I just thought everyone should know how amazing Disneyland Guest Services can be if you let them know when things arent right.
I went to Disneyland in October and stayed 4 nights at the Disneyland hotel. There was terrible construction and jack hammers going at all times of the morning. Disney is giving us a Comp Trip (we chose the week before Christmas) and are giving us 4 nights at the Grand Californian and 4 day park hopper tickets. I cant believe it!! They obviously care about their fans and just wanted to give them a little pat on the back!! Anyone else going Dec. 19-23rd?
:santa:

WOW, that is truly amazing. How nice of them.

You got VERY lucky. We had the same experience when we went in November, and I also called to complain. First of all, I had to call all over to get in touch with Disneyland Resort customer service (I got transferred 3 times and put on hold and cut off--eventually I told someone my whole story and she said "I don't know why they put you through to us..."), but eventually I spoke to someone there. I told about our experience, and after a great deal of him "thinking about it" (he called me back with his final verdict at the end of the day)--he said they were willing to credit our account for 100.00. We stayed for 3 nights, and paid extra for a premium room with a 'deluxe' view. This deluxe view included dump trucks and tarps, and that was it! I thanked him for the credit, but thought--really? We stay at this hotel about twice a year (for the last 10 years) and I am the one writing the glowing reviews on trip report. He never said sorry for the mess or anything like that--in fact he acted like "there are no gaurantees of service or view, despite paying for the upgrade...".

I had never called their customer service to complain for anything, but this was one time I felt it was really justified. There have been other trips there that I felt could have been much better, but I am not the type to expect perfection--expecially from the Disneyland Hotel. But this whole experience has left me feeling really torn about ever staying there again.

I am happy you got some good service.

I also had a great experience this last summer. We got to the hotel around noon and they told us we'd have a refurbed room but that it wouldn't be ready until the regular check-in time, around 3:00. So we went to the pool and had a very relaxing afternoon. By around 3:00, however, we were more than ready for the room. This was the week where the weather topped 112 and the heat was unbearable. We rotated between pruned and melting. Every half hour, I went to the front desk to inquire and kept things lighthearted by making dumb jokes with the CM's. When we finally got into our room at 5:00, they sent up six freshly baked chocoloate dipped Mickey rice krispie treats and six ice cold glasses of milk.

I feel they really do fit your particular inconvenience with an appropriate gift (your attitude also helps!). Being jackhammered out of your room every day really does warrant another trip, IMHO, and good for them for recognizing that.

My one beef with Disney right now, with all this construction going on, is that they aren't really being forthcoming with the information upon booking. They definitely should not be charging for premium view rooms if they are overlooking construction. I suppose they feel that it is up to the purchaser to ask the questions, like a buyer beware sort of thing, but I expect more of Disney. I'm sorry, lisa, that you only got $100 credit. You should have definitely been credited for the difference between a standard view and premium view room for the amount of nights you were there.

I dont know about anyone else but everytime I have stayed at a Disney Hotel we have gotten it on the first night. I am glad that they did right by you and made your stay a little better.

EVERY time you've stayed in a Disney Hotel you get fresh baked treats? I've stayed many, many times (even the Grand Floridian) and this was the first time. You must have incredible luck.

Every time we have stayed we have recieved chocoalte dipped rice krispy treats the first night. As well as chocolate coins on the beds every night. We have also recieved creative animals out of our towels. I guess I ahve been a lucky girl

How exciting! But.... when you booked your recent trip were you aware that the DLH was being renovated?? If so I don't see why you complained, you could've chose to stay someplace else *much more quiter. Hopefully your comp trip will be a quiet one.

I also have had a recent great experience and 'gift' from Guest Services/Communications (though not nearly as great as what the OP received, but I'm still very happy with it!), resulting from a recent hotel stay.

Anyone who has been following along with my TR from my recent Christmas trip to DLR already knows this story, but I will explain for the ones who don't know.

My latest stay at the Paradise Pier Hotel (and I've stayed at all 3 of the DLR hotels, as many of us have) was the first time that I ever paid a large chunk of my hotel bill with Disney gift cards. I put down the first night's deposit on a regular debit card, and then paid a little more on a different debit card a couple months later, and then paid the balance due entirely in Disney gift cards.

I had called and spoken to numerous Cast Members on the phone prior to ever arriving at the PPH. Some of them told me I could use the gift cards over the phone to pay on the room. The others told me I had to wait and give the gift cards at check-in.

So when I arrived at the PPH just before 6:00 a.m. for a pre-check-in, I was not only delighted to find out that my room was ready right away and I could go right up to it, but I had also received a free upgrade to a park view room (DCA). (Again, anyone who has been following along with my TR from December has seen the photos from the window and how great the view was!) I was thrilled - it really was an awesome view. The sounds of bloodcurdling screams from Mickey's Wheel of Death serenaded me every night!:rotfl2: I was expecting something less (because I paid for only a standard room), but I got more than expected and I got the room at 6 a.m. so I got to see the gorgeous sunrise from the window.

Anyway, where everything went awry was in the whole processing of the gift cards. That seemed to set the snowball of chaos in motion. I had been told repeatedly that I could give them to the CM at check-in. When I tried to do that, he acted as though it was not standard procedure. He claimed they usually take gift cards for room payment at check-OUT. The thing is - and this is what they don't tell you on the phone before you arrive - they go ahead and block the entire amount due, plus "incidentals," on whichever card they have on file for you, even if you have paid.

Even after I convinced the CM at check-in to take my gift cards ring them up right there on the spot so I could be done with it and be all paid up (I didn't want to have to go down to the front desk on my last day - I just wanted to leave) - and he did it - they still blocked almost $300 of my money on a debit card they had in their system...which didn't have that much of a balance on it! They didn't even ask me if that card was okay to use, let alone tell me that my money was still being blocked even after I paid for the room in full. When I have paid in full, or paid the balance due upon check-in in the past, I've never had a large amount of money still blocked on my card. They always mark it as paid and that's it.

So I went about my business, spending money on this one card, not realizing that they had just gone ahead and blocked a large amount and that I had no funds available at that moment. I did not find out that this happened until I got home from my trip. Had I known while I was there at the PPH, I would have talked to them then. I instantly panicked, because it meant that I would be facing overdraft fees.

So, long story short, I called Reservations, I talked to someone at PPH. he was very apologetic and acknowledged that they had made a mistake in holding my money even after I paid in full. (They have a code they can enter into their system to release the hold on funds.) At the very least, they should have verified which card to use, but they didn't. He said that if I incurred any overdraft fees because of their goof, they would pay for them.

There were a couple of transactions that were going to get hit with overdraft fees. I had enough cash on hand to run down to my bank and deposit it so that I avoided those overdraft fees JUST in the nick of time - like within an hour of being hit with them. I was stressed and frustrated. I never called the PPH back, even though it was good to know they would have paid the fees I incurred if it had come to that. I just wanted to be done with the whole thing.

A couple of weeks later, I received a phone call from someone in Guest Relations/Services/Communications. She talked with me at length about the whole thing. She had received my complaint via the DLR website (which I made soon after I returned home) and she talked to the PPH people about the mistake - and they were all in agreement that they messed up.

So, basically, they gave me a free night's at the PPH on my next trip (free room and free parking), and each additional night I choose to stay at PPH will be $99.

It's not quite the jackpot that the OP got, but I was not expecting any freebies at all. I only wanted to make sure I wasn't slapped with any fees because of the PPH's mistake. However, they were very kind in giving me a free night on my next stay, and a highly, highly discounted rate for each additional night. So that means another holiday trip for me (with extra nights thrown in!)!:cool1:

Wow ~ I'm sorry about all that, I don't have a CC to my name *well I do have a Kohl's card with a $200 limit* I use my debit card for everything. When DD and I visited DLR for her B-day last July our 1st two nights were at the DLH - having pre paid for the 1st night I paid for the 2nd night at check in using $15 Disney GCs *hey my Kroger store had a deal on them last year around Easter time :upsidedow it took a while but all went well, I don't think they placed a hold on my debit card - but we paid for everything with some more $15 Disney GCs *I had a bunch - in fact we used some of them for our Thanksgiving visit and I might have 1 or 2 more lying around.

I have only had to use them once and I got to agree they are great.

7 years ago about 3-4 days before we where to head to WDW my mom passed. I called the airlines first to cancel our flights and it was not a happy experience. Next I called Disney to cancel and the CM I got told me that there would be a penalty if I cancelled. He then we on to say instead of canceling I could move my reservation free of charge. I asked what happens if I could not make the new date. I was informed we could just keep moving it for a while. After I got things worked out I called Disney and they simply moved my trip to the dates we could go. No extra fees or penalties.

Simply amazing service.

Shannon - It sounds like your experience was the proper way it's supposed to be handled with the gift cards! I don't know what went wrong with my experience! :rotfl2:

I use the debit card for everything as well - I switch back and forth between 2 debit cards. In the past, when I've checked in at any of the hotels, I've either already had the whole bill paid in advance so I didn't need to put anything else down, and they just put a small hold on the dreaded "incidentals" fee (but usually just $25 or something) which is then released after I check out, or I have paid the balance due with cash or another debit card at check-in. And they still only put a small hold on the incidentals fee. Otherwise, I was paid in full. They didn't keep a hold on a large amount of money if I paid in full when I checked in. That large of a hold should only stay there if you are planning to pay when you check out. There is a code they are supposed to enter into their system to tell it that you've paid and to release the hold. So when you pay the balance due in gift cards, it should be the same exact procedure as if you pay it in cash or with a debit card or credit card.

It seemed like the guy who checked me in at PPH - even though he was very nice - was really only familiar with processing the gift cards at check-out, not realizing that it's just as easy to take the GC's at check-in. So he went ahead and followed a certain procedure as though I would be paying at check-out, and I think that set the whole mess in motion. And their computer system just went ahead and selected one of my debit cards to place the (almost) $300 hold on, or the CM told it to choose that card, and no one asked me about it or told me it was happening!

It was all very askew. Hopefully that sort of thing won't happen again, but the good thing is that all the Disney people I spoke to when I found out what happened - whether it was the PPH people or the lady in Guest Services - seemed to acknowledge that they goofed, it was their mistake, and they would have had no trouble paying overdraft fees if I had not been able to avoid those. Getting the free PPH night and the $99 rate was a huge, unexpected bonus.

OP, wow, what wonderful pixie dust!

SherryE, I am curious why you use gift cards to pay for your hotel rooms. Is there a discount or some sort of benefit to this method of payment? It seems like a hassle and extra step as opposed to paying in cash or on a debit card so I am wondering what the benefit is that I am missing. Thanks!

Nope. No discount or benefit, really. It's just that it was the form of money I had available to me to use on this last trip. That was the first time that I'd ever used gift cards to pay for any part of a hotel room. In the past, I've either had the room all paid for in advance (before arriving) or I paid whatever the balance due was with a debit card, cash or credit card (when I used to use credit cards, that is) when I checked in.

It just so happened that I had accumulated a bunch of gift cards last year (I was setting them aside in little bits and pieces here and there, so I would have dedicated Disney money to use that couldn't be used for anything else). So when it was time to make a reservation, I had a few hundred bucks worth of gift cards stashed - and all the hotel CM's told me on the phone that it was no hassle and no problem at all - they take gift cards for individual packages or individual hotel rooms all the time - so it was already dedicated Disney money and was more practical for me to pay with GC's than to scrape another several hundred bucks in cash together to use the debit card.

It shouldn't have been an extra hassle. It should have been just as easy as paying with any other form of payment when I checked in. I never had any indication from anyone that it would be a problem. But the one CM who checked me in, I suppose, was used to doing things one certain way - not realizing that other CM's at the hotel had been doing things a little differently.

In any case, it all worked out, but everyone I talked to at PPH or at Disney when I noticed what happened (and panicked), acknowledged that it was their mistake, and that it could have been handled much more easily.

So, you live, you learn! And other than that problem, my trip was delightful and I absolutely loved my room, I was very grateful for the free upgrade to park view and was tremendously appreciative for the 'gift' they gave me later to make up for the debit card/gift card mess - that was totally unexpected!

I know you weren't asking me but I figure I'd share my opinion. I'm a BIG fan of Disney GCs - I'm not a great saver, the GCs are a way for me to "save" $$ that's just for Disney. But I learned of a great Disney GC deal last late March on the Budget Board ~ *here* it is if you want to take a peak. And *here's* my post from that thread explaining how I made out on the deal :thumbsup2

We have had our share of good luck and bad luck with Guest Services. Not sure why there is a big disparity in how they handle similar situations. We stayed at the GC back in October and a room that was right beside the new Ariel's Grotto attraction that is under construction. Well the first three nights starting at around 12:30 in the morning the jack hammers would start. We tried to make the best of the situation and just put the pillows over our heads and bear it as best we could. The second night we had to say something and called the front desk and they said we could come down and get some ear plugs and they were sorry for the inconvienence. The third night we couldn't take it anymore. Was transferred around and around and got through to a 'supervisor' who basically said that they had to do the work sometime and it is better to inconvienence a few than the many. My husband said it is unless your part of the few. So after all of that, the solution to our problem remained to wear the earplugs (which blocked most of the noise but it was still loud enough to wake you from a deep sleep). Didn't damper our view of Disney per se but definitely made it one of our worse trips ever.
