Disneyland Novice on a Solo trip - Thursday 26th to Saturday 28th March 2015

Thanks Giulia and BadPinkTink. Glad you're enjoying it - going to try to finish day 1 now. :thumbsup2

So I went back to the park for my dinner reservation at Blue Bayou.

On my way I saw a photopass photographer at the castle and decided to ask for my first photos. I was a little self conscious at first but by the 3rd day I was asking every photographer I met for pictures - it grows on you! These are the photos after I added borders - an option we don't have with the DLP photopass. I'd bought the Minnie baseball cap in New Orleans Square earlier in the day.

I was really excited about Blue Bayou and had decided I'd wait for a water-side table no matter how long it took. I arrived at the restaurant at 4.15 and waited ages to have my details taken. They really need one line for reservations and a separate one for those who want to spend 10 minutes endlessly expressing their disappointment that there wasn't a table waiting for them when they happened to turn up wanting one. I know that sounds mean but it's frustrating to have to wait so long when you've gone to the trouble of pre-booking and others haven't. This happens at DLP as well - it's not unique to DLR.

I finally had my name taken at 4.45 and said I'd like to wait for a table by the water. The CM said it would be another 45 minutes and I said that was fine, I would wait. The waiting area was bunged but I found a seat and barely 10 minutes later my name was called so I went up to the CM who called me. He then looked at the piece of paper he was holding and said "oh, sorry - you wanted a water side table." I said yes I did and he asked me to wait a minute while he went to check. Thankfully he came back and said it was fine and led me to a table next to the water - yay! Like Blue Lagoon in DLP the restaurant is very dark and I didn't want to use flash on my camera. This is a very poor photo of a boat going past on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride - I waved too. #ShamelessinCalifornia.

Now for the food. Apologies - I tried to take photos of the menu and food but they were hopeless due to the low lighting.

My starter was New Orleans Gumbo - A rich flavorful Stew with Chicken, Andouille Sausage, and Tasso Ham served with Cajun-style Dirty Rice.
It didn't disappoint - full of spicy flavour and really filling so I was glad it wasn't a huge portion.

Mains was Herb Panko-Crusted Rack of Lamb - Pan-Seared, Cassoulet of Cannellini Beans, Feta Cheese and Rosemary Jus.
This was gorgeous - I'd asked for it to be cooked medium and it was perfect. I wanted to pick up the bones and suck the remaining meat from them. As an Irish girl I'm partial to potatoes with my meal so wasn't sure how the beans would be but they were lovely.

Dessert was Apple and Huckleberry Galette - a puff pastry and fruit dessert with a scoop of fresh cream. It was just ok - nothing special about it.

Included in the price of the meal was a fastpass ticket to the reserved seating area for Fantasmic at 9pm and a foam seat cushion to sit on - the viewing area is all seated so the cushion makes a big difference to comfort.

Did I say that the Disneyland park is alcohol free, even in the table service restaurants? Wine therefore wasn't an option with dinner so I drank iced water and dreamed of a Glowtini. :cloud9: The cost of this meal was $61 before tax which was pretty pricey but the food was good and I decided it was worth it to me as it pretty much guaranteed me a good view for the show.

I had finished eating by 6pm and there was still 2 1/2 hours before I had to go to the viewing area for the show so off I went to have some more fun.

Mickey's Soundsational Parade was at 6.30 so I made my way back to Main Street to watch that. I was too late for a place on the kerb but was able to stand behind a family who were sitting on the kerb after I asked them if they would be staying sitting down which they were. By this stage my feet were telling me they would love a sit down too but I ignored them. :rotfl2:

So I took lots of photos of the parade which was very good indeed. The parade was much longer than Magic on Parade so seemed really good value. As there was at Christmas in DLP, there was a frozen pre-parade then a short interval before the main parade started.

Anna was lovely.

Elsa had that weird white hair she had in DLP at Christmas.

Between Frozen and the main parade they sold balloons and snacks on the street.

First float was Mickey and his band.

Aladdin was next.

Then Ariel

Donald Duck and the 3 Caballeros

Princesses

Jungle Book / Lion King / Tarzan

Neverland

Mary Poppins - the photo of the chimney sweeps was pants. :(

I so enjoyed the parade and afterwards went back to New Orleans Square and queued for POTC - it said 15 mins and was about 20. They have added some Jack Sparrow animatronics to the ride here. There are fewer drops than DLP and no ride photo. It was fun but not worth queuing for again to go back on.

Next I decided to queue for the Jungle Cruise. This is a ride they don't have at DLP. Queue was about 20 minutes again and I loved the ride, laughed from beginning to end. Not going to spoil it for anyone with details but it is well worth a go if you have an ironic sense of humour.

It was gone 8pm by now so I went to Haunted Mansion next which I knew was close to where I needed to queue for the Fantasmic viewing area and it was pretty much a walk on so I walked on in. I have done PM in DLP before with Catherine but with her priority pass so we missed the pre-show and stretching room so was glad to get to do this from the beginning. This bit certainly added to the eeriness of the ride - I'd pretty much giggled from beginning to end when I went in DLP.

So I walked a little further along the river and joined the queue for the reserved viewing area. I chatted to people in the queue to pass the time then we were being let in. I was 2nd row which was fine as there was loads of room and everyone was sitting down so the view was perfect.

I didn't take any photos - if you want to see some put "fantasmic disneyland" into google images. The show involved Mickey Mouse, a fire breathing dragon, lots of pirates and the Columbia pirate ship, the Mark Twain with a host of Disney characters on board. As someone who loves Dreams I didn't think it measured up. There was so little continuity - it felt very disjointed. I enjoyed it and was glad I saw it but wouldn't want to go back and watch it every night as I do Dreams when I'm in DLP.

My last event before I went back to my hotel and collapsed in a heap was a show on Tomorrowland Terrace by a Beatles tribute band. I'm actually much too young to be a Beatles fan  but somehow a boyfriend got me hooked on them a few years ago and I wanted to see this. They'd played throughout the day and their last performance was at 10pm. Having walked over there, like the good Irish girl I am, I got myself a much needed cup of tea, found a table and waited the few minutes until they started. The show was ok - the guys should have spent more time practising the songs than they had perfecting their fake Scouse accents - but it did finish off a great day in Disneyland Park and I walked back to the hotel happy and exhausted and really looking forward to Disney California Adventure the next day. :goodvibes

keep it coming! the parade looks great - quite different to DMOP. glad you liked blue bayou. I'm off now to look up fantastic!

Another great update Anne - from your post on another thread can I assume you went to WOC? I hope so it looks fantastic! (they were just setting up for the launch last time we were there so haven't seen it yet)

Looking forward to your next update :-)

Thanks Dee - will hopefully get started on day 2 tomorrow evening. x

Thank you Shelley - yes I saw WOC the following night - hopefully will get started on day 2 tomorrow. x

Who said tomorrow never comes? :rotfl2: Sorry this has taken so long.

Before I move on to DCA I forgot to mention that after Fantasmic I stayed seated and watched the fireworks show - they are pretty spectacular and well worth watching. I'm told the ideal place to watch them from is Main Street but I felt I saw enough of them from my F! viewing spot to enjoy.

Ok so on Friday morning I was wakened by my alarm at 6.30 and resisted temptation to go back to sleep - I had Disney business to do. :thumbsup2

Breakfast at the hotel was ok - it filled a spot and the waffle machine was fun.

I got to the entrance to DCA just after 8 and went straight to Cars Land for Radiator Springs Racer. It was closed. The CMs said they were hoping it would open soon so I had a little wander about Cars Land and took some photos. I also was braver today about asking for photos from the photopass photographers so had loads of these.

The banners and borders are added afterwards when you download the photos and are very useful for hiding big bums. :D

When there was no sign of the ride opening soon I grabbed a fastpasss for RSR and hot footed it up to Paradise Pier and joined the queue for Toy Story Midway Mania. This ride was a lot of fun - a shooting game a bit like Buzz but very different at the same time. I wasn't particularly good but enjoyed it a lot. The queue even at that time was too long to wait for another go so I headed along the Pier and decided to go on Silly Symphony Swings. This is a bit of a kiddy ride but I liked it. I definitely wasn't doing California Screamin' and was a bit dubious about Mickey's Fun Wheel so decided to give it a miss for now but enjoyed Ariel's Undersea Adventure. There was a 15 minute wait for TSMM and the other 2 were walk ons.

I walked on to Grizzly Peak to find that Grizzly River Run was also closed - this was frustrating! Did some browsing in the store there and then decided to go back down to Cars Land and check out RSR again which had been open but was now closed again. The CMs said they would honour fastpasses at any time that day. I was hot and thirsty so went to the Cozy Cone Motel for a frozen lemonade which was delicious. I didn't want food but I did see some people eating breakfast cones so they do still do breakfast.

It was time to check out The Tower of Terror. I've never done this in Paris and it was one I was pretty nervous about. :bitelip: In the queue there was a group of teenage girls already screaming before they'd even got inside. I so didn't want to be in their lift. Well as it turns out being a single rider has its benefits because I was filtered off to join another line of 2 while the girls all went on to a different queue. :thumbsup2 I ended up sitting beside a teenage boy and his girlfriend which was fine until the first drop when I grabbed madly for the handle and got his hand. I couldn't let go until we'd stopped again - it was mortifying. As you can see from the ride photo he pretty much kept his hands in the air for the rest of the ride while I couldn't let go of the handle. :rotfl:

So ToT conquered I went shopping in Elias & Co then thought the best way to cool down would be to go to the Aladdin show. Wow - this was brilliant. The singing and dancing was so professional - as good as any professional production I've been to and Genie was fab-U-lous with his running dialogue of "in" jokes. I absolutely loved it. Afterwards I decided to go find some lunch. I'd noticed a mexican place at Pacific Wharf that looked good - Cocina Cucamonga.

On the way I came across a show on Buena Vista Street, The Red Car Trolley News Boys. This involved a story about Mickey Mouse going to Hollywood to seek his fortune. Again it was great - the singing and dancing was so professional.

At the restaurant I had a chicken fajita salad and a beer. Unlike DL, DCA sells alcohol. The salad was huge and really tasty.

Keeping fingers crossed I went back to see if Grizzly River Run was open and it was. I joined the single rider line and didn't have too much of a wait. This ride was loads of fun but I began to panic a bit once we moved off that I was going to get totally soaked - in the end all I got was a light splashing but 1 poor girl was drowned. It's the luck of the draw I suppose. On a day as hot as it was she would dry out quicky but not before entering the "wet Tshirt" competition.

I was feeling a bit wimpy for not being brave enough to try California Screamin so decided to try a smaller coaster, Goofy's Sky School. This also had a single rider line so I walked on. Again I was sat beside a teenage boy in the front seat of the car whose friends sat in the row behind. I absolutely hated it - the ups and downs on the track were ok but there is a section which runs flat but with 90 degree turns and every time we came to one of those I felt like I was going to fly off the track. I'm not a screamer but I did let out a few involuntary yelps - sorry guys.

I was ready for my afternoon rest then so went back to the hotel to lie down. I actually fell asleep and it was a huge struggle to get up again - I hadn't been terribly efficient so had walked for miles and the heat was pretty oppressive too. By the time I made it back to the park I'd missed the parade but had the following day to catch up so wasn't too worried. I had my reservation at Wine Country Trattoria but first I had my fingers crossed for RSR - surely it had to be open. It was and I loved it :cheer2: had to hold on to my hat to avoid losing it. I had seen the outside track and assumed it was all racing so was surprised by the underground bit. I really liked the ride - it's easy to see why it's so popular - but the number of breakdowns was pretty frustrating.

It was just getting dark when I finished and after getting the ride photo on the photopass I wandered up through Pacific Wharf towards Wine Country Trattoria. I was about half an hour early for my reservation so I treated myself to a frozen margarita from Rita's Baja Blenders. It wasn't very strong but was lovely and refreshing. :drinking1

There was a bit of a queue again to check in at the restaurant but once I had I was shown to a table immediately. I had a salad for starter and filet mignon for mains. The food was excellent and the steak cooked exactly as I asked. Dessert was minis of all 4 choices on the menu which was lots of fun - the tiramisu was amazing.

I am going to sound like an alco at this stage as while I had stuck to water for my meal I had looked at the cocktail menu and saw they served blue glowtinis. I missed out on a glowtini in Paris on my Christmas trip as Catherine had been sick so ordered 1 to finish off my lovely meal. The cocktail was delish and quite strong so I was pleasantly surprised when the bill came. There were no prices on the cocktail menu and I'd expected to pay a lot as wine was all over $10 a glass and beer nearly that. Well to my amazement the glowtini was $12.95 before tax. Considering the amount of alcohol in it I thought it compared very well to the wine and beer never mind to 17 euro in Cafe Fantasia! The meal package cost $41.99 and was worth every penny in my opinion.

So this was the World of Colour dining package and when I had finished it was time to go queue up for the reserved viewing area. It was standing viewing and I'm only 5'2 so I was really pleased when I got a space right at the railing front and centre in the section behind the splash zone. It was raised about 3 feet above that area so there was a clear view above the people there. I had forgotten my camera, left it in the hotel room, but had remembered my mobile phone so was able to join in the Mickey's Fun Wheel game. This really helped pass the time before the show started. It got pretty cool too in a strong breeze so I was glad I'd brought a hoody. Now again I enjoyed the show but felt it didn't flow as well as Dreams and there was zero emotion for me. It is clever but I think Dreams has spoiled me for anything else.

I was pretty shattered at this stage, the alcohol probably hadn't helped, so I went back to the hotel where I bought a couple of T shirts and postcards in the gift shop. I had been pretty disappointed at the range of postcards in the parks - pretty much only Mickey and friends available - I guess they're just not popular enough for them to carry a wide range. I was too tired to pack so set my alarm for 5.30 to do it in the morning. I had my Magic Morning in Disneyland park the following day.

Im really enjoying reading about your trip - Its bringing back lots of happy memories. Im a big fan of DL and would love to go again at some point. I agree with you about Goofy's Sky school as well- those flat bits and turns really freak me out.

Thanks kaoden and A Small World. Glad you're enjoying reading. :goodvibes And thank you Small World for making me feel less of a wimp about Goofy's Sky School.

sounds amazing! you're making me really really want to go!!!
Oh and i just remembered I never thanked you for the postcard you sent to the boys! they were thrilled! Nick brought it to Playschool
and all to show it off!

Ah, you're very welcome Dee - an easy way to share a bit of joy with the little ones. pixiedust: Glad it arrived safely. :goodvibes

its really great to see a different perspective on Disneyland, Im taking notes, might just have to try the Glotini :)

Been enjoying your update - and thanks for all the parade pictures, haven't seen too much of the parade before. It looks fun and quite a number of floats/segments.

Sorry that you have been a little disappointed by the nighttime shows - though, think it might be that they just aren't living up to Dreams for you as most other reviews I have read have nothing but good things to say (well, at least about the shows, not always positives about the viewing situation).

Definitely a bummer about those rides breaking down as much as they did - but at least you got on them eventually

@Anemone what time did you have the Blue Bayou Reservation for and what times was Fantasmic? I'm doing the ADR this week and I'm just wondering your thoughts on the times. If you were doing the package again would you choose the same time dining reservation or a different time? :)

Thanks TheMaxRebo, I'm pleased you're enjoying reading. As I said I did enjoy both shows - just nowhere near as much as the Paris show and the viewing areas were perfect. And yes, I was so pleased to get to ride GRR and RSR. They were both loads of fun. :)

@BadPinkTink [nice - I didn't know that was possible!] I didn't book until less than 3 weeks out so the only BB dinner time left was 4.40pm. [I got ticket for the first F! show [9pm] - apparently if your BB reservation is after 6.30 you get tickets for the 2nd show.] 4.40 was very early for dinner so I only had snacks for lunch. It worked out fine as I did some rides in between dinner and F! but I think I preferred the timings the following evening when I had my dinner reservation at 8pm then WOC at 9.45pm.

thanks, that makes things easier. I was thinking about 6 or 7pm as I would prefer the 9pm show.
