Disneyland getting healthier

I went to DL on Saturday and stopped by the Blue Ribbon Bakery on Main Street. My girlfriend wanted a Really Big Cinnamon Roll, and I wanted to get a strawberry shortcake. Got in line and I didn't see the strawberry shortcake behind the glass, so I figured maybe they didn't put them out yet. When it was our turn, I asked about it, and the CM told us that they don't have it anymore, and its last day was the previous Wednesday.

The CM said that Disneyland was trying to be more healthy, so they decided to get rid of it. She also said that the manager of Blue Ribbon Bakery decided to get rid of the 5-layer cake. What puzzled us was that they still serve cheesecake. I'm not health expert, but that doesn't seem less healthy compared to the shortcake. The CM even pointed out that they used fresh strawberries for the shortcake.

Anyway, I decided to head over to City Hall to file a (for lack of better term) complaint. The CM over there gave me a slip with an address to write to. I understand that DL wants to get healthier, but I don't understand this move. I'm sure most of the people that purchase stuff at DL are adults, and adults can decide for themselves what they should or shouldn't eat. Bah, I'm probably just bitter because I was really looking forward to getting that strawberry shortcake, but I think I'm actually going to write them a letter.

On a lighter note, the Really Big Cinnamon Roll was delicious. ;)

Looking at the state of our nation, I don't think they can. :goodvibes

I like the idea of healthier meals. They are limiting their selection of sweets. Here is a quote from the press release.

Disney will continue to license special-occasion sweets such as birthday cakes and seasonal candy as part of its product range but will limit the number of indulgence items in its licensed portfolio to 15 percent by 2010. In addition, most special-occasion sweets will be available in single-serving packets.

My problem with this is that when I go to Disneyland/world I usually splurge on the treats. I don't mind them offering healthy options for the people who want them but I should be able to choose to go off the diet for a few days if I want to.

Seems silly to me! They keep the big cin. bun but lose the strawberries??? HUH???

I think they may need a new nutritionist!

Hmmm... I wonder if they are getting rid of items that contain trans fats. That idea is fantastic to me, sorry to those of you who don't agree. Perhaps they will replace the cakes that they've discontinued serving with others that have better ingredients??? Time will tell. I do have to say that I just recently saw a picture of the strawberry shortcake and I was planning on trying it on my next trip!!!

They did have apples, and carrots at the Halloween Treat stations as well. We asked for some apples for something to snack on other than candy, but I couldn't imagine coming home with a bag full of apples and carrots.

(One mom actually freaked out that they didn't have apples or carrots at one of the stations towards the end of the night..... she held up the line a bunch too. :confused3

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind that they offer healthier things. It's about time they did, but as was already mentioned, a lot of people are on vacation, and want to splurge, and are expecting to.

MAJOR BUMMER! :(

I LOVE the DL strawberry shortcake. That is so dumb. As my hubby just said, "We don't go to DL to be healthy!!!" I DO understand some people don't want the unhealthy stuff, but, nobody is forcing you to buy strawberry shortcake (or certainly not me!!!). I am happy to know the cinnamon rolls are still there, what about the sticky buns? Can anyone confirm if they are still there? That is a part of the fun of the end of the day to us. We stop at Blue Ribbon and get our treat of choice and eat it late at night, at the hotel.

I am all for healthier options, but, don't believe removing the other things is going to do the trick. I'd say that they are shooting themselves in the foot.

That's crazy! I say offer healthier choices, but keep the other stuff, too! Vacation time is all about splurging. It's not like I eat that horribly all the time. (I don't eat great, but not THAT bad)

Sorry to hear you never got what you wanted. Its a bummer when that happens. Although it makes no sense as to why they got rid of short cake and kept cheesecake sounds like a joke.

But I like the fact that they are trying to make healthier choices. I just think they should keep the things people enjoy and use "FRESH" things on top as an alternative, insted of taking away things that people enjoy, as that way they are sure to not lose business.

I knew I saw a thread about this before.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problems at all with them offering healthy choices. I just don't get why they don't offer the healthy choices in ADDITION to the original favorites, like many of you have already stated. I wonder if they've gotten rid of anything at the ice cream shop or the candy store.

We were there last week and I thought it was great that they had apples and cranberries as part of the trick or treating. The kids meals came with carrots. One complaint though is--if they are looking into healthier meals why not offer just a sandwich for lunches. Everything came with fries. I have never eaten so many fries in my life :guilty: And don't say "well you don't have to eat them" because if they are there, I will eat them :smooth:

The sandwiches at Tomorrowland Terrace come with cole slaw. :)

While I support offering more healthy options to guests, I am opposed to Disney cutting back the number of sweets offered. High calorie meals and treats are part of the vacation experience for many of us and I am really beginning to resent the food police.

I had a root beer float each day of my recent eight day trip to WDW. Does that make me a bad person?

I still register my support of Disney getting in touch with it's social responsibilty :) .
Go Disney Go!

I love that they're trying to get healthier. And I love that I can tell which places are good for vegetarians. It's not easy being a vegetarian at DL, especially for the kids. PBJ and mac n cheese are the only choices. Not much variety when you're there for several days!

However, I think they need to offer the healthy stuff in addition to the not so healthy stuff.

I think a lot of people dont even know what healthy food is.
Sandwiches are great BUT if it's on white bread (Refined flower and high fructose corn syrup) with a ton of mayo and 3 kinds of cheese then grilled,or breaded, be real.
Or Mac and cheese. What do you think that is made of! Not low fat or whole grain.
I for one eat (and FORCE the kids too :furious: ) rather healthy at home. Not all the time but 95 % of it.(holidays are a killer)
But when I go to Disneyland I want to eat food I can only eat there!
Are they going to get rid of all of the things they think are NOT HEALTHY!?
Did they just make the cheese cake with low fat cream cheese?
When I go in the spring I hope they still haave something good(bad) left!
And if they do THATS STRAIGHT WHERE I'M HEADED  .

I think to be socially responsible all they need to do is OFFER healthier choices. Not force them on everyone. It would be great if there were options because I sure do get sick of fries by about the second day...and I'd like a few vegetables now and then. :) But I think it's terrible to get rid of people's favorite things! Keep them and just add other choices....Hey, I even eat at McDonald's now and again because I love their Asian Salad! So keep the old, add the new is my vote! Then we'll all have what we want!
