Disney World with an Ear Infection

Hope all goes well! Keep him hydrated too!

My oldest daughter had multiple painless ear infections - her gymnastics coach would let us know when she had one - she'd be doing back handsprings at an odd angle - and he'd even be able to tell us which ear, LOL!
She also ran out of antibiotics that would work, but she finally outgrew the infections, and has been infection free for 4 years now (she's 16, BTW)

Younger daughter is one of those people wired backwards for Benadryl as well. Makes her angry and mean! Coffee and sugar make her tired :confused3 I guess I should have given her coffee when she had the chicken pox at age 3? Giving her Benadryl was a last resort. I'd rather deal with an itchy kid than a psycho-mean kid. I even have it listed on her health form at school - no benadryl unless an emergency.

This could totally be my thread!! DS18months has a history of Ear Infections! We left for Florida Tuesday (at my inlaws now) and I had called last wek to make a "just n case" appointmnet for him on Monday before left - we go to WDW next. He was fine over the weekend, so I cancelled out appt. But now ever time his hand gets NEAR his ear, "I think OMG, does he have an ear infection" "Did he just touch his ear?" "what are we going to do" "I wonder if our doc can call in a prescription donw here??" "should we keep him out of the pool"? "Does he feel warm to you?" MIL must think I am crazy and a hypocondriact.... But i dont want the "best part" of our vacation tainted byan ear infection! we leave here Tuesday for a week at WDW!! :p I know what you mean about the upset belly - the amoxocilin usualy cleans DSs belly right out -all bacteria is gone - good and bad. Be sure to put the yogurt right to him! :wizard: Good luck!!

Be sure he has something to drink or suck on when you are flying. That can be so incredibly painful. I think you are actually in a good place since you have the antibiotic. Have a great trip!

We've had the winter of ear infections. Every time my son turns around, he's got another one and for some reason he doesn't tell us with words that he's in pain. Usually we know that he's having ear problems because he will start biting himself and other people. he goes from angel boy to demon child and then we know.

When we were at his pediatrician's last month for an ear ache, I asked if we could just go ahead and schedule an appointment for the week before our trip. She said that that was probably a good idea. So, today we went to see our ped. When we went inside, DH says, "Oh good, my ear hurts." I stopped and looked at him. I asked him if this was the truth or a story and he told me it was a story. UGH!:confused3

So we get inside and we wait...and wait...and wait. Finally she can see us. She looks in the first ear and says it looks good. Looks in the other and says something to the fact that it is a big yucky white milky mess. She asked if he had been out of control and then I remembered that he bit his father last night. :scared1: She said that if we would have waited a few more days, he would have been running a fever and we probably would have ended up in an emergency room somewhere in Orlando. DSo we left with some antibiotics (that I'm hoping don't upset his stomach) and the number to the ENT.

In the meantime, we leave for WDW on Saturday :scared: Hopefully by then the ear thing will be a little better. In the meantime, does anyone know any home remedies to at least take away some of the pain that my Superman 3 year old won't admit to having?

I suffered through one ear infection 4 years ago and remember it to be the most painful thing I have ever experienced. I cannot describe a similar pain; it was a sustained long-term pain until I was finally prescribed tylenol 3's.

Unless you've had an ear infection, it's very hard to relate to kids and their behaviours with this type of pain. Biting is obviously a sign that your ds is suffering.

When you are aware of ear infections with your kids, please give them proper pain medication, because the crying is due to the extreme pain they experience.

Signed, mom who suffered through an ear infection as an adult and is speaking for all those babies/toddlers who can't tell mom how much it hurts when ear is infected.

I can vouch for this, too. I just had an ear infection in February and it was excruciating. I was going crazy with the pain. They gave me heavy duty painkillers and I took tons of Advil until the antibiotics started to kick in. I had forgotten how horrible ear infections feel until I was walloped with this one. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, let alone a poor child!

I have also had my fair share of ear infections and I knwo that it is some of the worst pain that I've ever had. That's why I'm so surprised when he doesn't come right out and say, "Mom, my ear hurts!" Sadly, it usually takes two fits before I decide that it's something more serious than just being tired. My pediatrician was amazed when his ear drum popped and we had no idea that he was even in pain because he was running, playing and laughing. Yeah, I sure feel like I lost the Mother of the Year Award when things like that happen.

That's whenever we travel we have pain killers and ear drops close by.

my daughter used to get them every month like clock work. After over a year I finally decided it was time to get tubes for her ears. They were very effective and didnt have any since they were put in. 10 years later and hasnt had one ear infection

My Lydia use to have ear infections CONSTANTLY from the time she was about 6 months old until we FINALLY got the tubes put in at about 18 months. I didn't want the tubes put in, but I am SO glad we finally did it! Nothing worked on her and the antibiotics were really losing their effectiveness. I feel bad that she was in that much pain for so long. Once she had the tubes put in, she was a different child. She is 5 now, and has had one maybe two infections since then. If I were you, I would really look into the tubes when you get back. I konw how awful it is when your little one is hurting. I hope you have a great trip.

And, my sister use to go crazy after having Bendadryl too! She went NUTS!!! HYPER HYPER HYPER!!! :hyper: :hyper:
