So I know a lot about planning Disneyworld trips, but find myself going on an unexpected Disneyland trip with my daughters HS Orchestra. We are going April 16 through April 21. We have two full park days. Where do I begin??? Is there a busy/slow time at DL? Feeling overwhelmed trying to figure it all out!:confused3:confused3:confused3

There is a Disneyland FORUM here on the DIS.

Have a great trip!

It's easier. So very much easier. Just poke around the forums for a while. You'll be fine. Search for a comparison of attractions between land and world so you know what to see and skip. Make sure to enjoy Cars Land and World of Color.

I had a DL annual pass for awhile and it requires way less planning than WDW. Both parks are right across from one another and you can easily walk between the two. The forums that Robo linked are a really great resource. Disneyland is great! POTC is exceptionally better in DL than WDW.

The hardest part about planning a trip to Disneyland is accepting that you really don't have to plan, beyond making a Blue Bayou reservation if you want one (and those are not hard to come by) and thinking about a World of Color strategy. My number one trip: take advantage of the Radiator Springs Racers single rider line.

Have a fabulous trip!

I went to DL my one and only time while Cars Land was being built, so I can't speak for it. But I loved DL. Having been to WDW as many times as I have, I found the differences to be charming. I was there in early June and the weather was AMAZING which probably helped my opinion. Here are my quick thoughts:

1. On the DL forum there is a constantly linked post about DL for WDW vets. It is a long post but very informative. I don't remember the posters name but he is always on there. Check it out.
2. Very easy to get around the two parks. The entrances are about as far away from each other as our MK to the edge of the seven seas lagoon.
3. Dining is much less traumatic. Try a TS, which is probably available same day.
4. If you like roller coasters, you must make a priority of their Space Mountain. It is completely different and amazing. Smooth and fast.
5. I second the request for World of Color. Amazing show. But you might feel more like WDW tring to get a spot for it as there is no seating. Standing only. I would LOVE for WDW to trade out Fantasmic for World of Color. That stadium would be ideal.
6. And finally, I was blown away by Pirates of the Caribbean, which I did not expect to be any different than ours.

Have fun.

Thanks all! Knew I could count on the DIS! I don't know if I am more disappointed that I don't need to über plan or relieved!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2: can't wait to see my little girl (haha she is a high school senior!) up on a Disney stage!:love:

In hindsight, I would stay at the Candy Cane Inn. I stayed further away (requiring a shuttle) and regretted it.

I often see WDW vets post on the DLR boards in a panic because there is no park schedule up 6 months in advance and they don't know what to do. The answer is: sit back and relax. See Hydroguy's DLR guide for WDW vets in the stickies on the DLR boards.

I LOVE Candy Cane Inn! We stay there every trip.

We just did our first trip to DL and LOVED it.

I second the suggestion of single rider line for RSR. We rode 3-4 times back to back in about an hour using the single rider. Standby was 45 min to an hour. You may not be in the same car, but you might be (two of our four were every single time). We did FP one time so we could all be together, and that took about 20 min.

World of Color. You need a FP for this, so read up on that and decide where you think you want to be, so you get the right color FP.

Fantasmic was incredible. We used the "light trick" and had a great view. You do need to be at the light pole about an hour before F! We were there at that time. Another family joined us about 5 min later, and then LOTS of people came toward us with disappointed looks for about 15 min more.

We hopped several times a day every day, so you do WANT hoppers for your trip.

We love DL!!!! Our supposed to be one family trip years ago so DD could see the Aladdin show before it closed (which Disney changed their mind after announcing the closing and it is still there), turned into an annual DL trip. Get hoppers! As someone noted above the two parks are right next to each other. All that separates them is a plaza- the walk is shorter than going from where a WDW bus drops you off to a park gate. Also bag check is on the outer edges of the plaza, so there is no bag check to slow you up going from park to park. You can literally get from the back corner of one park to the back corner of the other in 10 minutes- we have done it!

No huge planning required for DL- which is one of the things we like about it. The old FP system is still alive and well. Dining reservations can be made 60 days in advance- but things won't fill up that early. It isn't too hard to get reservations most places. The CS in our opinion is better than most in WDW, so you can easily do without TS.

For World of Color, which is fantastic, we do the dining package. Then we take ponchos and put ourselves right down in the wet zone (depending on which way the wind is blowing- you can get wet). We usually go get a spot around 45 minutes before the show. The other prime spots will go a little earlier, but the wet zone usually takes a little longer to fill up. Everyone stands for the show and I am short, so I like to be down front where I am not blocked.

Fantasmic is better at DL than at WDW, but it takes a pretty big time commitment. There is no auditorium for it like at WDW- so people stake out spots hours ahead of time. In the off season, it only plays on the weekend, so you may not even get a change to pick that up depending on what days you go. We like to splurge and do the Fantasmic dessert package. That books 30 days in advance, and it can fill up really quick. With that, you get an actual chair. You get a box of desserts, cheese, fruit and crackers, and unlimited soft drinks, water, coffee, hot chocolate etc. If you do the first Fantasmic, then you get to stay in your seats and watch the fireworks (not with a castle view, but we still like it). One person in your party does still have to line up ahead of time to pick your seats (there are 3 rows), and how early depends on how much your care about what seats you get. I will say that if the 1st row is gone, then pick the 3rd if at all possible, because in the 3rd you can scoot your chairs back and even stand up if someone in front of you is blocking your line of sight. We make the mistake of picking 2nd row in the center once instead of 1st row on the edge- big mistake because we got the big and tall family in front of us- I swear there was no one in that family that was under 6 foot 3! Won't make that mistake again!

If you like shows- even for a short trip, the Aladdin show is well worth the time commitment. It is the best show I have ever seen in a Disney park. It is about a 40 minute show, and it is fabulous.

Radiator Springs Racers is far superior to Test Track. Also, if you get a chance to ride it at night, it is amazing after dark. If you get a chance you should see Carsland after dark too. For RSR, there is kind of the old TSM FP run and the line generally stays long all day. The FPs will run out pretty early in the day, so you want to be sure and get there. But, there is also a single rider line. We rode it multiple times using that line on our last trip.

You will find posts on all of these things and more in the Disneyland forum!

I love the land almost as much as the world. Here are my brief tips:

1) Park hoppers are a must. The two parks are located right across a courtyard from one another. You don't even have to do another security check! This easy hopping is unique. Take advantage of it.

2) Don't underestimate the time you want to spend around Cars Land. It's really great. You feel like you are right in the movie. Always get a FP for Radiator Springs at rope drop. Do this on both of your days! Take advantage of single rider, if you want to ride more.

3) If you like Toy Story Midway Mania, you are in luck. The ride has a short wait at Disney Land. I know it's weird. How can it be 90 minute wait in Hollywood Studios but only 5 minutes at CDA?

4) Don't miss out on Pirates, Space Mountain, or Fantasmic. They are different than in Disney World. You will have fun finding the differences.

5) If you have a bad back or neck, don't ride Matterhorn Bobsleds. It's an older roller coaster that is really jerky.

6) Ride a classic. Disney Land still has Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and Snow White Scary Adventures. Exact same as the world used to have. It's super fun to relive those early Disney experiences.

7) Have fun and be proud of your daughter. As a father who's children perform with various groups, it's great to see your children on stage.

There's not as much to plan for DL as there is for WDW. I'm just getting used to planning a WDW trip and am still 1 1/2 yrs from booking the trip. DL needs alot less planning. Read Hydroguy's DL for WDW vet's on the DL board, and this will give you lot's of useful info. The top three off site hotels are: Howard Johnson's Anaheim (HOJO's), Best Western Park Place Inn and Mini Suites (BWPPI), and Candy Cane Inn (CCI). All of these hotels less than a 10 mins walk to the parks. I have stayed at HOJO's and BWPPI, and for me personally I love the BWPPI. It's a clean basic hotel right across the street from the parks. At DL, unlike WDW, the parks and DT Disney are within walking distance, depending on the hotel you choose to stay at. DL and CA are less than a minute walk to each other, so once you get to the parks, it's easy to walk to everything. It's for this reason if you have only 2 days a park hopper is advisable, so that you can maximize your time at the parks. When the crowds get heavy at one park, you can "hop" over to the other park. I also agree that Carsland, and Radiator Springs Racers is not to be misse. Carsland is like stepping right into the middle of the movie. Flo's has excellent food, and the Cozy Cone's have great snack options. Hope this helps.
