disney and Disneyland, and pop culture in general (because of his voice work for Kellogg's and other notable companies), but very few people knew of him!!

Seeing that photo gives me butterflies in my stomach! I am a roller coaster wimp, so even the sight of one or of any kind of crazy thrill ride makes me nervous! I was watching a special on the Travel Channel the other day about "Extreme Thrill Rides" or something, and they showed some things that I can not understand how anyone goes on! Terrifying!
